Sony has just announced a trio of new hardware products today at the Leipzig Games Convention including a new 160GB PlayStation 3 bundle, new PSP-3000 bundles, and a PS3 Wireless Keypad.

The 160GB PlayStation 3 will come in a limited-edition bundle packaged with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a PlayStation Network download voucher for PAIN, and a DualShock 3 wireless gamepad. The bundle will ship in November for $499, which is the same asking price as the current 80GB PlayStation 3 Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle.

PSP-3000 in silver

Sony's second major announcment is that it's releasing new PSP Entertainment packs that include an upgraded PSP-3000 system. According to Sony, the new PSP will have a built-in microphone and an upgraded LCD screen with "a wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio to deliver deeper, more vibrant colors, as well as anti-reflection technology." The built-in microphone is a welcome addition because you currently need a headset to use communication services such as Skype and Go!Messenger on the older PSP systems.

Will the pack-in movie be National Treasure 2?

The new PSP will be packaged with a Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack and a new PSP 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack. The Ratchet & Clank package will include a silver PSP, a 1GB memory stick, a yet to be named UMD movie, and a PlayStation Network download voucher for echochrome. The Rachet & Clank pack will ship this October at the familiar $199 price point and expect the PSP-3000 to slip into the $169 PSP Core Pack later this year.

PS3 Wireless Keypad

The last major hardware announcement is a new Bluetooth wireless keypad accessory for the PlayStation 3. The PS3 Wireless Keypad, designed to fit onto a DualShock 3 or Sixaxis gamepad, will give players an easy way to enter text on the PS3. Expect the PS3 Wireless Keypad to arrive this November.

The Bluetooth keypad should work with smart phones too.

the keyboard does look a bit out of place but it doesn't seem to bad for when your gaming away and want to communicate quickly to your team-mates.

I am a 360 owner and have held off buying a PS3. This is great news! Now I'm looking forward to getting the 160GB bundle. Glad i waited.

The chat pad is a must. I have one for the xbox and it makes sending messages easy. Without one it's very wearisome. Doesn't look bad, hope it doesn't affect should button access.

    PS3 + X360 = pwnography

Anyone know of a pre-order location for the 'Bluetooth Wireless Keypad' or even a pricing for it, thinking that its 'due' out in November you'd think it would be on all our fave sites by now... Play, Amazon etc...

Why couldn't they make a keypad that doesn't need to plug into a controller? Just a seperate mini keyboard that charges and pairs etc like the controller does. Come on Sony!

The only things i'm worrying about are if the the keypad will make the controller too heavy, and how annoying it will be to either type with one hand or have to put the controller down - say on your lap - if you want to type :s

I wouldn't count on the psp-3000 though, nothing a great deal if they didn't bother doing any specific upgrade, as for the wireless keyboard, it's quite innovative to sling it above the controller, make a user friendly chat board, than some clunky keyboard beside you

If they really wanted to improve the PSP all they would hafta do is put a second analog stick on it. Gameplay would improve ALOT

I hope that keypad isn't too heavy, and doesn't interfere with the six axis controls, so that I can send messages on the fly with the in game XMB or for home.

Sony isn't copying, all these add ons are just inevitable and will be available for all systems, its just a matter of who releases it first. I just don't think having the keyboard on top of the gamepad is a good idea though.

Rip off from Microsoft and who in their right mind would choose a ps3 over 360 or wii 360 has all the same games except metal gear solid 4 which is good and all but you get it and wii has brawl which is 10 like halo 3 and call of duty 4 but wii also has wiifit and good baseball tennis etc. My point is I wouldn't buy a $400 ps3 over $250 wii or $300 360 pro or $400 elite

I thought it was already clear- fan boys, shut the hell up! And for the record, I think it's ok to integrate a good idea even if someone has done it before. Otherwise you'll end up with an inferior product, despite there being a perfectly viable solution right there. By the way, a seven core cell processor, and a new Nvidia RSX graphics chip are both original sony ideas. They're at the heart of the PS3, and I don't think you should base your view on a company on what minor peripherals they bring out.

Nice keypad but the new psp makes no big difference...
the PS3 160GB is designed for the new market Sony wants to establish, they do it coz they wanna sell more games on Playstation Network instead of BD discs.. So they need more powerful PS3s

"THE CONSOLE WAR GOES TO WII WITH SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL N ITS REVOLUTIONARY OST"

Guys, please spare us this kind of rubbish. The idea that a beat-'em-up game containing largely tired, and all recycled characters is revolutionary in any way, is laughable. Ha ha.

And this "Still Xbox360 rules". Contribute something good or piss off to the Xbox section, and do us all a favour so we don't have to listen to your crap. You don't have to sit there trying to justify your console to us. Go and play on it instead. PS3 bashers? Blind fanboys? TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE.

As for the article, I like the keyboard and while i do already have a USB one, I appreciate that not everyone has or wants one- as such I think that this idea is one which will be widely welcomed. And I like that they're updating the PSP though fundamentally i think it's a good idea poorly executed. Whilst being very capable for a handheld, lack of good content means it shoots itself in the foot. I won't be buying one, and i think it's time to start afresh with something in the not too distant future.

    Quote-
"I thought they might update the PSP again sometime soon, maybe a PSP2 or something like that with maybe a HD LCD screen? ". A good idea in principle, however the graphics processing needed to support an HD screen for gaming, really is beyond what a handheld can do today. The size of todays high-end video cards for pc's gives some indication. And they get constantly bigger. For modern HD gaming you'd be looking at something like, at least, an Nvidia 7950 GX2, to one or two 8800's, 9800's or a GTX 260 or 280. All of which are juggernauts. I know fitting two 8800's in my large case was a feat, never mind fitting liquid cooling in too. Thus the issue presents itself that these modern cards need a huge amount of cooling. They can run at 60 degrees with good air cooling, if you're very lucky! Imagine a smaller one stuffed into a handheld case. You'll burn your hands pretty quick.

With this amount of graphics power, you then really need to be overclocking high, or shelling out plenty of pounds to find a CPU which won't bottleneck your beautiful shiny new GPU's. Because... well, you wouldn't want to waste that power. And a whole new plethora of problems arises.

    Play nice

wouldn't the keypad have been better at the botton like the 360's? It looks like it would be difficult to use, well not difficult but you would have to reposition your hands.
