I myself plan on making a "small" business selling items in D3. I'm disabled and un-employed so crafting high level gear for every level and class of character for spare real-world income is right up my alley as a feasible thing to do. I'm really glad it's a included feature in the game.

Rob Pardo discuses Diablo III's new player economy.
Wow!!! We been waiting for ever to get our hands on this and I had it pre-ordered for three years and still waiting... When are they going to realize it will never be perfect but a great game to play and release it because it looks amazing!!! if they don't release it this year I will be canceling it.
Is this honestly such a horrible feature to warrant such an outcry? The out-of-game item trade has always existed, in many games, this is nothing new. You'll never stop people trading powerful in-game items for real world cash so why not embrace it and make it accessible and useable to all players instead of the few who bothered to go out of their way to participate in the out-of-game black market. I think the cries that this is a game breaker are horribly conservative and close-minded. It existed in Diablo 2, whether you noticed it or not, and it WILL exist in Diablo 3 even if the developers decide to leave this feature out, to believe otherwise is foolish. Whatever man, games evolve, and I salute Blizzard for being one the few developers that acknowledge this and embrace player-driven evolution - because this is exactly what this is - It's most certainly not the big bad developer forcing us the players into something we didn't ask for. Bottom line...grow up and stop bi***ing. Blizzard is one of the greatest developers of all time and this game WILL be awesome no matter how much you cry about it.
Batte.net is down. This is EXACTLY why there is a petition to give Diablo 3 an offline mode. At least you can play offline mode in starcraft 2. If bnet goes down when your playing Diablo 3, you're crap out of luck. Diablo 3 needs an offline mode. For those of you that agree here's the petition link: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/diablo-3-offline-single-player-petition.html
@ironfist66 well normally you would be right about the economy getting jacked by someone monopolising a specific item, but if someone did buy up all the wands and try to sell them for outrageous prices it would be a momentary hiccup. People can VERY easily get more thru the random loot system. The Mr. Monopoly that poured all his money into wands could try to overprice them but no one would buy his due to buyers having alternatives. Since no one can completely control supply in the gameworld, no ridiculus raise in prices could occur and sustain and break the market. The worst that could happen is for like a week the prices would go up but as soon as players refilled the market it would rebalance out and that monopoly guy would S.O.L. and out-of-dough.
you know the auction house might blow up in their face especially if the price inflation that the gamespot interviewer suggested actually happens
A petition has been started for those of you that dislike the decision to exclude the offline single player mode. Please sign if you want offline play included in the final release of the game. Blizzard has yielded to petitions before. Besides, all this would take is less than a day of simple programming/tweaking. Please spread this link around to anyone interested. We are quickly getting more and more signatures, but every signature helps. Lets makes this happen. http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/diablo-3-offline-single-player-petition.html
So, the people selling the items are the one's getting the "Real Cash", right? I wonder how much Blizzard will take for their cut? I hope it's not too much because I could see myself making a lot money playing Diablo 3 and crafting high level items.
It will result in people actually not having earned their gear, as in buying it not obtaining it as a form of achievement. That's like saying "I really deserved this win, I bought my way to first place." See my point ? Rather than people actually having earned what they have. Yes yes, it's their money that's completely my point, they will earn it the easy way by spending money (which is easy compared to getting it, even if they actually spend money to "earn" it.). It will make it easier to get items, reduce the excitement of gaining items, lots will be on the AH. So yeah the rarity as well. Oooh epic! oh wait not really epic. The whole idea of "epic" as a form of rarity is that this is a type of item that drops rarely, and not many have. Of course that wasn't the case in WoW, but stay with me here. I am not super against this system, in a way I'm excited, yeah I know, but I am seeing some things that might not be that cool about it. Maybe what I'm saying is I dislike the real-money system, as gold needs to be earned in-game still, but why when if you can spare it you'll just use dollars and get yourself that nice shiny thingy. Anyone else seeing both cons and pros about this ? In that case what do you think would be the biggest cons, and what pros ?
@sinex1983 If u read what I wrote its the constant internet connection that I dont like.(the economy is not the main issue)and I dont need the insult! AND I will complain when I believe it is justified,as it is my right!
I think it add a part of excitation to the game loot system... I mean, if you know an item worth 5$ and you just drop it on a boss it will make the gameplay different on that side I guess... On my part I think I'm gona just use the money I gain to buy other items and then make more money with them etc.. I like auction house and I'm happy they added this feature in Diablo 3 because it will add even more challenge to the game.
I don't mind the auction house, it's the real money auction house that is a bit strange...even so, I personally would never use real life money to advance myself in the game as that always seemed cheap to me...(however, I wouldn't mind selling a rare item to some poor chap who would give me real money...I know, I'm shameless....but as a poor college student, money is money!)
its been about 3 yrs since they announced Diablo III ....and still they havent come up with a release date till now...maybe the next decade or so?... will the fans want a game different from its predecessors? i dont think so. just a more challenging environment and a great story line. and a mixture of WoW? just to earn more money. whats wrong with blizzard? damn i miss those days of warcrafts and starcafts and diablo 1 being a simple, exciting pc game, not needing internet, or any other hassle to play.

To all the people mindlessly complaining about a feature that is COMPLETELY optional, get off your soap boxes. If its really enough to make you not get the game and play it than I say good. Games are always better with less ignorant people polluting the community.
Great interviewer. Honestly, people are overeacting about this. Every item that is sellable, you can obtain yourself through the same means the people who are selling it did. If you're not lazy or rich, play the game like the prequels.
@Ninbri64 I agree. It just makes it easier for people who are already going to sell on ebay. Now instead of your money going into Meg Whitman's pockets, it goes into Blizzards. Win-Win.
As far the real money auction house, its completely voluntary. They aren't making you purchase items or quests or anything. So if you don't like it, feel free to ignore it. The fact the OPTION is there shouldn't deter people from what will most likely be an amazing sequel. Personally, I've never cared to purchase items online like at eBay and all and I'm sure I won't be in the auction house, but because it's there doesn't take away any of the excitement of playing the next Diablo. I would imagine the quality control being much higher being that its online only. No hacks or duping items with a modified save file. Blizzard isn't stupid. They're one of the few game companies I have lots of respect for still. I'm sure things will work out. Yeah, its online only, but at least i'm not paying a subscription fee like WoW.
I'm very disappointed with this move. Having a cash auction house embedded right in the game will increase money-item transactions off the charts. Blizzard wasn't happy that people were making money off of their game, so they figured they wanted a piece of the pie - except now they just made the pie ten times bigger.
Blizzard WAS such a great game company. I used to be their number 1 fan. I dont like the way this greedy game is headed to. Congratulations for the interviewer. Asked the most important questions!
You know don't have to do the auction house if you don't want to. you can keep d:3 a single player experience.
@doktron and every idiot complaining about items for real money: Did you not listen to the man at all? It is a 100% player-driven economy! The COMMUNITY will determine whether or not an item is sold for Monopoly money or real money. AND IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR *AT LEAST* TEN YEARS. This is not new -- only your new brand of stupidity is new. Stop complaining.
looks like another game I wont be getting .I dont like games that require a constant internet connect because I always disconnect my internet when I am not using it like when playing single player games( which should not require an internet connection) My games run better without the internet and antivirus running.I have never had a virus on my system in 12 yrs of gaming and surfing.I also dont believe in buying virtual items unless I can use virtual money. Way to screw up a great gaming series blizzard! U GOT GREED, so I get gone! Bring on BATTLEFIELD 3 ,the only game worth playing on the PC this year, cuz its being made for the PC!
This real money for virtual items idea is horrible. They better be mad expensive like back in D2's prime when The Grandfather was $400 on D2 Items or whatever. I hope for this because what the hell is the fun in just buying nasty gear instead of working hard for good gear and feeling the sense of accomplishment that you have obtained something rare and awesome!! I hope the real money auction house crashes and burns, but if it doesn't ill earn some magic find gear cause I will NEVER buy a virtual item, then do boss runs sell my findings to sorry@ss losers who don't wanna get it for themselves and make bank.
Blizzard = S*** anymore This is the end of a long relationship. there you happy Gamespot? I censored the naughty word that people use on tv every day
Well, I was looking forward to this, not anymore...I don't want to be forced to always play online, and I hate the real money auction house idea. All I want to do is be able to buy the game and play it by myself without any of that online crap...take your achievements, stats, scoreboards...and whatever, and stick them up your @$$ Blizzard. I guess I'll be waiting for the pirates to fix this game properly before I buy it. Till then I'll be buying and playing Torchlight II.
Money influx destroying games even further i hope i can play Hardcore without 1 death reset.
Ok they say that the players will set the item worth but they also say there are 100,000 of different items. So with that how would the players even begin to start setting the minimum or maximum of any item when it comes to real world money. The gold system would still be fine and set because there is no inflation there why would you buy something so overpriced that you might find later. With real world money what standard or what reasoning would the player have of setting the price other than to get over the costs of Blizzard's Fee and if you want it in a PayPal or something even more Fees.
No offline= No buy. Simple as that. I never played Diablo online anyway. Way to alienate a whole of your fans Blizz. And the money they are not getting from me they will more than make up in the auction house. Good day sir!
Ooo I can't wait to spend my whole life savings on Diablo 3... then in 2019 think back and say... Oh yeah, what an idiot!
I can understand this but much like with anyother game out there I will never pay real money for a virtual item I just think that is dumb. Maybe thats just me but I just cant justify it.
Not sure what I found more disturbing. Virtual items for real money, or the mention of a console version. *shudder*
Hmm, micro-transactions in modern video games. Essentially, it's giving players TWO ways to trade items - in-game currency and real-world currency.
