@headsetter: you don't have to master every moves.
Take a look at other beat'em all, especially Ninja Gaiden 2... You have something like 40 different combos per weapon...

I agree that's I don't master every moves at chapter 3, but it's good to see them. When I mastered the first moves, I will move forward to the other. I think I can use 60% of his arsenal.

    Good replay value there.

Yes, I do resort to using correct grammar (NOT "grammer" because it's hard to have a good debate with someone who isn't intelligent enough to type correctly.

I really don't understand the hate at all. You have 46 levels each one different with astounding detailed graphics and an actual interesting story that leaves things open for even more interesting stuff to come out in the future. I dunno guys maybe I'm crazy, but this a really good game.

Doom 2 is my all time favorite shooter. The genre went downhill from there. I'm certainly not a fan of all those cookie cutter shooters they release year after year.

"I completely agree with you. This game was supposed to be Castlevania's entry into the next-gen era. It had the potential to be AWESOME to new players and long-time fans, but instead it fell flat. Those who say otherwise never really "got" CV in the first place, methinks."

Wow...... this place is starting to get really pretentious. Whats there to get its a game where you go in a castle you fight monster you defeat Dracula whats there to get? And here comes a game that tries something different and you quickly turn it down. Honestly the original CV series was basically done, lets face it they weren't going to do the Battle of 99 game and they will probably never give a clear explanation to why the Morris' have the Vampire Killer. If they did anything more it would have probably be retconned again or it would be another BS game like Order of Ecclesia ( I hate that game with a passion BTW).

It's not pretentiousness . It's a yearning for something that resembles a Castlevania game, not a generic God Of War clone with the Castlevania name lazily slapped on it.
  • Nov 22, 2010 6:31 pm GMT

This is the beginning of a new Castlevania and my personal GOTY for 2010. Maybe its forgettable for you, but I really don't care about what you think about the game.

Are you kidding me TC, as some one who kinda liked the other CV titles, this one is by far my favorite, not to mention it's prob one of my most favorite games in general, do you not look around in this game, taking in it's gorgeous views, everything in this game I feel is just soo damn well done. I can't help but read everything relating to the lore that they bring up in this game because it's so damn awesome.

If they make a sequel for this game, then it will be memorable.

The first Devil May Cry wasn't memorable. Its when the third come out that the series become one of the favorite franchise.

DMC1 was amazing. It's why I got a PS2. It was very memorable, it just wasn't widely advertised or talked about, but it was reviewed very well. The sequel almost tanked the franchise though, but the third game (luckily) restored faith. Too bad the 4th one pretty much sucked.

Legacy of Kain become memorable when Soul Reaver come out.

This is true. Few people played Blood Omen, but it was a decent game in its own right, even if it was behind the times.

So far, only the first in the franchise that established it as great is God of War, Ninja Gaiden....I don't remember others.

God of War and Ninja Gaiden underwhelmed me at first, but they grew on me. I feel God of War 2 was a superior game to the first, just as Ninja Gaiden Black (not 2) was miles better than the original. NG2 had amazing weapons but the game itself was disappointing (read: broken).

When Darksiders 2 come out, its might become a great franchise also.

Maybe. I liked Darksiders, but it wasn't perfect. Good setting and overall gameplay, but I dunno, something felt off about it.

There's no disputing that Konami blew it big time.

475,000 units so far, give or take. That's pretty much genre norm, barring blockbuster titles.

I asked someone at Gamestop how it was selling. He laughed and told me after the first few days, no one even picked up the box to look at it, let alone actually buy it.

I'm not going to say this didn't happen, as it's obviously within the realm of possibility, but it sounds fabricated. Particularly the laughing part. Employees who care about their jobs would likely have spun even low sales another way rather than actively discouraging you from buying something.

    monsterlunchbox | Posted 10/25/2010 2:55:53 PM
I called a few other Gamestops, they basically gave me the same answer.

No you didn't. Rational human beings don't do that. You've got such an axe to grind that you called up other stores on a lark to see if you'd get evidence to support your claim? No. By the way, I work for GameStop. We are all but contractually obligated to NEVER divulge a game's sales numbers, even by way of guesstimating. To do so in person is one thing, where the boss won't overhear. To do so on the phone would be pretty damning, particularly since turnover is so high around the holidays.

So what you're trying to be is a troll. You start a pretty inflammatory, baseless topic on a board dedicated to specific discussion. You get a lot of replies. Congrats, you are spending time trying to artificially inflate your power level on a message board. I have plenty of problems with Lords of Shadow, but calling it cheap, a cash-in, or effortless made me have a tiny brain aneurysm, and my eyelids fluttered between closed and half-closed for nearly ten whole seconds.

You have possibly damaged my mental faculties with how obscenely stupid this thread is. The only good thing to come of this: I wasted enough time shaking my head and sighing (and writing this post!) that my next class starts soon, which works out because I was getting really tired of reading about LeBron alienating another coach.

I love how people call me a troll because I don't love and worship every Castlevania game that is released. I'm not the sort of person that buys into all the hype, I have my own opinions and I don't mind telling it how it is. 475,000 units really isn't that many nowadays. I would be surprised if that was enough units sold to break even.

As for my conversations with Gamestop employees, I know them and they know me. They give me the straight story. If a game isn't selling, they'll tell me. I'm friends with the managers too, so I know they're not going to fire an employee because he gave me an honest answer that the game wasn't selling well. I don't know what sort of draconian store you work for, but the Gamestops I go to encourage the employees to be friendly and honest with the customers.

I think they call you a troll because you care to post on a forum about a game you don't like.
I think they assume that in your case, they would spend a better time doing something they like.
But no, you prefer to post a negative comment instead of playing another game you enjoy.
Some would say... get a life.

I'm a fan of the series, and this is the latest installment in that series. That's why I'm having an intelligent discussion here.If you read my other posts, I explained how I hope that they use this game as a learning experience to make the next one better. That's constructive criticism. I know they have it in them to make a better game, they just need to refocus, start from the ground up, tighten the controls, and keep on polishing it up til its superb. I love the Castlevania series and I really want the next one to be outstanding. I'm trying to be as positive as possible, but it's really hard when they output stuff like this. I think the only fans that have it harder are the Sonic fans.

    *stuff about trolling and sales.*

Not sure if you're still trolling, but I've got a little time to kill again and hey, here we are. First of all, nobody cares about your specific opinion. It's fine that you don't like Lords of Shadow. I could probably agree with some of the criticisms you have about it. Ultimately, the reason people call you a troll is because you posted an inflammatory opinion in an inflammatory way on a discussion board based around that which you are calling subpar. And 475,000 is genre norm in the States, barring mega-titles like God of War and Devil May Cry. Even DMC4 only broke I think 2.3 million in total sales, and it's been out for years and has (had?) much more brand recognition than Castlevania does. Ninja Gaiden 2 actually had worse sales than Castlevania has had thus far - I think at this point NG2 was at like 380k? So in point of fact you're totally wrong, here. Sorry.

*stuff about being friends with gamestop crew.*

That's cool. I'm friends with a huge number of the people who come into the GameStop where I work. If they want honest answers, I tend to give them. I'm still not allowed to do things like break street date, divulge sales numbers, or tell them how many of <insert product here> we'll have on <insert date here>. Managers want to push numbers, and employees want to sell things because that's how they get hours allocated to them. If your numbers are poor, you get fewer hours. As such, it's in my best interest to never call attention to game as bad or underselling, because that discourages sales and frankly I want to make money. I might recommend a different game if I feel like something really sucks, but the last time we had an employee out-and-out bash a game and offer no alternative, he stuck around for maybe a week and a half after that.

    *stuff about draconian rules.*

Again, the difference here is that you can be friendly and honest without discouraging sales. One, I still don't believe your insane story. It makes no sense for you to go around to various stores and inquire about sales numbers, be friends with everybody involved, and get direct answers to the tune of "Nope, that game sucks, it's not selling at all." That is obviously a lie. Two, if I - as a gamer - have a crisis of conscience, where somebody is buying something I think really sucks (for instance, you come up with copies of Too Human and Two Worlds), I will just recommend them other stuff. Hey, man, try Fable instead if that's your cup of tea. Maybe one of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games is more your speed, with co-op and all. If somebody asks questions about sales numbers, be vague unless it's common knowledge. Besides, your small store and geographic area don't account for a good sample size. If somebody asks if a game sucks, be vague. Talk about stuff you like and what you think is good, don't discourage people from buying stuff. Unless you absolutely have to.

It's a business, man. I live in the city. GameStop isn't, like, let's-all-pal-around-and-talk-video-games land. It's my job, it's how I make money. If somebody like you showed up and asked me if Castlevania was selling or not, I'd say "Yeah, among fans of action platformers and stuff. It's kind of a niche title. Did you play the old Castlevanias?" Or we'd talk about DMC or related ****. Laughing and saying "LOL NOBODY'S PICKED IT UP IN WEEKS HUEHUEHUEHUEHUEHUEHUEH" is just facepalm worthy.
