Madden NFL 08

In a way, sports-franchise games have it easy. They build the game once and tweak for the next release. From a screenshot perspective, the differences between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions border on negligible. Aside from a marginally blurrier look on the PlayStation 3, the games look virtually identical. The players have similar shirt and pant folds, and the shadows match up completely. However, the Xbox 360 is considerably smoother in motion, given that it has nearly double the frame rate. The PlayStation 3 version of the game is more than playable, but the 360 definitely edges it out.

Xbox 360       Playstation 3

Xbox 360       Playstation 3

Conclusion

After going through another eight games, we've found a few trends that follow both of these consoles around. Outside of Rainbow Six Vegas 2, our findings didn't show any drastic differences in image quality between the two consoles--nothing compared to what we found when we compared first-generation games in our original comparison feature. The PlayStation 3 generally lags behind the Xbox 360 in high-quality textures and the depth/normal maps that go with them. However, in the same games, the PlayStation 3 sometimes comes ahead with better shadowing and antialiasing. Games on the PS3 do tend to be blurrier than their Xbox 360 counterparts, but the PlayStation 3 games can look just as good as the Xbox 360 games when developers put some effort into it, as is evident with both Grand Theft Auto IV and Burnout Paradise. Overall, the PlayStation 3 outputs visuals that are either on par with the Xbox 360 or only slightly behind.

It's funny: I have looked through the "marked as spam" comments, and it seems to me there are quite a bit of very high quality comments hidden in there! Maybe it's all of the Ps3/360 Fanboy unions coming in as a group and marking them all as bad... who knows?

Notice how almost ALL of the marked comments are exactly +0 and -10. Seems to me like a Union Raid, or a Hacker... having zero + points on very good, non-biased points, and EXACTLY -10 on dozens in a row.

LinuxOS137 had a VERY good point:
"you know, most of these ps3 graphics problems can be fixed if you enable "super contrast", and "RGB HDMI FULL" in display settings. once enabled you will immediately notice deeper blacks, more colors and better shadows."

I love gamespot, but I must say, whenever they said (mainly for the game COD4) the difference is negligible, that is ALWAYS when the Ps3 emerges!

Now, they need an article stating on the 46% failure rate of Xbox 360's, compared to the 13% failure rate of Ps3. Maybe they could write an article about how the Ps3 has FREE online, bluetooth, blu-ray, and FREE connection to wireless internet. Not to mention a much cleaner, more business-looking template for their menu system.

    Did I mention FREE ONLINE??

ps3 should look better in multiplatform games too but oddly thats never the case. only exclusive developers really try to suck the power out of the console.

I own both systems and Assassins Creed on both, it was free with both lol. It is very easy for a real gamer to see the diffrence, and here is what I see here and what I see when I play both versions: Detail = 360 - Shading = 360 = Draw Distance = 360 - Fps = PS3 - Character Detail = 360 - Controls = 360 - Anti Aliasing = 360. But remeber this is just for Assassins Creed game, and the game is not made for the two consoles, it just depends on what the developers try harder for and the hardware for the game itself.

That's right LinuxOS137. People should ignore the brightness/contrast 'issues' because they are not issues, but instead focus on what is said about textures, detail, framerate etc.

cyclonebw, a game isn't just copied to a blue-ray disc to run on the ps3. Each console has their own system architecture, which requires some adjustment to a game's programing in order to run properly on another system. Therefore, a game will almost never appear exactly the same when it is run on different consoles.

You know whats funny? A game is copied to a dual-layer and a blueray so its the same game right? Then why are we comparing graphics? Were comparing the same thing. The game isnt totally remade on another system, just copied.....

I must say I like the graphics on the PS3 a little better. I appreciate the effort but isn't it 2009? Is there any games from 09 that can be used, like SF4 or Fight Night R4 or Prototype? I like some of the comparisons, but most of these games were made before developers could catch up to PS3's hardware capabilities. I'd like to see a company admit that they pushed their game to the limit on the PS3 because thay had more resources to available to do so. When that happens I think I will care about graphical comparisons a lot more. Madden 08?? Orange Box??. Burnout???. Assasins Creed??? How many titles are better comarisons that have dropped in the last year a so than these? Not pissed I just would like to see things evened out a little better. These developers are underdeveloping titles on the PS3 just to save money and to save face. (Opinion) They don't want a system war on account of them making a game look better on one system that would be bad for business. (Opinion also)

All the PS3 images look brighter and more washed out. I think there may be a problem with the capturing done on the PS3 because there is no way the PS3 can be really that far behind the 360 in texture quality. I can see this might happen on some games but virtually every PS3 screenshot was the same way.

    @zskrabs24

the pc is even more powerful than both consoles, yet show me the pc version of a multiformat game which is 'brought down' to the weaker 360 and ps3.

if one version is being 'brought down' as you claim, then that console should run the SAME game BETTER, but thats not happening. look at a game like ut3, it came out on pc and ps3 first. those with a powerful pc could run that game at higher resolutions, with higher res textures, more effects and better framerates than the ps3 version. so the pc version was not brought down becuase of the ps3. and then a 360 version was released 6 months later, and it ran ut3 as good as the ps3, like many multiformat games.

exclusives can push the hardware more than most multiformat games, but exclusives mostly shows what great devs can do on great hardware, it does not tell you which hardware is the best. killzone2 and haze are fps exclusives on the SAME console, but no way is haze in the same league as killzone2 graphically. so if haze was a 360 exclusive, it would be no better than the ps3 version. but put guerilla to work on the 360 like they did on the ps3, and they could get results out of the 360 just as good as they have on the ps3.

so give the devs some respect please and dont act like its all down to the hardware, cause its not, its what the devs can DO on the hardware that counts.

and lastly, there is nothing unfair about comparing multiformat games.

you can't compare multiplatform games. which ever is more powerful is being brought down to the level of the weaker one as a rule. no crap there aren't many differences because it is the same damn game dumb ass. the only way to truly compare graphics is through exclusive games. but that is also kind of unfair and sort of biased and hard to compare. screw game stop and its graphics comparisons. they are extremely unfair and biased. fair and balanced GS, learn what that means please.

And, there is no comparison the PS3 is far better graphically, not to say that the 360 is not good as well but maybe they should compare not cross console games and see which one is better?
