How do I get rid of the hero items?

I seem to be missing something important. I picked up hero stuff and now I can't get rid of it. What am I supposed to do with it?

You're supposed to head to the statues where you have access to all the worlds and put the items that have a H next to them on the slot. I'm not sure what happens when you get all the hero items though...
