How do you play brink with a gamepad such as a xbox 360 controller?

Here is a very detailed description of how to do this posted by a splash damage on steam. While it is an unofficial fix, it does apparently work. Note however that brink does not officially support gamepads, and probably won't as it is mainly an online game.
