There's two types of companies in the world: Those who know they have been hacked, and those who are in denial about it.

but Blizzard wasn't hacked during the spree of thousands of accounts being hijacked with in the same two weeks?

People claim there are Chinese gold farmers and Businessweek shows that the Chinese are the major hackers. Seems like a connection to me....

if blizz was hacked, you would be hearing about it all over the news by now. they got over 11m wow subs = alot of credit cards.

Blizzard was hacked. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be 100% hack proof. And any company that claims they are are just blatantly lying.

No one is saying they are impossible to hack (well, except idiots). What we are saying is that this Session ID hack D3 haters are going on about never happened.

Just think about it. Blizzard getting hacked and credit card fraud happening because of it...well.

How do you think the police are going to piece together everyone of them played a Blizzard game? I'm saying there is a high chance that they use these credit cards elsewhere.

The only way you would really hear about credit cards being an issue was if they only used a certain credit card for Blizzard and nothing else.

Thousands of accounts were hacked due to users being silly enough to use the same email/password on fansites as they use on B.net

It's like if I used my gamefaqs account and password on some shady forum/board website

I am not registered at any site besides gfaqs and EU D3 forum and also got hacked.
In fact, I got hacked the same day as I joined my first public game ever.
Was the last public game too! Very suspicious (or however you write that).

Blizzard's databases could be hacked, sure. There is no system that is impervious to attack if the attackers are dedicated enough. What's more important, though, is that you can be sure Blizzard has designed their system so that information such as credit card data is not stored in the same place or accessed within the system in the same way that login information is. If you break the data up and section it off into smaller pieces, you make it very complex and difficult to compromise the system as a whole. Also, since passwords are stored as hashes then even if attackers get into the database with login information, they won't be able to read anyone's passwords.Sony's big fault was storing passwords as plain text so anyone reading the database could instantly access anyone's account.

There are even more ways to be secure. You don't need to tie a username to a credit card in the same table, database, or even server. I'm sure there is an ID field in the user database that is hashed (a type of one-way scrambling) and matched to hashes in the payment information database, so that a user can be tied to a credit card for recurring payments, but via a chain of secure one-way connections and without the connections being discernible to someone who's just looking at the two database tables. This hashing can be done with separate executables to separate the hashing algorithm from the databases themselves to protect the algorithms' integrity should the database itself be compromised. Hashing can be compromised via rainbow tables, but this process can be very lengthy, prohibitively so if the algorithm is extensive enough. Breaking this system to steal account logins or credit card numbers with personal data attached would require a simultaneous breach of multiple systems for very extended periods of time.

If I can come up with ideas like this to safeguard user information, do not doubt that a multi-billion dollar corporation can, too.

Yeah they can, but from this "Cold War" hackfest it seems many haven't yet.

There are huge, glaring issues with the security mindset that pretty much all companies have today.

I'm not saying Blizzard was hacked, and I'm not saying Blizzard was not hacked, but the potential is always there.

If anyone is remotely interested in the subject, I can recommend 2 books for you, by blackhat-turned-security-consultant Kevin Mitnick, 'The Art of Deception' and 'The Art of Intrusion.'

Cheap on Amazon, cheaper on torrents if you're so inclined. The first covers how human nature is exploited to gain access to sensitive systems; social engineering. The second covers the technical aspects of various attack types in laymans terms, as well as exploring hacker mindsets and motives. There is some overlap between the two.

I'd challenge a fanboy- any fanboy, to read both of these and then swear that Blizzard is unhackable/inpenetrable. There are other works that cover social engineering and technical attacks better than these, but none that I can recommend to a layman. They're good, interesting reads to to be fair, and any technically minded people would do well to read them as well.

Worst thing about grammar police: They're cannibals. If one makes a single typo or error while 'critiquing' someone, they will be EVISCERATED by their fellows.

And any system you can design, I can blow right open by chatting up the right people, passing myself off as a new employee getting advice, swiping a badge, walking back in later and showing your cleaning crew (or even security guards) said badge, and walking out with all of your backup tapes or even hard drives to analyze at my leisure.

Human nature is the weakest link in security.

    @TC

I'm going to assume you really don't know how credit fraud works, and the laws around it, so I'll enlighten as to how people would connect the dots--police included.

Blizzard, if they have a security breach, have to inform the public if it's possible personally identifying information was released. From there, an internal(and sometimes external) investigation is launched to see the extent of the damage. From there, people generally monitor their credit/debit card activity. Once suspicious activity is seen, the authorities step in really quite heavily.

That being said, it's pretty obvious the whole hacking thing was an extension of the now-meme-worthy "Should have got an authenticator" thing. I don't doubt some were, but I'd be willing to bet the number is around half or less of the people claiming it.

There is a youtube of an interview with a hacker. They said that Blizzard's site is "sound proof" so they go after blizzard fan sites and grab pw from there and use it on blizzard's users.
