  • Week 5 progress report

Success! I knew I was very close to meeting my goal after I performed my daily Wii Fit tests earlier this week.

Starting Weight: 182 lbs. | Current Weight: 176.6 lbs. | Goal: 177 lbs.

However, the victory was short-lived as the Wii Fit board was quick to remind me that there's no rest for the wicked.

The new goal is toget down to 170 lbs. in two months. Wish me luck!

  • Week 4 progress report

It looks like most of the other staffers have dropped out of the Wii Fit routine due to work, accessibility problems (we still can't find them in stores), or loss of interest. With the exception of the availability issue, I think we can safely say that Wii Fit faces the same challenges as normal fitness routines when it comes to user motivation.

Looks like I'm still on track to reach my goal weight. I spent the weekend moving apartments, so there was a lot of manual labor and not much snacking afterwe emptied out the pantry ahead of the move.

    Starting Weight: 182 lbs. | Current Weight: 179 lbs. |Goal: 177 lbs.

  • Week 3 progress update

It looks like I made progress this week. We're almost halfway through the 6-week test and I'm just over two and a half pounds away from my 5-pound weight loss goal for the period. I can honestly say that my jeans do feel looser now, more than I'd expect from losing just two and a half pounds, so I think I've added some muscle in addition to losing fat. I'll credit the majority of the weight loss to tennis and maintaining a reasonable diet, but Wii Fit's strength training exercises have helped with the muscle gain.

Starting Weight: 182 lbs. | Current Weight: 179.7 lbs. | Goal: 177 lbs.

The graph shows that my weight fluctuates quite a bit day to day, but the overall trend is down.

  • Attack of the DOMS!

Once upon a time, I didn't know what DOMS was. I lived a sheltered, peaceful existence where I sat in front of a computer a lot and hissed at the sunlight from a distance. On the road to becoming a healthy human being who remembers what it means to manufacture vitamin D, you rediscover exercise. This means pain.

I thought I'd gotten that all over and done with, but here's the thing. Say you don't go running or do your Wii Fit exercises for about 5 days. Then you realize you've been slacking and feel guilty. Then you step on the balance board intending to run through all the routines you used to do, at maximum reps. An hour later I felt pretty accomplished but I knew there would be a price to pay. The price of DOMS. EVIL DOMS. It stands for "delayed onset muscle soreness" or "you know how right after you exercise you feel fine, but you wake up the next morning and your limbs feel like they're full of broken glass? Yeah, it's like that". I'm equal parts annoyed with myself for skipping enough days that resuming activity makes me sore, and pleased that I'm sore because that means my muscles should heal up stronger. Yeah, that sounds sort of sick in the head, but I'd like to be able to do pushups without my knees on the floor before the end of the year.

I think I've hit some sort of plateau so far with weight loss. I deviate a fraction of a pound each day, and like the stock market I never really know if it's going to be up or down until I hit the scale. Case in point: I've eaten a lot of rice this past week. A lot. With vegetables. Also, there was an unfortunate incident with a bag of Hershey's Kisses with Almonds that I won't go into, except to say that chocolate is illegally delicious and should be banned. But even after a week of sitting in darkness in my apartment (old buildings in San Francisco have EXCELLENT eletrical) eating high-carb food and doing not much, I still lost weight. I don't understand. Apparently, building a lot of muscle from running really keeps your metabolism up. That's a great thing if you have to live in a world that includes chocolate candy.

It's also good if you happen to have the perfect weight for wobbling on some important BMI line, which I do. If I gain any weight, even a fraction of a pound, it puts my BMI calculation right above the Overweight line and my Mii develops a potbelly. When I lose weight, I drop back below the line and my Mii stays svelte. This happens several times a week. I'm beginning to worry that my Mii is going to develop an image complex, and I can't afford to send it to a shrink. Well, at least not until they release Wii Therapy.

  • Ease up, Wii Fit

Wii Fit has unrealistic expectations. I weigh 215 pounds. My ideal weight is probably 190. As a decorated athlete in my home school I measured in at 190. Yet Wii Fit seems to believe that my ideal weight is 166 pounds. 166 pounds! I probably haven't weighed 166 since 8th grade. I know dogs that weigh more than 166 pounds. With such unrealistic and demanding expectations I'm surprised Wii Fit doesn't have a selection of binge-and-purge exercises somewhere between aerobics and yoga.

I'm venting a little here after gaining 2.2 pounds over the weekend. This could be the result of taking my daily body test minutes after consuming a 2.2 pound burrito today at lunch. Still, asking a relatively thin person to lose 25 percent of their body mass is demanding and probably unhealthy. I'll have to donate eight kidneys and a liver in addition to completing my daily strength exercises. Honestly, I can barely do lunges. This Wii Fit thing is harder than I thought. I'm going to happy hour after work to rethink my health strategy.

Fitness Advice of the Day: Guns don't kill people. Burritos kill people.

    "I'll show you Wii Fit."

  • Weekly update

We're two weeks into the Wii Fit experiment and I'm already behind. Assuming a 5 lb. weight loss goal, I should be down to about 180.3 lbs by now, but I only clocked in at 181 when I did my daily Wii Fit body test this morning.

Starting Weight: 182 lbs. | Current Weight: 181 lbs. | Goal: 177 lbs.

I must admit that I'm surprised that I managed to come in under my starting weight today. I ate an irresponsible amount of food when I went down to Los Angeles for my friend's wedding this past weekend. The food served at regular American-style wedding receptions often includes hors d'oeuvres and a sit-down dinner, but my friend Lori, a Chinese-American, and John, her now-husband went with a traditional Chinese wedding banquet for their reception.

    credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joeandmarla/

(Flickr image for illustrative purposes only--I didn't have a camera at dinner.)

For those of you who have never been to a Chinese wedding banquet, imagine sitting down at a big round table with nine other guests and having an army of servers bring over eight to fourteen heaping dishes of delicious food over a three hour period followed sweet red-bean soup. Lori and John, bringing the best of the Eastern and Western dinner traditions together, also provided lots of cake.

I wasn't going to pass up on all the great food, so I prepared in advance by doing a hard workout the day before and then again a couple hours before the wedding. I could hardly walk the next day because of all the lower-body work, but I had a great time at the wedding and it looks like I was able to mitigate most of the dinner with exercise. If you ever get a chance to attend a Chinese wedding banquet, go for it!

  • Focal Point

Well, I unlocked Advanced Step, but it took me off guard, asking me to do things I wasn't expecting! Tomorrow should go much smoother. My balance also felt a bit off, which explains the slight downturn in Yoga poses. I am a little miffed that I ran faster on purpose today, assuming I would get a higher score in running, but I actually scored lower! Pshh.

  • Feeling the burn

I ripped off like 250 hula hoop spins this afternoon and it feels like someone punched me in the pelvis. My hips were gyrating so fast I looked like a Viagra commercial. Poor James Yu sits near the Wii Fit station and felt obliged to take movie footage of me, which pretty much ensures I can never run for president. That's the kind of footage that can ruin a campaign faster than you can say Swift Boat captain.

That said, I finally got a decent workout after going through the strength exercises. I was legitimately sore walking to the bus stop after work from all those lunges, but it's finally starting to pay off. I've lost three pounds already and lowered my BMI from obese to almost obese in just one weekend, and that's a pleasant surprise considering all I did this weekend was drink beer, play golf and eat burritos. I think if I can keep this up every day I just might deflate my spare tire -- the Wii Fit, I mean, not the golf/beer/burritos. I'll be sure to post some topless pics soon.

[UPDATE] I ate a turkey burger for dinner. Dedication.

  • Goals and strategy

My goal for this Wii Fit blog is pretty simple: lose five pounds by the end of the six week process. I came in at just over 182 lbs. in today's weigh-in, exactly how much I weighed last week. It looks like I need to make a plan and start following it if I want to clock in at 177 lbs. when this experiment comes to a close on July 2nd.

    Weight: 182 lbs.

    BMI: 27.63

    Goal: 177 lbs.

I won't be able to achieve my goal just by playing Wii Fit alone. I also need to pay attention to my daily food intake because I'll need to burn more calories than I consume in order to lose weight. Various online calculators peg my basal metabolic rate (BMR) at around 1850 calories--that's the amount of energy I'd burn if I spent the entire day in bed doing absolutely nothing. Daily activities such as getting out of bed, walking around, and going to work probably bring my burn rate up to around 2200 calories per day. My weight hasn't changed over the past six months, so I'm going to assume that I've been consuming calories equal to my BMR.

If a pound of fat is equal to roughly 3,500 calories, that means I'll need to reduce my daily caloric intake by 500 calories, exercise enough to burn off an extra 500 calories a day, or do a little of both in order to lose a pound a week. I already play tennis once or twice a week. I should be able to burn off an extra 3,500 calories per week if I start playing tennis four times a week, add in Wii Fit training, and cut my food intake to about 2000 calories per day. I don't even know if I need to throw Wii Fit in there because tennis alone burns over 600 calories per hour, but I think that Wii Fit will still be useful for the daily weight monitoring and strength training exercises.

    How does that plan sound?

  • Weighing in a week late

Y'know, they say that it's not that people don't have time for exercise, it's that they don't make it a priority. I, sadly, must confess to such behavior. We're a week in and I just made the weigh-in. Time to make up for lost ground!

    BMI: 23.6 (5'9", 157.4 lbs.)
    BF%: 16.1%
Wii Age: 44 (actual age: younger than that)
Goal: lose 2 lbs., get Wii Fit to my actual age, improve my balance scores

The ski jump and soccer games are pretty fun. The balance board one, where you have to get the ball in the hole, was tough - it wasn't even a question of balance, just of puzzle skills, which apparently are not my forte when I'm trying to keep balance at the same time. I also tried some of the strength ones, and was shocked to discover I'm as bad at pushups as everyone else in the office. Must be something in the coffee they give us. . .

  • Off The Wagon

I am not surprised that some stats went swinging in the negative direction. I didn't exercise a bit since I wasn't feeling well, and I embraced my sedentary lifestyle. The effect? There is no way I am meeting my 22 pound weight loss goal, but we shall see what happens. Here are the latest figures:

Wii Fit Results, Day 7: Kevin VanOrd

Goal: Lose 22 pounds in 2 weeks

    Weight: 266.2 pounds (+.7)
    BMI: 34.28 (+.7)
    Basic Balance Test: 0% (-75%)
    Wii Fit Age: 36 (+1)

    Scores:

    Aerobics

    Basic Step: 251 (-14)
    Running: 105 (+2)

    Yoga

    Sun Salutation: 83 (-11)
    Half Moon:
    80 (-6)
    Tree: 72

    Strength

    Single-Leg Extensions: 74 (+4)
    Rowing Squats: 100 (+68)
    Torso Twists: 95 (+3)

I expect that things will improve now that I am in the office and will have time to devote to the balance board.

  • Call to Arms

I didn't have time on Friday to visit Wii Fit, but I did make time on Thursday. Also note that I will be out of the office on Monday, so my next weigh-in and Wii Fit session will be Tuesday, though I will be visiting the gym in the meanwhile.

I also wanted to mention that the rowing squats exercise is flatly broken. Bethany and I both have difficulties meeting the awful balance requirements, though we're doing the exercise exactly as it is depicted. Unless you do the exercise on the balls of your heels, you can't get results--yet there is no way the exercise should be done in such an uncomfortable, clearly broken manner. I am dissapointed that the game seems incapable of noticing that I am doing the exercise properly.

But hey--I have results already! Changes in values from the last test will be noted in parentheses. Good changes will be green. Bad changes will be red. Take a peek:

Wii Fit Results, Day 2: Kevin VanOrd

Goal: Lose 22 pounds in 2 weeks

    Weight: 265.5 pounds (-1.5 pounds)
    BMI: 34.21 (-.19)
    Basic Balance Test: 75% (+75%)
    Wii Fit Age: 35 (-13)

    Scores:

    Aerobics

    Basic Step: 265 (-1)
    Running: 103 (+13)

  • Have mat, no Wii Fit

I won't be able to get any Wii Fit in over the weekend because I'm still trying to find a copy of the game. I swung by my local Target on my way to work Wednesday morning, but all of the units were already claimed by customers that had started lining up before the store opened. I know it's my own fault for failing to pre-order the game in advance, but, seriously, preordering a fitness game? Who preorders fitness games? Everyone that has a Wii Fit, apparently.

I'll find a use for you someday, Wii Fit Mat.

    Hori Wii Fit Mat

  • Wii Fit, How dare you!

6'1", 215 pounds and I play in a very strenous kickball league, so I am definitely not fat. Wii Fit doesn't agree, and went so far as to call me almost obese. I'll show you, Wii Fit. Little do you know I was the most athletic student in my entire home school, and now I'm taking all my athletic prowess and turning it against you. Not only will I get my BMI down to a healthy 22 and lose 25 pounds in two months, but I will also start drinking light beer at kickball. LIGHT BEER!

    blargh!

Yesterday I jumped on Wii Fit for the first time on my way out the door -- only had time for 155 hula hoop rings before taking off. But I must say, I am very impressed with the goal-setting and stat tracking with Wii Fit and I haven't been this motivated to excersise since I uploaded the Rocky soundtrack to my iPod. Even if I never step on that balance board for an actual exercise, opting instead to hit the gym or run, I love how the Wii Fit is my own personal trainer. Sometimes a videogame calling you fat is all the motivation you need.

  • Wii Fit Diary - Temptations of CNET

Today I've been being tempted by a plethora of naughty foods just hanging around the CNET UK office. Click the video to see how much good food is surrounding me waiting to be consumed.

  • My first day of Wii Fit

Today I made an appointment at my gym with a fitness advisor before embarking on the GameSpot Wii Fit challenge. In the interest of some scientific analysis, I thought it was a good idea to get a professional test to track alongside the Wii Fit activity.

As I suspected, I could do with dropping some weight and being a bit fitter, and hopefully with some regular exercise Wii Fit will help me acheive some of those goals. Also, Wii Fit seems to be fairly accurate with its analysis, even though the fitness expert had some doubts on the validity of BMI as a measurement.

Anyway, it's all in the video so check it out and let me know what you think!

  • It Ain't Over 'til the Fat Man Wheezes

I'm fat. In fact, according to Wii Fit, I am obese. This is no surprise to anyone with a brain and eyes.

As a result, I joined a gym recently and the pounds are starting to drop away. I don't intend for Wii fit to replace my new exercise regimen, but on the days that I can't get to the gym, it seems like the perfect stand-in, and I am hoping it will be a reasonable adjunct to the whole thing.

It means being honest about all of this. Every time I use the game I will be updating this spot on my results. It also means not cheating on the exercises. It's sort of embarrassing to be "the fat guy," but no shame, no fortune I suppose. And yes, I made that phrase up. My new mantra is "No Shame, No Fortune!" Boosh!

And now, on to the rundown. Please note that the only statistic I am providing that is not coming from Wii Fit is my weight, which is coming from a scale. They were within a pound of each other, but I feel more comfortable with the high-end electronic scale we are using. Also note that I do not plan on playing any balance games, but will be concentrating on yoga, aerobics, and strength exercises. I won't be doing every exercise, or the same exercises every time, but when I do, I will not the change from the last time I performed it, as well as the changes to my stats.

Wii Fit Results, Day 1: Kevin VanOrd

Goal: Lose 22 pounds in 2 weeks (Yes, I know it is a long shot, but in tandem with my gym visits, not undoable or unhealthy.)

Weight: 267 pounds (fat men unite!)
    Balance: 47.8%-52.2%
    BMI: 34.4
Basic Balance Test: 4 Rounds out of 5 before time ran out
    Wii Fit Age: 48

    Scores:

    Aerobics

    Hula Hoop: 72 Spins
    Basic Step: 266
    Running: 90%

    Yoga

    Deep Breathing: 92
    Half Moon: 81

    Strength

    Single-Leg Extensions: 85
Push-Ups & Side Planks: 100 (Note that there is no way I can do traditional push-ups right now. These were performed while I was on my knees.)
    Torso Twists: 93

    ________________________________________________

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

  • Episode 1: A Preorder Came In Handy, For Once

My journey into the wild world of fitness actually started about 4 months ago when I looked around and said, "Okay, so sitting at my desk all day and playing lots of WoW and avoiding sunlight and living like a sociopathic gargoyle is not good for the figure." The key for me was changing up my routine--nowadays I make sure to eat breakfast everyday, spend time outside, eat smaller meals, and take the time to run around. I've lost around 30 pounds, but I'm always looking for new stuff to do. For one, running up and down the stairs in the CNET building is a little strange, and for two, running up and down the hills in San Francisco hurts. A lot. I also needed a way to keep track of how I was doing, since I don't own a scale and my current method of evaluating progress rests on whether or not my clothes still fit. So when I came back into the city at the end of April (by the way, I was gone for three months, hello again) one of the first things I did was place a preorder for Wii Fit. Which turns out to actually have been a smart thing to do, because it seems like once again Nintendo can't keep a product on shelves. Manufacturing, people! It's hard!

So this morning I ran out and secured my Wii Fit. While lugging the box home I was accosted by a hotel doorman who excitedly wanted to know where I'd gotten it from, which made me feel less awkward about carrying a box around the city that screamed WII FIT from all sides.

Here it is. My apartment is more sepia-toned than I realized.

    Boxy!

Then I opened it. The bag in which the balance board is contained is SO DANGEROUS, they need to warn you in about a million different languages not to let children anywhere near it. I appreciate the thoughtful care given to safety.

    Bags are deadly!

I then hooked it up. Unfortunately, I have to use the board on a carpet, so the scale is probably going to be off a little. However, it did tell me I've lost about 10 pounds since the last time I weighed myself, which is nice. My BMI slides in just under the Overweight line, which is a little arbitrary but okay. However, my Wii Fit age is 42. FORTY-TWO!!! What the hell is that?! It told me my abs were weak.. okay, so I don't like situps, is that a crime? TWELVE YEARS worth of crime? I hate you Nintendo.
