Dwarves, Demons, and Medieval Face-Stabbing

Take a video tour through the crazy strategy and action games coming to PC from Paradox Interactive.

If you're a PC gamer, chances are you're familiar with Paradox. It's a publisher well known for its catalog of "grand strategy" titles like Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings, but lately the Swedish company has been widening its output with more humorous and action-oriented fare. We recently got a chance to check out some of the stuff coming to PC from Paradox over the next year and came away with a few developer walkthroughs for you to enjoy…

War of the Roses

Class-based online multiplayer action with a persistence system that grants a dizzying number of unlocks and customization options. Sound familiar? Now imagine that formula against the backdrop of 15th-century England, with crossbowmen, knights on horseback, and lots and lots of blood. War of the Roses is already super fun, and while it's still a little rough around the edges (you'll occasionally spawn 20 feet in the sky) we can tell this one's going to attract quite a dedicated following.

Impire

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you ran into a mighty hell demon with a short man complex? Well, Impire might be able to answer that question for you. This newly announced dungeon-building strategy game has you playing as a powerful lord of evil who's accidentally been turned into an imp after a summoning incident gone slightly awry. But regardless of your size, you'll have to construct dungeons in order to build up your army of hell spawn so that you can send them above ground and do your bidding. There seems to be a pretty heady learning curve here, but we definitely dig the interesting mix of dark imagery with goofy humor.

Dungeonland

Dungeonland is another game that combines dark imagery with goofy humor, only here the emphasis is much more on the goofy side of things. This one's an action-RPG where you venture through a deeply twisted amusement park, one apparently built by some sort of maniacal wizard. You can play co-op, hacking and slashing your way through a cartoonish onslaught of enemies, or you jump into Dungeon Master mode and play as the evil wizard guy himself, deciding which enemies to spawn in front of those poor heroes and just generally acting like a jerk.

A Game of Dwarves

You know that moment in Minecraft when you're digging below ground and wonder to yourself, what would happen if I just kept going? Now, imagine that you're also Scottish. And a dwarf. And control a team of dwarf underlings whose needs and wants you have to keep a close eye on. That's basically A Game of Dwarves, a strategy game where you explore underground worlds while managing your team of workers to ensure you don't work them to death.

Why does Impire look EXACTLY like Dungeon Keeper? Can they not make their own game?

@scanrange Looks WAY better then Dungeon Keeper. Comparing the two would be like saying "Why did they make Planetside 2, it's just a remake of Planetside 1!"

don't get war of roses.. just go get mount and blade warband, it's way better. when you fight people they actually take damage. in WoR, you do "numbered" damage and little numbers come bouncing out of people's bodies like it's WoW. In MB Warband and the expansions there's actually gore and blood everywhere. WoR is made by people who made mount and blade but it's just an imitation. don't give your money to an imitation. play Mount and Blade Warband and wait for Mount and Blade 2.

 @Entropy730

Mount and Blade is single player, this is multiplayer.

This game looks too chaotic.  Hopefully it's not just one for me and all for me. There is a reason these medieval guys lined up to  fight.  If one side lines up all their players and fights together they should be able to trounce another side that doesn't.  If that's not an effective tactic then this is totally unrealistic.  How many simultaneous players are supported?

@ggregd mount and blade is multiplayer. The ORIGINAL was single player, there has been 2 sequels since then. Get with the times.

War of Roses looks sick! If it is balanced, has some variety of maps and gamemodes and a reasonable price tag, I will totally buy it.

George R.R. Martin drew inspiration from War of the Roses in writing the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

I like dthe Impire game looks very well thought out with the menus and looks easy to navigate. which would be great for the game play. Hope the game play is as great. Looking forward to seeing more of it.

War of the Roses reminds me of Mount and Blade and Impire reminds me of evil genius with a overlord mix lol

War of the Roses looks like the exact kind of game that I like, but the combat looks bad, too bad.

ninn1000
ninn1000

@Armyboy5 Charles is right man, you really need to check out Mount and Blade. The combat is amazingly addictive, it's not nearly as fun to watch as it is to play.. The graphics are sub-par but the game is one of kind, it's like a Medieval simulation, it's almost as much strategy in building your army as it is RPG in controlling, upgrading, and fighting. War of Roses actually doesn't look that good to me, it looks exactly like LOTR: Conquest. M&B wasn't necessarily good because of it's combat system, it was the entirety of the game's uniqueness that made it so fun. Just using the battle system from one of their games and inputting the gameplay of the Battlefield series sounds like a bad idea, it'll just thin out what made the combat in M&B so fun.

@Armyboy5 agree. the animations ruin the game. also while i like the idea that u block each attack by it's direction, i think there are much better ideas to make directional attacks rather than drag the mouse to the sides. it's really cumbersome and unnecessary.

@Armyboy5 The same combat of Mount & Blade, is good, the guy who play demos that suckas, and make the combat system look weak, but is really good, see Mount & Blade Warband Review

I wish the company all the success with these games, but my interest lies in all their strategy games: Crusader Kings, Victoria, EU, HoI, etc. Unparalleled games in the genre.

@Henrique2324 Total War games are good, but they're "strategy lite" games. They look better than they are deep, so they get boring after a while.

@mlcarter815 Those are not RTS! Are grandstrategy, a whole different genre. And yup, parados GS games are saving the strategy genre. Civilization too, sometimes.

@adrianomar Wait wait wait first off what difficulty are you playing and what game did you play cause i can play that game for hours. The detail and depth of those game outshines many strategy game barring of course certain 4x space games and a few others

@Henrique2324 they are good but dont keep me busy for too long. I wish Generals 2 would come out already~
