Danny hunts down enemies unknown in Escape From Mount Stupid's history of the X-COM series.
The original UFO: Enemy Unknown is held in such high regard that it's easy to forget the series' tumultuous history. This is a franchise that has swapped hands around half a dozen times. A series with several canned sequels--and dodgy spin-off--that could have easily been left forgotten in gaming history.
When Take Two picked up the IP in 2005, the response from fans around the world was incredible. The passion for the classic games--combined with the growing apathy towards first person shooters--had fans demanding a turn-based reincarnation of the series. What they didn't know, was that a team was already hard at work creating that game; XCOM: Enemy Unknown will finally be released next week.
Whether you're a fan from the good old days, or a new gamer wondering what all the fuss is about, I hope this brief history of the games and the people behind them reminds you of just how lucky we are that a new XCOM game was ever even made.
NOTE: At 8:14 we incorrectly showed footage of the open-source XCOM inspired game 'UFO: Alien Invasion' when referring to the Hasbro title 'X-Com: First Alien Invasion'. We apologise for the error. For more information, or to download and play UFO Alien Invasion, please visit www.ufoai.org.

loved Ufo Enemy Unknown. as soon as I finished the last mission on Mars I started the game again and kept playing. highly addictive! one of my all time favs. ;)
Awesome show as always Danny and as someone mentioned below can you do an episode about blood omen and soul reaver games that would be awesome !
Even with Firaxis I am worried it just won't live up to my memories of the original games which I loved.
I miss turn based games and have never played these games, now I'm genuinely interested in playing XCOM enemy unknown, great show Danny
Played Ufo Defense when it first came out. It is my favorite computer game of all time, I could lose 8 or 9 hours at a time in that game. I really liked this piece Danny. You answered many questions I have always had about why it has taken so many years for something like Enemy Unknown to come out. Well done.
Have to say man, most of the videos that involving gamespot staff, well suck... Gamers need a face they can trust and gamespot needs it desperately.
You are it... hope others see that as well...
Every place needs that one guy that one gamer guy...
I loved the episode, its always interesting to see other game series that i haven't played before
Next Week - Resident Evil Yay!!!! Cant wait!!!
Some pretty weak arguments against my original post about how the new game is dumbed down compared to apocalypse.
I won't bother with the many reasons, except to say that when you start a game in the original ufo or apocalypse, you just see the geoscape/cityscape, and the ufos start coming. You learn about cover/tactics not through a tutorial, but on the corpses of your first few squads.
Anyway, I'm not a hater. A dumbed down xcom is still better than 99% of other games out there. And its introducing a new generation to the style of game. We're on the same team.
@KidRockNZ Not dumbed down, improved. Got rid of annoying excess stuff the original game's creators were too short-sighted to predict. Glad I could clear that up for you
@KidRockNZ ...sigh... See, back in the day there were these things called manuals... and this game had a pretty good one... it even had a 20 page tutorial section in it that walked you thru all the systems and held your hand all dumbed down like.
I don't know any of these games,But I love the show,Danny could make a game about something as boring as haggis sound fun.Keep up the good work Thanks.
I tried out the X-COM Enemy Unknown demo on Steam last night, and I was very impressed. It was pretty fun. I'm looking forward to trying out the full game out very soon.
Althoug ugly, x-com apocalypse is the best game I ever played!
I don't really think this new release will be better, but will be awesome anyway.
I think there was also a X-COM PBEM (play by e-mail).
And anotehr version of laser squad was done around 2000 i guess.
Firaxis hasn't done itself any favors releasing its XCOM demo on Steam because it has to rank as one of the shortest, most tight-fisted, no effort-spent demos ever. We can only hope the time not spent creating a decent demo has been spent making the full game even more awesome.
First time i've actually watched one of these video's form this video series, and actually they are pretty good. I might even give XCOM: Enemy Unknown a try, as i've always been a fan of strategy games.
P.S.I liked the jab at IGN there...good job >_>
My favorite X-Com is Apocalypse. Its probably the worst looking game I've ever played, but the mechanics were solid. I replayed it just months ago, cant wait for the new Firaxis version.
@TERMINATOR-SSD There is a Legacy of Kain - Soulreaver reboot in progress read ===> http://www.gamespot.com/news/crystal-dynamics-rebooting-soul-reaver-report-6367143
I find games that allow my squad to die forever emotionally scaring. Not in a bad way... I remember years ago playing a Fire Emblem and making it to the very end where I had to sacrifice a squad mate to win... They live forever in my memory.
Good stuff but it might have been more interesting to talk about the ealier roots of the series: Chaos, Rebelstar Raiders and Rebelstar as these give a true picture of the origins of the Julian Gollop's turn-based style rather than spending time on those crappy later games. Especially Rebelstar, which is an amazing game. Just a thought, other than that, a great video.
I really like "Escape from Mount Stupid" ...... and this XCOM... whoa... you dont know how long i've waited for this game...
Remember "jus aboutt" UFO: Enemy Unknown but i think i was too busy playing Command & Conquer and painting warhammer :) Love the IGN diss to, i can not see how they gave RE6 7.9 is laughable the demo was total pony!!
Thanks for an informative and interesting vid. I've never played an X-Com game and probably never will. But these vids are great fun. Looking forward to Res Evil. So much material to work with, you'll be spoiled for choice!
I remember when I got a demo disc from a jumble sale (yard sale for you yanks) with something stupid like 101 PC demos on.. Straight away UFO: Enemy Unknown got my attention because it had the word UFO in.. I was 7 :P
But yeah.. bit too young to appreciate it really. The gameplay SERIOUSLY confused me as it was all turn-based, and the movement points thing just got me completely lost.. To be fair though I didn't have a clue what I was even doing.
Either way this video of Danny's is a good one! Fills in the missing gaps of my childhood. I've been watching the XCOM teasers for a while now and will likely pick it up.
If you want a bit of a nostalgia trip Joystiq did up a "then and now" video montage of all the icon features of X-COM like the Geoscape and you can see the differences the new version has. http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/13/video-from-x-com-to-xcom/ Quick video too, only 4 minutes long.
@picho86 Firaxis is the developer, probably the best strategy game developer in the business. 2K just handle the Publishing, like advertising, distribution and stuff. Same for Gearbox and Borderlands 2.
@Joeguy00 I know... I used the wrong wording. I was talking about Take 2 not having a part in the franchise AFAIK.
@Joeguy00 That makes sense :)
@picho86 After using the power of Google (which I will hence forth take all credit for) they are indeed the same company. 2KGames is actually part of Take-Two. They own Rockstar and 2KGames, so that means they make Grand Theft Auto and everything. Heavy hitters.
@Joeguy00 After a tiny bit of research I'm even more confused. In an IGN article about the shooter, at first they wrote Take-two, but later they wrote 2K Games. Are they the same? Is everyone wrong? Am I going crazy?:)
@picho86 Oh okay, they use to be part of the development team did they?
The first game was amazing. I don't know why I didn't play the second but oh, well, I think I'll try out enemy unknown
Loved the first game! Never played the sequels, but the new one looks awsome. I like that its coming out for consoles also because its just more fun if you are sitting at a friends house and just seeing the game on tv! And for a fodnote i so enjoy all most all games from Sid and his team! Civ Rev was an awsome game, even if you didnt play yourself but only watched!
@Sprock26 The fact i'ts even on console is not good, totally ruined the game. All interfaces are made to support that awful gamepad..... so no more x-com on this one. I think they'd better use a differnet title because this is not X-com ... this is something different. And costs too much for what this game is offering...
@virus10101 Well just dont play it if you dont like it. Iam not going to go into a big debate about which platform is the best. I like the console as i said because its just more social. I think its about time the dev started making more strategy games for consoles!
@Joeguy00 i'm going to see ... if i like that 1 i'd really that will happen.
But for now i think it will be very very hard.
@virus10101 Yeah PM me over GameSpot what you think about, it is always good to hear both sides and I'd like to know if you ended up liking it.
@Joeguy00 cool tonight i'll order ! Then once played we may argue better :D and fight again !!!
I actually bought XCOM: EU for ?33 from GameStop a little while ago, you can order it cheap online or from the store and see whether you are right or not. Its the simplest way and at least you'll have tried it then and will have a stronger understanding of the mechanics. - I'll give a link. (Sorry if there is a cheaper place) http://www.gamestop.ie/PC/Games/12169/xcom-enemy-unknown?previousUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamestop.ie%2FSearchResult%2FQuickSearch%3Fq%3DXCOM%20Enemy%20Unknown
@Sprock26 as i told to another guy i have enough experience on gaming to say that. I said (after the foirst beta that swtor and tws would have failed => i was right, and tons of other circumstances). I always see comments like your and about fan.boys trying to say the game is great and so when it is not, and time always give me reason. This time wont be different.
Today's fps may be bot not older games where no one was telling you what to do, now you have markers everywhere you do not even need to bother to look around because the game does most of the objective tracking. But this is an off topic argument. so go back to the topic.
Game mechanics can be clearly seen from the demo and the videos, and that's all we should need to evaulate a title.
I think that this game is worth nothing more than 35 ?, i wont pay a full price for this one. As i ask onyone, i ask you too : will you pay 1000000 ? for a Fiat Panda?
GW2 is a game that is worth the tripa A and the full price but not most of the today's games.
I will play this game, for sure, but only when it's price will be right. Full price for this title is a theft.
@virus10101 How can you say that this game will suck before youve played it. Yeah maybe you tried the demo from Steam, but thats just some of the gameplay. Conserning you statement that you cant develop a good rts... Now ive only played Civ5 a little bit, but how many buttons did you really need to play that - a mouse? And you are definitely in titled to your opinion that these types of games are only for mind-less people. But for me most fps are for mind-less people so thats just your opinion!
