  • Logitech announces new G-series PC gaming peripherals

Logitech's back in the mix with a full update of their of high-end G-series PC gaming peripherals: the G19 Gaming Keyboard, the G35 Headset and the G9x Gaming Mouse.

The G19 keyboard builds upon the already feature rich G15 keyboard with several key upgrades. The G19 features a full color 320x240 LCD display capable of displaying all sorts of gaming information and non-gaming related information including images and videos. Keyboard controls will let you switch out what's displayed on the screen while you're playing a game. The G19 also features twelve fully programmable keys, with up to three different presets per key. Two onboard USB 2.0 ports provide additional peripheral hookups.

Logitech's new G35 headset offers 7.1 surround sound thanks to second generation Dolby Headphone technology. Dolby Headphone allows headsets to very realistically simulate a full set of 7.1 home theater speakers. The built-in microphone comes with noise canceling technologies and gives players the ability to mask their real voice. Choose between six different preset voices including cyborg, mutant, giant, troll, alien, and the ever popular space squirrel. Built-in controls let you adjust the volume, microphone, surround sound and voice presets. The G35 also comes with three different size headbands to better accommodate various noggin sizes.

Sensitive just got more sensitiver, or something like that with the new Logitech G9x Gaming Mouse. The G9x sports a brand new laser sensor that has adjustable settings capable of sending the mouse from 200 to 5000 DPI on the fly. The G9x comes with two interchangeable mouse grips like the G9, but has more memory for up for five different user profiles. The G9x also has the prerequisite adjustable weight system and multi-colored LED lighting system.

The G9x mouse, G19 keyboard, and G35 headset will all be available in March with $99, $199, and $129 MSRPs, respectively.

  • Nyko announces third-party Wii Remote

Peripheral manufacturer Nyko has announced three new products for the Wii platform here at CES. The Wand (not to be confused with "a wand") leads the charge. It's Nyko's Wii Remote replacement device. Nyko's controller has the same motion-control, vibration, and built-in speaker capabilities as the Wii Remote, but it has a few changes such as oversized "1" and "2" buttons and a rubberized battery cover designed to improve usability. Nyko's also pretty excited about The Wand's accessory port because it's able to pass all of the Wii Remote buttons to an attached accessory. For example, the port would allow a pistol accessory to plug into the bottom of the controller and have all of the pistol buttons mapped electronically to buttons on the Wii Remote.

The two other (less exciting, but also less likely to draw lawsuits from Nintendo) products Nyko announced today are the Charge Station EX and Kama Charge Kit. The Charge Station EX is an updated version of the original Charge Station that now includes two LED bars to display battery charge levels.

The Kama Charge Kit is a peripheral stand that can charge a Wii Remote and a Wireless Kama controller. We didn't know that there were enough Kama owners out there to warrant a standalone charger, but it turns out that the Kama Charge Kit actually includes a Wireless Kama controller. All of the accessories Nyko announced today will be available this April.

  • HP announces Firebird PC with VoodooDNA

    HP Firebird

The VoodooPC inspired HP Firebird system announced today at CES highlights two design themes that HP believes will be prominent in 2009: power efficiency and affordability. VoodooDNA based PCs haven't been described as affordable or power efficient in the past--the flagship Blackbird system is known for its powerful hardware and equally intimidating price, but the coming year is going to be challenging for consumers and industry trends in component design have opened the door for power-efficient gaming systems.

The new HP Firebird system shares the same floating-wedge shape as the Blackbird 002, but in a much smaller package, roughly one third of the size of the Blackbird chassis. Designers achieved the space savings by switching to smaller, power-saving components and by moving the power supply to an external 350W power brick. You won't find an Intel Core i7 CPU or dual GeForce GTX 280 cards in this system, but the Firebird will have plenty of gaming performance with its Intel Core 2 Quad processor and Nvidia GeForce 9800S GPUs. Power-efficient components don't generate a lot of noise because they don't need as much active cooling and the Firebird will be quieter than most PCs thanks to its liquid cooling system. The GeForce GPUs come in laptop MXM modules which are great for power and heat, but will make upgrading difficult if not impossible later on because aftermarket GPU upgrades generally aren't available in MXM format.

  • Nvidia reveals GeForce GTX 295

    GeForce GTX 295

In an effort to make self-conscious PC gamers feel even more insecure about their systems, Nvidia has revealed plans to launch a new dual-GPU GeForce GTX 295 at CES on January 8, 2008. The GeForce GTX 295 will be the first card to use an updated GT200 GPU built using a 55nm manufacturing process.

    8-pin, 6-pin power connectors

The card will have two GT200 GPUs for a total of 480 processing cores, twice as many cores as Nvidia's flagship single-GPU card, the GeForce GTX 280. The new GPUs will have a 576 MHz core clock and a 1242 MHz shader clock. That's slightly slower than the GTX 280's 602 MHz core and 1296 MHz shader clocks, but the GTX 295 still wins in the GPU quantity column. The card will also have 1,792 MB of onboard GDDR3 memory clocked at 1,998 MHz.

    Video outputs

The dual-slot cards will come with HDMI and two dual-link DVI outputs. The new chips are more power efficient, but two of them will still draw up to 289W according to Nvidia. Plan on picking up a 1kW+ if you plan on putting two of these together for Quad SLI.

No word yet on whether or not the card will be able to run Grand Theft Auto IV at max settings.

  • PlayStation Home Open Beta is the official launch

    Ligne Roset furniture

We just met up with Jack Buser the director of PlayStation Home for Sony Computer Entertainment to get a sneak preview of what's going to be available in the Home open beta. Just to be clear, the "open beta" is the official launch of PlayStation Home. Tomorrow, PlayStation 3 owners all over the world will be able to download and try out the service from the PlayStation Network menu in the XMB. Sony is calling tomorrow's launch an open beta because they view Home as an evolving world that's going to get constant content updates moving forward, similar to how an MMO expansion may launch but have new content patched in later.

Players that have been testing the closed beta will find several changes in Home when they log into the service. Sony developers have redesigned the entire Central Plaza area with new graphics and a new interactive "Saucer Pop" game where up to 4 players fly individual flying saucers and compete against each other in a competition to gather stars and fuel while avoiding bombs. The entire game takes place over a pond in the Central Plaza, so you'll see everyone walking around in the background as your UFO whizzes by. The Central Plaza also has an updated Listen@Home jukebox in the dance area that lets players vote on the next song to be played. The Mall will soon get a couple of new stores based on real life designers. Players will be able to get virual items from clothing company Diesel and furniture from Ligne Roset.

  • PS3 Wireless Keypad

PlayStation Home is coming...eventually. When it does arrive, you're going to want to communicate with your virtual friends to tell them how awesome you are. Using the controller and the onscreen keyboard is going to get old quickly, which is why Sony has just released a wireless keypad for the PlayStation 3.

Setting up the PS3 keypad is a breeze. Unlike a Bluetooth headset, there's no need to go into the PS3's menus and pair the keyboard with the system--it works right away assuming you're using firmware version 2.50 or later. Simply clip the unit onto a controller and turn keypad on (hopefully you've got an extra USB cable around because you must charge the keypad independent of the controller), turn on the controller and the PS3, and you're good to go.

Like any small keypad, the PS3's QWERTY keypad takes a short while to grow accustomed to, but it doesn't take long before you're jumping back and forth between the controller and the keypad, no doubt fragging fools and telling them how "l33t" you are. The keypad's layout is fine, however, it's curious that there's a dedicated button for an accented "E," but you have to hold the keypad's right shoulder button and press the number 2 to make an @ symbol. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's something you'll think about every time you enter an email address. At least you'll save a few seconds here with the shortcut buttons that take you directly to your message box or your friends list.

  • Put a face on your mouse

    Skull G9 ID Grip

Logitech has a solution for all of us PC gamers that have ever had the urge to affix personalized images on top of our gaming mice. We can now order a customized G9 Laser Mouse ID Grip from Logitech's Website . The G9 Laser Mouse, as you may remember, already comes with two interchangeable grips, so snapping on a new grip isn't a problem.

    For the horde!

You can select from premade images on Logitech's site--we saw an eyeball, flames, a couple of Red Alert 3 shots, and a variety of abstract designs with names like "Trance" and "Swircle," but serious mousing enthusiasts will want to upload their own pictures. Product marketing manager Vincent Tucker showed us a few sample grips emblazoned with his Tauren warrior from World of Warcraft.

  • How's your Netflix playback on NXE?

Yes, gaming at work is great.

Microsoft released the New Xbox Experience last week and we wanted to ask our readers how the Netflix video streaming performance has been for you at home. Netflix's Instant Watch FAQ recommends 700kb/s for basic video and 2.4 Mb/s for DVD quality video.

My cable Internet service is rated at 4Mb/s, but it's come in as high as 12Mb/s in online speed tests. I caught up on Heroes on Monday night and the HD stream worked perfectly at the initial launch. However, the service stopped and downgraded the video half-way through one of the episodes when my roommate started a large download. We're going to modify the quality of service settings on the router to set Xbox traffic at a higher priority. The other option will be to try out port forwarding.

It looks like my cable connection is large enough to handle the HD streams, but our news man Tor Thorsen tells me that the service is practically unwatchable on his 1.5Mb/sDSL line at home.

Leave a comment if you've had any problems with Netflix streaming on NXE and what you've done to fix it.

  • Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo Wheel

Here's a tip if you're in a race using Fanatec's Porsche 911 Turbo racing wheel: Watch those buttons. Like any racing wheel worth its salt the 911 Turbo features assignable buttons--nine in fact on the face of the wheel itself. Perhaps due to the shape of the wheel face and how your hands sit on top of it, assigning the pit speed limiter button in your favorite racing sim to a button on the upper right or upper can have disastrous results.

We speak from experience. While speeding through a tight corner in SimBin's Race 07, we were gripped the wheel during a hard left turn and inadvertently hit the top left button with our palm just below the thumb. Immediately our car slowed down to the pit speed limit and our race was ruined. Oops. A quick exit out of the race and into the menus to re-assign the pit speed limiter to another button, and we were back on track and back in action.

  • Intel Core i7 Hands-On Preview

Intel has been unchallenged on the desktop and laptop front since launching the Core architecture in 2006. The Core architecture trounced AMD at the high-end, forcing the Phenom manufacturer to fight back with aggressive value pricing. For the better part of two years, AMD has struggled to compete with Intel's mainstream processors, leaving the performance and extreme categories completely unchallenged for Intel. Now with the release of Intel's newest Core i7 CPU and the Express X58 chipset, the gap widens ever further.

    core i7

The Core i7 CPU lineup will be released in three flavors: Core i7-965 Extreme Edition, Core i7-940, and Core i7-920. All of the processors will arrive with four CPU cores, Hyper-Threading, 8MB of L3 cache, and they will be built on Intel's 45nm manufacturing process. All of the processors will run on a 1066MHz front-side bus. The 965 Extreme Edition will run at 3.2GHz, and like other Extreme Edition processors, it will come with an unlocked multiplier that allows for easier overclocking. Intel's Core i7-940 and Core i7-920 will run at 2.93GHz and 2.66GHz, respectively. The new CPU architecture brings with it a new LGA 1366 socket; older LGA775 motherboards that supported the Core 2 CPUs won't be compatible with the Core i7.

Like the other Extreme Edition processors before it, the Core i7-965 will cost $1,000. The Core i7-940 and Core i7-920 will cost $562 and $284, respectively.

  • Xbox 360 hard drive game installation testing

About seven minutes, give or take.

We spent more time investigating the hard disk game installation feature included with the New Xbox Experience. We pulled The Orange Box, Command & Conquer 3, NBA Live 09, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed out of the GameSpot game library to measure installation times and to see how game load times improved with hard drive installations.

We found that installation time varies depending on the size of the game which isn't surprising because the installation process copies the data from the DVD to the hard drive--bigger games are going to take longer to rip. Installing the 4.7GB Orange Box disc took 6 minutes and 57 seconds while it only took 5 minutes and 35 seconds to get Command & Conquer 3's 3.6GB onto the hard drive. The Force Unleashed, weighing in at 6.6GB, extended out the installation time to 9 minutes and 47 seconds and it took 9 minutes and 7 seconds to install NBA Live 09's 6.3GB of data.

The load time benefits are fairly respectable, but you're not going to see anything close to instant game loads. Getting Orange Box from the dashboard to the game's start menu took 30 seconds when playing from disc, but only 25 seconds when launched from the hard drive. Command & Conquer 3's game launch time improved the most, dropping from 33 seconds to 17 seconds. NBA Live 09 only improved by 8 seconds, going from 45 seconds to 37 seconds. The Force Unleashed yielded a larger percentage drop, going from 33 seconds to 25 seconds.

  • New Xbox Experience Hands-On

We've seen the New Xbox Experience twice this year, at E3 2008 where Microsoft first announced the update and later at a press briefing in San Francisco. We got the opportunity to install the New Xbox Experience on a console here in the GameSpot offices three weeks before the update's official launch on November 19. We've already written about most of the new features in past previews but we can now post screenshots of everything now that Microsoft PR isn't controlling the flow of pictures.

The new dashboard interface expands out to take advantage of high-resolution displays, and menus now display more information through graphics rather than through text.

    Movies

    Detail movie view

Games and movies show up with full box cover art instead of nondescript text listings.

    Xbox Guide

The new menu system is a little disorienting at first when we tried to overcome years of trained menu navigation, but we got accustomed to the new menus after a few sessions. It also helped that the new Xbox Guide is a miniaturized version of the old bladed menus. Whenever we got lost, we pulled up the Guide like a trusted map.

    Achievements

It might take some exploration, but you'll find everything eventually.
  • Sony announces firmware updates for the PS3 and PSP

Sony announced that both the PlayStation 3 and PSP will receive firmware updates that will fix bugs and add new features. The PlayStation 3's firmware will be upgraded to 2.50 and the PSP will hit 5.0. Sony representatives did not reveal a firm date for launch, but mentioned that the updates will be released in October.

The biggest update to the PSP gives it native access to the PlayStation Store. You won't have to navigate the store using the web browser anymore or use a PC to create accounts, download games, trailers, and other files. The new store interface will allow users to redeem PlayStation cash cards from within the interface. In addition, the PC based version of the PlayStation store will receive a refresh.

The PSP will get a new QWERTY style text input system. Users who favor the original input scheme will still be able to access it via an option. Other minor updates include a new sleep timer for the PSP's music player.

    PSP firmware

The PlayStation 3's new firmware will bring a broad set of updates to the console. Bluray playback will receive an innovative feature that lets users browse movie scenes in 1,2, and 5min intervals. Each scene will show up as a thumbnail and will show an accompanying video preview when selected. In action, the new feature certainly seems impressive, and should make finding exact moments in a movie relatively easy. Users of video files will get sequential playback, which will play back-to-back videos seamlessly and without interruption.

Sure to bring smiles to many gamers, the PS3 will now have the ability to take in-game screenshots. Sony revealed that when a certain combination of buttons are pressed, the PS3 will automatically take a screenshot and save it to the photo section of the console. After that, users are free to create slide shows and even copy them off the console for use. Sony indicated that the game must support the feature, and that numerous upcoming games would do so.

On the power front, the PS3 will now have an auto-shut off feature that can be set at various time intervals. Users will also be able to queue up downloads and have the console automatically shut down after the files have been received. To further save energy, the PlayStation 3 will now support auto shut off for controllers.

The PS3's trophy system will also receive a bit of an update. Users will now receive an icon to represent their overall level based upon how many trophies they have and of what quality they are(bronze, silver, gold). You'll also be able to browse and compare your trophies to those of your friends for specific games. Friends lists will now include a notification of when a user last logged on.

A new info board will give users up to date information on game releases, movies, and other pertinent information along with direct links to the content.

Sony's PS3 Bluetooth headset will now have auto-syncing capabilities using the USB cable. The update will also let you see how much battery life is left on screen and will enable High Quality (HQ) voice chats.

  • Nintendo DSi Walkthrough

Nintendo announced the new DSi last night in Japan, and we have our news viking Tor Thorsen live blogging Nintendo of America's conference here stateside. We decided to use the official Nintendo DSi press images to put together a little photo tour of the new portable.

    Nintendo DSi open face

The DSi has larger LCD screens, 3.25 inches compared to 3 inches for the DS Lite. It also comes equipped with two 640x480 VGA cameras. One sits in between the screens facing the player, and the other sits on the top cover. You'll be able to edit and share photos online according to NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime.
