Do you remember when you had to look up video game cheat codes in a magazine to even stand a chance of beating a game? Whatever happened to that? Why do modern games make you earn your cheats? Gareth Robinson ponders.
this made me remember the days of Gameshark, Motherlode on sims, and GTA3 Cheat codes lml
i wish games still had cheats the new ones rarely have any cheats, the cheats in gta sa were awesome.not saying that i dont want to complete the game the hard way but its fun to cheat now and then
"Prince of Persia" for MS-DOS was the first game I used cheats, not because it was hard, but because you were rediculously overpowered, une button kill, one button resurrection, one button fall slowly in the pits... those were the days :D
One of the things I do think the developers do well today is to reward the good players, giving them achievements, trophies, Xbox points and special items. It really makes you want to do the best and pass the game properly. Honestly I do think it's good that.
But we all forget than in the old days we all used cheat codes or trainers to pass difficult games like doom.
Today I do like it better when you have to complete the game properly but the player should be allowed to use cheats for those games you have getting dust that you would never play them again unless you can use god mode or something similar.
Funny you should do this article. Recently the Big 'N' released the GB Classic, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 at the eShop for the 3DS. The reason I remember this game was not for the gameplay, but the cheat which came with it due to the game being released w/o the debug modes taken out. The one where you pause the game and tap SELECT 16 Times until you see a square. If you press and hold B you could manipulate your lives, coins, hearts and even the Timer. By pressing and holding A and B after the cheat, you could highlight the Wario Icon and activate one of his Super Hats accordingly.
Usually I recall the cheats normally turned out to be debugging codes for games which either the programmers forgot to take out, or simply kept them in and called them 'Easter Eggs."
Recently I had to use a Trainer for the pc version of Dead Island... Why you may ask: BECAUSE THEIR TERRIBLE BUGS AND GLITCHES!!!!
How is possible that all the items in your inventory just disappear!!! yes, that happens in all version of Dead Island, even with the GOTY edition...
i want cheats back in video games, and not because i suck, i always complete a game legitly the first time, and the second time around i would like to just use some cheats and have some fun
If you're using the microphone on your camera, then you definitely need to buy a microphone that you hook onto your clothes, because the microphones that come with cameras record really bad audio.
THE GOOD OLD CHEATS
no matter wether if remained from developers and their q.a.,
or put in as easter-egg.
... or just a glitch the player can use.
THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE MANY LITTLE THINGS THAT MADE GAMES UNIQUE, GAVE EM SOUL AND CHARACTER.
imo.: on console-gaming you have to go (almost solely) indie to get that feeling back.
too many 3d-gameplay titles don't transport that feelings
OF A GOOD GAME THAT MAKE YOU WANNA DISCOVER ANY PIXEL!
AND IF YOU BEAT IT 10 TIMES YOU START TO USE THE CHEATS FOR FUN AND TO DISCOVER EVERYTHING :)
Achievements and trophies, online play and leaderboards, all these things have contributed to cheating becoming something frowned upon and even sometimes punished by game companies.
I cheated excessively playing games in my youth, and while my friends who did also found more enjoyment in god modes, cheating ruined the experience for me.
I was addicted to cheating, if I knew how I would, but it always made the game feel more hollow.
One reason I bought Skyrim for PS3 rather than PC was because I knew how very tempting that command console would be.
@TrueProphecy22 I bet you regret that decision! The PS3 version is so buggy. I bought it on PS3 rather than XBOX to get away from achievements, which I think are ruining games. I've never been a completer but now I feel you have to because I get some ridiculous badge for it... I'm waiting for the achievement backlash.I wonder if the generation who are old enough to remember when you needed cheat codes ever go back to play those games again now. I used to find Castle and World of Illusion impossible when I was little, but I played them again recently and I finished each one in about 2 hours. Maybe we're all too good at games to need cheat codes now.
What about the trend in the 90's when the producers made the move to profit off of cheats with items like the "game genie" and ALL the guides started being released.
The internet reduced the need for so many of the guides, because often while I did not cheat, I still wanted to see everything the game had to offer, buying the guides for many of my JRPG favs.
Who remembrs typing ABACABB to turn on blood in Mortal Kombat, or typing in wigan rlfc in the hscores on Gouls and Ghosts :) good times
I still play a lot of my old games some from back to 1995, then u had to look for a cheat, but i never even knew about cheats till 2003, some games were really hard but fun. I did like cheats when they came out just to boost me to a new level, but still enjoyed trying to beat the game without, very challenging those old games, i'm only 54, and still have 54 more yrs to finnish some of these tough ones, have fun everyone, one cheat at a time!
Now instead of typing in a cheat in a console, people download trainers or complete save games ;)
Goldeneye 64 with cheats wow thats brings back memories It made the game so much more fun to muck around on. Another good thing was beating levels under a certain time to unlock cheats
I miss having the option to cheat because if you wanted to play the game fair by the rules you could and if you needed help geting passed a level you could you use a cheat which would keep you playing and having fun. Know your forced to be fustrated figuring out how to win or look it up on youtube and spoil more parts of the game
Cheats :) Old times old times... wait... i'm not even that old haha
When i was a kid i dun even cheat.... i just use items i gathered for the final boss :)
Maybe only GTA SA i cheated... becuz running half an hour would be boring to get to the other side, just spawn a plane and go
last time i used cheat codes wassssssssssssss yap in pursuit force on psp i think so but its crapy
the games of that era were really tough and this was cause of the arcade machines, your money their pockets, understand? so the cheats were essentially created by developers for their use and as a redemption token so people might just play through the entire game
I kinda wish that there were cheats(infinite ammo and invincibility) for playing a solo game of MW3 survival mode and Black Ops combat training. Just for fun of course.
I lol'd at the Commander Keen picture. It's been a long time since that game.
Anyway cheating in games has gone away because games have become easier.
@csward not really, there are still noobs all over.... in Multiplayer :) a few of them are so bad that they have to pick up hacks
Personally I still wished we had cheat codes. Of course not for multiplayer or online but, I used to have my achieve game where I didn't use cheats and put in the work, then I had a cheat game for when I just wanted to go all out and see what I could do. Those cheat games were fantastic when playing co-op with a friend, the world was at our mercy. I still have my white binder full of cheat codes for FF VII, Ah the Sephiroth in my party code. Also could never forget FF XI when I used the code to activate all magic and abilities, that was some serious cake! 8)
Growing up I always used cheat codes to get by when playing video games because I hated losing. But now I could care less about them because they make games boring and I love being challenged. I'm so over cheat codes!!!
If I would go back to my High School notebooks, I´d probably find most of the last pages filled up with scribbles on cheat codes, or specific stats to get a given result in a game... Good 'ol times!!
I remember having an archive with all the cheats I was able to get from videogamesmagazines and tv shows. I miss those days...
@diogofonseca Same here, I still have one folder with all those txt and docs. Surprisingly I don't add anything anymore
I just remembered, Medal of Honor Underground, where there was a cheat that made the enemies turn on each other, it was very funny. The zombies in Saints Row The Third is also great. That's the kind of cheats I like for a second playthrough, just for fun, but I never use cheats to actually beat a game.
It's been so long since I last cheated a game that I almost forgot about those features in the old days.
Well, back in the NES era, I had a hard time with Ninja Gaiden 2 and Super Contra to name some, but finishing those games actually gave me a sense of accomplishment, yes, you could cheat if the difficulty was punishing but it made you a better gamer in the end. Nowadays you just have to try over and over till you succeed, so, there's no point of having cheats unless you play just for the fun of using them.
Online gaming is basically what happened to cheating. Back in the day, cheating gave you extra lives, coins, ammo, whatever it was you were playing. Your friends could benefit from it. Now that games are online, competitive, people use cheats for the advantage against other players, rather than the game itself. Cheating isn't all bad. It's like a gun. In the wrong hands, it can cause a lot of problems. Maybe not the right comparison, but it works the same way. If you got a friend that's gonna give you super mega jump boots with infinite ammo or whatever, then hey! Awesome! but if you're in Halo or Call of Duty and someone is shooting into the sky and somehow manages to headshot you every time, theeeen yeah. That's bad.
