That's the thing. BC2 still has their servers running last I checked. I don't know how many, but if they can run servers for that... No, scratch that, I think I played Battlefield 2: Modern Combat last year before BF3 came out and that was still up with like 70 players online total. Seriously, EA could have official servers for the game if they wanted to. I just really wish they had made more servers for the rentals instead of cutting the official ones down to nothing.

Yes BC2 servers are still up on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Also the private servers are still available. I've been playing a ton of BC2 and the rooms have seriously been packed for the last month. Looks like gamers havee returned to the last decent BF title. Sad thing is EA has the fanboys in the palm of their hands at this point. Battle Log is a mess.

No, PS3 just gets outright shafted (although when I think fps I don't think PS3). I agree with you about XBL. I used to have it right at the get-go with MechAssault for the Xbox. Was a blast, but I switched to PC gaming after the 360 came out because it suited me better. I mess with computers as a hobby, and there is the unbridled (and free) internet and all the good and bad things that come out of it available (such as dedicated servers anyone can host). Also, Steam.

Yeah I have a pretty powerful PC as well. I've been thinking about switching to PC gaming for sometime now. I mean nothing but PC gaming. I give you a few specs on it. i7-960 OC'd @ currently 4Ghz on all 8 logical cores [highest OC is 4.5Ghz, but I don't need all of that power now]. Water cooled CPU, 12GBs of RAM [triple channel memory + XMP compatible and OC'd] GTX 550 Ti FPB and a GTX 560 Ti, 700W PSU, and so on.

So yeah I have a pretty powerful PC that almost never goes above 20%. As for console gaming EA is slowly ruining that along with other developers. There is a little game named Dust 514 that will be released for free on the PS3 that will allow a ton of people to play online in a MMO. I think up to and more than 64 players. EVE tried to reach out to MS, but MS heard the word "free" and was like f*** that. CCP wasn't going to work with MS because MS wanted to incorporate their "Must have Xbox Live GOLD" in order to play slogan. So that's one reason I don't like MS. They never do anything or give anything to the gamers. Also free XBL on certain weekends doesn't count. That's just a marketing tool.

"The community requested [a rental program] and we delivered.”

That is why they should never listen to the community.

    Taken from my earlier post:

Q: Why are there no official DICE servers anymore? Now all that is around are the rented servers.

A: There is only so much physical space and digital space where you can have servers. The community requested an RSP programme and we delivered.

That's a bold face lie. The community wanted to know when we would get private servers, not pay for them and lose the official servers. Show me the topics were people were begging to pay for servers on consoles. We just wanted to know where they were. Also people slowly started to figure out that EA would charge us for them.

Also forget competitive esport.....The guy couldn't even give a straight answer....oh wait he did BF3 isn't competitive is what I basically got from the AMA conversation.

I've been complaining about this utter bull**** for about a week now, and I'm glad to see that other people are finally getting on board. I've already dumped a good amount of money in to this game, and I'm not really going to stop playing any time soon. I'd rather deal with getting kicked for arbitrary reasons (such as kicking a little too much ass), than just putting the game on the shelf. I still enjoy the gameplay.

That said, they've lost me for a future purchase. My $60 is only a splash in the bucket, and I get that, but they're not getting it from me. I already abandoned CoD for its inability to change formula a la Madden. On to the next shooter, I suppose.

I seriously thought that this must be a troll topic...

I guess it is, just that EA's doing the trolling.

I wasn't being facetious when I said I might sell this game. I'm seriously considering it now, harder than I have any other game in the last 15 years. I'd rather get a little bit of money back and write off the rest than even tolerate another minute of this crap.

Funny thing is, I'd come back after about a month away, and almost in spite of the issues with suppression and what not, was having a good enough time with it to actually consider biting the bullet and getting the Close Quarters DLC. Now that the truth's come out about the official servers, though, **** that. This is a level of bull**** that I refuse to stand for, and I'm a (admittedly too) tolerant son of a *****.

    Too true.

Worst part about it is we have people hosting servers with vanilla settings, a service that EA Sweden should provide for free.

And server space isn't finite for BF3, unless there's a cap on how many people can rent servers; I don't believe it for a second.

The game won't reach it's full potential until the player population has dwindled down to what BC2 is now. By that time, the patches will actually work / most of the BS will be ironed out, and the suckers / consumer slaves renting these servers will have moved on.

This should be a clue to all you DD defenders out there. Online play, along with DLC, movies, & games that you bought digitally, doesn't last forever on home gaming consoles.
  • May 10, 2012 8:34 pm GMT
I thought this was a joke...

You watch EA pull out these stunts one after the other and you think man there is no way they can top that but damn they always find a way.

With Activision and Capcom it's a tough race to the bottom of the greed barrel, every week I get further evidence that there is no future in console gaming.

I've already started moving back to PC after like 10 years of gaming on console and I gotta tell you, the Indie scene makes it all worthwhile.

Stop giving your money to EA and the other greedy ****** who can't get enough millions guys, there are small independent devs out there who actually need support for their awesome games.

So we're leaving BF3 online Multiplayer to the hands of people with too much time and money on their hands who will most likely have superiority complexes and force people to play by their 'rules' or boot them otherwise (or just boot them because they shot them).

Oh, and the guys who are paying them money so we can have vanilla BF3. I truly feel sorry for those guys, having to invest money just so we can enjoy the game as we did before.

You know, EA, when you're making MW3 look like a better game in comparison, YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

I've previously posted in the topics on this board that asked "what we don't like about this game" and "what we'd like to change about this game". My list of issues in both those topics were pretty long, but I dealt w/ it because this game has so much to offer in spite of all that so I just dealt w/ everything.

THIS, however, is my breaking point. I'd already noticed the lack of official cq servers. I already decided that I wasn't getting the CQ DLC if the M26 wasn't patched by then. I was skeptical about getting it if the rent-a-server/browser didn't get updated/fixed. With neither of those happening, I see myself not bothering w/ this game at all for a good while. I already haven't been able to bring myself to turn the game on for the past couple days as it is anyway.

Maybe by the time 2013 rolls around this game might be playable again, and I'll see where the current state of the game lies around then before deciding whether to pick it back up.

I honestly never saw myself willingly going back to BC2, but I'm thinking that is a seriously possible scenario now. Guess I'll also start taking a closer look into Halo 4 and whether 343i will be able to not fumble the hand-off from Bungie.

I would just like you all to know: I work with the law firm Hagens Berman, LLC. The firm has filed class action suits against EA before over their licensing exclusivity for their Madden games, which is an ongoing case. I've spoken with my boss as well as others regarding this situation, particularly the rent-a-server update. Hopefully the attorneys can explore possible litigation and perhaps file another class-action suit against EA, if there is a case to be made. I've personally filed a complaint against EA; if that's successful I believe there will be a good chance for litigation. In the meantime, I encourage you all to file similar complaints, at least through the BBB, such that EA can more fully gage the community's opinion on their practices. If there is any interest, I'll keep you guys up to date.

Okay, this does it. I do not care if they patch the M26, but GodDAMN these bastards if they don't bring official servers back. I am boycotting EA until I see some f**king change in their dynamic. I have to pay $60 for the game, $60 for the DLC, and $65 every 90 days for the full experience? F**k you, DICE and EA. I refuse to pay $380 for one game for a single year.

Rental servers should not replace the already existing and established normal dice servers. Its one thing to add rental servers into the mix to allow players to set up and run their own style of games. Its another to remove the option to play the game the way it was meant to be played since the launch day altogether.

This wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt for the fact that the vast majority of the people running the rental servers are jerks who are eager to ban and or kick people from games, set up and run horrible ticket counts, spam the same map over and over, etc etc. The only good I can see coming from this is an increase in more people setting up rental servers to run like the normal DICE servers. The problem though is that there is no real good way to filter out the crapy servers from the ones that would mimic the normal DICE ones. Sorry but wading through pages of servers and having to view their settings isnt my idea of having fun playing a game, its more of a chore and not the experience I wanted or was present at the time when I spent my $60 to get the game. Hopefully DICE will implement better options to filter out the servers but at this point I doubt that they will.

The other thing is even if you do favorite a particular server how long will it last before the person paying decides that they would rather spend their $30 a month to run it elsewhere? At that point youre back to having to sift through servers and their settings to find one that you want to actually play on....again more of a chore then an actual game.

damn....I agree with everybody pretty much. Not much more to be said that isn't already said. That's sad when people have to pay for vanilla servers that should be there anyway.I swear I never remember hearing people begging to pay for private servers anyway...and um....why should we have to pay for private custom games anyway?Hell Halo 3 for example is for free on custom games and Halo Reach and countless other games....gettin real burned out on BF3 anyway. It was cool while it lasted but this last patch really messed it up.

I agree with the guy who said pretty much my only hope for a shooter now will be Halo 4.Maybe I was too quick to drop Halo Reach, maybe I'll go back to that *shrug* .Or hell even BC2 I wouldn't mind going back to,but it just feels SO clunky.

Well that explains it. I was playing late last night and had to adjust my filter just to get any choices of servers to play on. For Australia + Asia, I had a choice of THREE servers for Rush. 1 of them was 200% tickets, 1 had practically banned everything, and the other had 16-17 players.

By adding West USA to the filter, I doubled my options, but increased my ping.

So yeah, for Rush games, I usually only have 3-6 choices if I want to play in a server with 15 or more players in it. You'd think the game was 3-4 years old and nearly dead looking at the server options.

Australia was bad enough with only a small amount of offical servers, but this is just pathetic.

This game is going to end up on my shelf soon I reckon. What would be the point of buying the DLCs if you don't have servers in your region to play on? It would be like the COD lag-fest all over again.

Oh, and I've been reading this forum since the beta came out, and the BC2 forum since the BC2 demo.. Never ONCE did I read a thread where GameFAQS users asked for RENTAL servers.

Bad Company 3 is what happens. BF3 is just the start of the exploits. Online code + pay to play\host + DLC + bugs glitches + updates. I don't like the way DICE \ EA is handling BF3. Now I see why all of the devs call EA the worst developers and why EA is the worst company in articles. I mean damn Activision isn't this bad and dedicated servers was an advantage. Especially for competitive gamers.

NO ONE ever asked for that on the official board either. It' just a damn lie EA is using. Lying on the consumers doesn't sit well in my book. They basically took a system from PC, incorporated it and overcharged for it. Buying servers on the PC is cheap nowadays and we never had to pay EA for PC servers. EA has simply became greedy. Even by cutting out the middle. Other than Microsoft they are getting pretty much all of the profit. EA shares with no one lol. Sad smh.
