Carolyn Petit charges up her special attack for this review of Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi.
oh and the DBZ games just keeps getting worse and worse each year =/
SHAME ON YOU, NAMCO BANDAI!
ok this is was really one of the worst dbz games made. i think they're rushing to make these games now. cause they're coming out faster than before and theres never anything to look forward to anymore if they rush it. they need to take their time making these games or else you'll get that.
They need to return to the Budokai Tenkaichi formula, that was by far the best DBZ video game series ever!
and bandai has nothing to do with it, they published it, spike is the developer, fuss at them
Raging blast 2 was pretty good, what is this compared to it, is this hero mode the only pull to this game?
This game is one of the worst dragon ball games I ever played! I don't get why bandai keep continuing the bad game versions like the tenkaichi games and Raging Blast 1 and 2(tenkaichi look alike games), and leave behind the good versions like the normal budokai's, budokai 1 is good, budokai 2 even more good, the 3 is almost a perfect dragon ball game, in my personal opinion is the best dragon ball game ever made! Burt limit is normal budokai look alike, but have less content, and also a awesome graphics! but still and beautifull game! after burst limit every dragon ball game have everything bad only the graphics are good! the only thing good abou the last games is fact in this one you can make your character, but even that is very limited! pls bandai continue burst limit!!!
To keep fans happy the next game needs a setting in options menu so we can switch between 2d and 3d and then switch between budokai or tenkaichi controls.. but if they ever fix gameplay i would like to see an all new fresh story.. so have the old stories from dbz db gt but then write a whole new great and long DB story.. Like maybe something strange crashes on planet earth and a weird force starts bringing all the dead heros and villians back to life but at the same time this force would randomly fuse dbz characters together. then some strange and powerfull creatures villians would arrive.. and goku and everyone would have to defeat the villians while trying to find out how to stop the random fusions in the galaxy.. it would be great to because villians could end up randomly fusing with heros or other funny combinations.. like piccollo and Mr Popo OR vegeta and krillin... or fat buu could fuse with tien .. it would be a great storyline with tons of crazy and funny fan fusions
I hate when people gather each little piece of dirt from each and everygame then they rate it bad just because they don't like dragon ball z or naruto
best game still budokai 3, tenkaichi games sucks, or games similiar like rising blast...
Nappa: Vegeta what does the scouter say about the reviews power level??? Vegeta: ITS UNDER 9000!!!!!!!! (sigh) I miss Budokai 3
Let's get this straight. DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is by far the best dragonball z game. Would it have been so hard to just make that game with these graphics and overall more cinematic? Once that DBZ game comes out, I'll be set for life.
@dan_sundberg ``I hate how they crush a lot of games and many more games don't get a review at all... like Sonic Generations`` I cant believe I just read that ... At GS lots of popular games gets a video review cause aldo its alot more work for them many people including me prefer video reviews but they give scores and write reviews for mostly every games on every kind of platforms including of course Sonic Generations.Go back to that game page and you'll see they wrote a review for it..At GS they try very hard to give you a good idea of what a game as to offer, they do their own review while giving you those of multiple other critics + those of the users.Todays standards for video games are very high and GS reviewers have to make professional reviews taking everything into consideration.Lots of games fails to meet those standards and gets ``crushed`` by professionals. It doesnt mean that the game isnt any good.
@aroman010 Thanks for clearing it up for those who haven't played, or taken the time to figure out the gameplay mechanics. I wish more people were of the same mindset as you (I am), to give each title an ACTUAL analysis before making an opinion. Good judgment.
OMFG how could they f**k up the gameplay SO bad!!?! I want Raging blast 2 back, But hey if you want to buy this game go to: https://post.craigslist.org/manage/2668029487 I will make a sweet deal if you bargain a bit with me.
4.0 Seems a bit harsh. The game is graphically beautiful. And while the combat isn't super skilled, it's fun. Deserves something a little higher.
Jesus they were HARSH with this iteration of DBZ, it's a fair review I guess but I hate how they crush a lot of games and many more games don't get a review at all... like Sonic Generations. EVERY game deserves a fair review
Do not follow these stupids comments. Play by yourself before judge. I have played the other Dragon Ball games before too plus this one. I think someone kick his as so many times the he wanted get revenge on the review haha!
@aroman010 HA!! couldnt have said it better myself, i've never played any of the dbz games, wont be playing this. generally gamespot is fair to games that are fun towards a certain fan base and/or lack a lot of depth in gameplay or story... if they make up for it in some way or another. now when u say "this game is fun" or "the visuals capture the anime series perfect" these sentences are usually followed by the word "but" which pretty much dismisses the comment previously made. again i havnt played this game, seems to be a fairly fun, and good looking game that fans of the series would enjoy and maybe deserves a bit better then a 4, maybe not . Just a suggestion to gamespot, and i know i'm probably not the only one to suggest, but maybe there should be a "second opinion" review from another reviewer that might have a different outlook on the game.... of course if the game is that bad, and no one has a different opinion shame on the game! ps quotes arent referring to any specific comment.
@aroman010 As a fan of DBZ and soon to be a purchaser of Ultimate I found your comment very helpfull in explaining the finer points. I didn't think it would be that bad.
well i dont care about what u haters say, i loved the dragon ball series and i think this game look awesome and character creations is a great long awaited twists so :p
I would like to point out that this is not THE SAME GAME as so many of you keep implying. The story of DBZ will always be the story of DBZ. Considering it added a new story for which you can create a character and mess around with is nice. The cold hard fact is how many times can you play the same story and make it different. This game was a VERY GOOD attempt at making a game that can SIMULATE a DBZ fight. Ultimate Tenkaichi is a fighter infused with some RPG and mini-game strategy gameplay. How does this work? I am glad you asked. Aside from the usual Weak/Strong Attack and Guard actions, players will be tasked with storing ki. This is not unfamiliar to DBZ game players. However the new Spirit meter is used to build up your special attack abilities. Spirit can only be charged by using certain attacks while ki can be charged by holding the down button. The whole purpose in fighting in this system is to trigger the 50/50 events Carolyn loves so much. If you trigger a Pink Rush attack you chip away at the opponents health and ki. If you trigger a Green Rush attack you build your spirit meter while chipping away at health. Its an interesting take considering this can make fights longer if one is constantly preventing someone from building their spirit meter. Ki is used to transform your character into a Super Saiyan or Defend against special attacks in a number of interesting ways. Defense against Rushes and special attacks are mini-game based. You will find your self smashing your face buttons to recover in rushes, playing a rhythm based game to evade a special or mashing triangle in a power struggle. This ki based defense system works for capturing a DBZ fight. The spirit system however makes things a little difficult to pull off super moves but perhaps its for the better. This makes the game more strategic since you have to wait for the perfect time to use your specials or someone with ki might force a power struggle or evade it. The other 50/50 sequence is the Melee/Blast Attack transition. This happens when you double tap x and switch your character from Melee Attack position to Blast Attack position. These are the only 2 50/50 chance aspects of the game. The sequences are not at all punishing if you mess up so its not that big of a deal and they are only there to prevent redundancy among the mini-games. It can be frustrating at times when you are trying to set someone up for a special attack though. Sure a 50/50 element can be looked at as a bit unfair since it takes some control out of the players hands, but it this was the developers way of making those aspects of a DBZ fight a possibility. In the end this game has both elements of Tenkaichi and Budokai. The game does a lot right and does a lot wrong. But it is not by any means a 4. My rating would've been between 6.5 or a 7. I am a huge DBZ fan and have played all the games. I preferred the Budokai games so much that I still feel Budokai 3 was the best of all of them and still play it from time to time. My honest opinion is that UltimateTenkaichi is not a bad game at all and is not far behind my precious Budokai 3. Remember you are talking to someone who liked the Dragon Rush Mode because it added to the feeling of chasing down your opponent and smacking them around DBZ style. To prove how much I enjoy this game I would like to add that I have a copy of Batman Arkham City and Uncharted 3 Collectors Edition both in rotation while I continue to build my Saiyan Hero. Though both games are amazing, I visit Ultimate Tenkaichi first so I can continue building my Ultimate Hero. Ultimate Tenkaichi is not a bad game, its not an amazing game, it is a decent DBZ game for FANS of DBZ. If your not a fan of the show, I can see someone complaining about (lack of depth) and scrolling text (which I am sure DBZ fans will skip). But fans of the show who play this game will quickly realize that this fighting system was done in a way that allows you the player to do everything a DBZ character can do. I love how you can block, evade or intercept your enemies special attacks depending on your stored ki. Ultimate Tenkaichi is a new approach to a repetitive series. Its not bad. Its not amazing. Its good enough to please MOST fans. That's my opinion and I am sticking to it.
Odds are the game is bad, but I have to wonder, how many of you are just going by what the reviewer is saying VS actually playing? I have to ask beause the way most talk you act as though you've been playing for weeks now then suggest you won't get the game. You can't have it both ways...
What a shame Namco, it Seems that they used the Word Ultimate Very Loosely. Hope Namco learns from there mistakes in the Near Future.
