Hey, folks. Feeling all Nostalgic for some Super Mutant stomping, but I'm not really sure of just what I should play as. I've done plenty of regular shooty shooty gun builds, and am leaning sliiightly more towards an unarmed or Melee build. The only downside there is that I've played New Vegas, so both Melee and Unarmed feel...kinda gimped in 3, so hmn.
Opinions?

I'm currently doing a melee/explosives build which is pretty fun. I use some small guns too, but for tougher opponents I lay out a few mines, or toss a grenade at them, and then pulverize their crippled bodies into submission while they're still trying to figure out what just happened to them.
It's pretty fun. You can get the minefield quest and go straight there to get around 30 mines early on, then there's no turning back.
I'd suggest you supplement this build with some form of ranged weapon for backup and hairy situations though.

I started an unarmed character recently and so far it seems just as strong as someone who mains small guns. One round of vats tends to kill things that aren't Mirelurks, glowing ones, and the tougher mutants.
It probably helps that I came across Fisto! on my way to Minefield. I just occasionally lure people into mines and carry a gun around to destroy turrets or enemies that are sitting around in a place I can't run to.
A high sneak also helps for the stealthy critical or reverse pickpocketing grenades onto people.

If you haven't tried energy weapons them I recommend it. Get Protectron's Gaze early on, then eventually A3-21's Plasma Rifle and you'll decimate everything.

Unarmed is really strong, especially if you know where to get the right weapons early on.
If you take all 3 ranks of Iron Fist as soon as they become available, you can destroy all the early game stuff with tremendous ease. I started killing Raiders in 2-3 hits with Spiked Knuckles right out of the gate. I feel as if Unarmed is stronger than melee so far. (although I haven't picked up Pyro and made myself a Shiskabob yet)

Vance (from the Family Ties quest) wields a shishkebab which will be in poor condition if looted from him after killing him. If you don't want to kill him, then yea, you need to get some schematics.
-One set of schematics can be obtained from Vance at the end of the Blood Ties questline. You can also kill Vance to obtain his Shishkebab (it is fully functional but very degraded).
-Lucky Harith, the weapon specialized caravan merchant, sells a set of schematics.
-You can find a set on a table near a workbench in a red Brotherhood Outcast shack, directly west of the entrance to SatCom Array NN-03d. The shack does not appear on the map, but is at the base of the hill the Array is built on.

Unarmed is very strong in this game. I can kill Swampfolk in Point Lookout with my bare hands in VATS.

Just do a sneak + melee. They go together like peanut-butter and jelly!

I've always wanted to try a Big Guns build, but early game seems like it would be too hard.
