Can't help but see a bias here...

Modern games get absolutely trashed should they not be long enough, lack a cohesive story, don't have multiple modes, and have poor graphics.  Yet all of these things seem to go out the window when there's a guy reviewing an old school game who's old enough to remember going to arcades.

I'm aware that all reviews are just opinions, but when those opinions contradict each other simply due to the nature of the genre, then there's a problem.

@tacohashi  I understand your concern, and i also do not appreciate biased or contradicting views; but these shm'ups should be short and too much of a story would feel forced.  Also these shm'ups generally have multiple modes of play and I find the graphics, while not ground breaking, to be very pleasing.  I think you need to shift perspectives to properly review a game like this.  To compare this to what is more popular today would be unfair.  The reviewer must change his frame of reference, and this can be easily mistaken as a bias because in many ways, it is.  The only difference is, I feel, it is a fair and necessary bias, which I realize sounds contradictory. It is all relative to the frame of reference; that is my main point.

ah yes, finally a historically accurate realistic WWII era side scrolling shooter!

I wouldn't pay full price for an arcade port that can be finished in one hour. if it was 400 points maybe. but, $40? that's an unreasonable price.

Eh, these kind of games are pretty much dead at this point when you got so many new, advanced games out there. And I definitely was part of the generation where NES was popular, coming to its end and starting off with Genesis, but now when you look at today's games, these kind of games just can't compare. Just my opinion. But if I wanna get nostalgic, I'll play some classics from old consoles.

@NeoSA2012 Too much flashy shooting everywhere. They should really add some tacticalness to this. Buy weapons, shields, upgrades you name it. Side scrolling can be fun, but they should make it on a larger universe scale. I'm basically saying they need to revamp there thinking on sidescrollers. I have a few ideas myself, but you know eh...

@x2rufff4u @NeoSA2012 Yeah, that would cool. They were trying to stick to a classic feel, because I'm sure you remember there was a ton of games that were this style. One that I remember playing for Sega Saturn that was like this, but it was in a 3D environment was Panzer Dragoon Zwei. That was a really fun game. You take this game and put it in a cool 3rd person, 3D environment and add the stuff you were talking about, I bet it would be a lot better. Good comment.

Im thinking its because its just plain fun. And the graphics may cause a lot of nostalgia from the golden age of gaming from the NES, Genesis, and SNES era. Now those were the days!

Dafuq? They name their game "Red Katana" and then it's an arcade/retro shooter?

Sure, makes perfect sense... NOT

8.0 for this? I think Gamespot is just going gaga for retro games... I really hoped it was some new anime hit game with blood, gore, high flying ninjas and all that... If I wanted games like this, I might as well dig up my Gameboy Color from its grave... lollllz!

I've played games like this in the past and really enjoyed myself, but this gameplay just doesn't look like it'll do it for me. Yay for video reviews.

40 dollars for an old-school style shooter that's barely an hour on its first play through?  This should definitely have been an arcade game...

The name and box art had me thinking of a JRPG or slash 'em up tbh.

@Dark_Metamorphosis  what does that even mean?

Dark_Metamorphosis
Dark_Metamorphosis

@oniyusuf That people who play these kinds of very Japanese games tend to own a Playstation system more than an Xbox system. Perhaps that has changed but I doubt it. And what about Japan? I'm sure there's a PS3 version of this game in Japan. Microsoft is probably getting these games as exclusives because they're trying to win that audience over. I bet there was a deal here. And I'm no system fanboy btw, I couldn't care less, I'm just surprised this isn't on PS3. Seems like a more natural fit.

Actually, niche Japanese games are more common on the Xbox 360 than they are on the PS3.

The PS3 usually gets the more mainstream Japanese games, whereas the Xbox 360 gets the more niche Japanese games. That's why a lot of Japanese 'otaku' actually prefer the Xbox 360 over the PS3.

Dark_Metamorphosis
Dark_Metamorphosis

I don't understand why there is no PS3 version. This would be much more at home on that platform. I think people who are into these games are much more likely to own a PS3 than a 360.
