Its a matter of trial and error. I am still waiting for two and i have been doing it for a year

Redd sells paintings on the day he comes. Theres no point to having coffee its just something to do

Yes, you but them from Redd. But, When he is telling you the price, if there is a bubble or an"air quote" that means it's fake.

That's false; there is absolutely no way to tell whether a painting is real or a counterfeit before buying it, except in the European version while playing with certain languages, apparently.
Note that a few of the paintings are actually spotlight items, which are either bought from Tom Nook or received from Wishy after making a wish when there's a shooting star in the sky during the night.
