@LeFeverBeaver Products attempting to save electricity are not a joke. The world keeps turning, and 10 years down the line that 30k fuel efficient car will have saved you more than that amount in gasoline, and will have released substantially less carbon emissions. While it may seem negative immediately, as time goes on the situation is not so.
OK, so buying the new Xbox 360 and throwing my old-undecomposable-piece-of-plastic-and-other-stuff one in the trash is more "environmental friendly"? I'd rather save the environment by reducing the amount of waste coming out of my house, try another one microsoft!
Want to know how the Ultimate Way to REALLY SAVE MONEY Regardless of What Consoles you own? simply..Unplug your consoles and "Play Outside." You'll get fit too.
@linkloot98: This is very insightful. This is one of the main reasons why hybrid cars and such are such a joke at this point, as well as any sort of recycling (other than reducing and reusing). Nobody considers the manufacturing, transportation, upkeep, carbon emissions, and other such environmental impact and 'overhead.' "Man! gas is getting expensive! I'm going to go out and spend $30k on a new car that won't use as much gas." hahaha

@ linkoot98 Yea this is hardly green gaming, the only "green" here is the money MS is giving Gamespot to have this page linked from their front page so they can promote the slim even more and make more mula.
How is this green gaming? Is electricity the only resource we use? There is no mention of how the old and new products are made - where they were made - how far they had to be transported. This is a very surface level of "what is green." Gamespot, I appreciate the effort and infographic, but please go a little deeper next time.
better to just unplug whichever version you have and to the fool earlier in the thread who downplayed global warming- I have taken the masters level environmental and organic chemistry classes necessary to assure you that science behind climate change is very well established. have you? maybe it would be better if they packaged science more like religion, i.e a wise bearded old man holds a stone tablet that says if you use fossil fuels you will be condemned to a hell of floods, earthquakes, and war. The ignorant always respond better to fear.
Hm, well maybe my power bill will be going down soon because my third 360 is about to crap out on me and I'll have to purchase one of those sexy slims. I want the one with the 250GB HDD, I think it's only $299.99 and Walmart and since my GF works there we get 10% off so it shouldn't be too bad. The sad thing is though that this will be my fourth Xbox 360. For some reason my disc drives always screw up and stop reading discs all together. I tried installing all my games to HDD so the thing didn't have to spin while I played games but that didn't work, just extended the life a little bit. I hope I have more luck with the slim.
Too bad all the power consumption numbers are wrong. Kind of negates the whole thing. Maybe yall should get a multi-meter and actually test the systems rather than going with the generic specs in the manual. Just a thought.
I dont get how your xbox uses power just chillin there but okay..and how different is the elite from launch?
Umm, power consumption is only one portion of environmental responsibility. Notably this doesn't discuss at all the toxic materials, the toxic waste used in its production especially of components made overseas which do not have any real environmental protection laws, and whether any part of the hardware has any materials or components produced in Laogai forced unpaid labor camps in China.
So a 360 slim will pay for itself in 40 some years is what they're saying? And I thought people who bought a hybrid to save money on gas were idiots..
Reson to buy a new one. 1. Last one broke 2. There are not any more Not spending more to buy something i have. And works fine.
I don't know how accurate that is since I have a 700 watt computer and the power draw from it isn't as high or as expensive as what they are saying the 360 is.
what about the power drain that the xbox's power box uses? and does it take as much to run hd installed games, cds,and movies as it does hd disc based games?
@..... well practically everyone I think a lot of you are taking this a bit to seriously. Microsoft (and Sony as well if you look at the power draw differences between the PS3 and PS3 Slim) implemented these power draw changes as one of many improvements on the system. "Pay $400 save, $12 a year" (Quote from @soo_boredd corrected for troll spelling) was not their advertising campaign. It was something more along the lines of "Pay $400, get: a larger hard drive, faster native wireless, USB 3.0, additional USB ports, slimmer, more efficient design, touch buttons, several other features, oh AND you'll save $12 a year on power." This is one minor improvement on a list of many. Of course, you can keep complaining how stupid it is, and maybe next time they make a console modification, they will leave the power draw the same so you can all feel "Equal"
Microsoft should let everyone with a Launch Model 360 traded it in for a free Xbox 360 Slim and say it's a move towards going green. That would give them tons of good publicity and give us gamers with Launch Model 360's a Slim 360. And dev's would no longer have to worry about implementing features in there games that require a Harddrive and splitting there audience because they could be asured everyone has a Slim 360 and therefore a Harddrive (unless MS opted to give everyone 4GB Slim 360's)
Great now they just need to paint xbox green and make the start up a growing tree then they will have all the energy hippies
Most of you have fallen into the government propaganda of "global harming " which they are using to gain more control over you and keep stealing more money from you to feed their B.S. political adgenda !!!
I don't care what the articles says, I have a Dark Knight Xbox 360 and I'm not getting rid of it.
So half of it is what companies say they charge, the other half is measured by the government. Wonder it won't necessarily be making sense. And to the guys talking about global warming, science is supposed to be used to measure what's happening. To create a comparison point of what's happening and comparing it to what we want. I figure, right now we humans are mostly using all of what's right there, just digging in and feasting. Well, once you've eaten it all, you better have something to else to eat or a plan to get it back. Right now we won't be able to replace fossil fuels like petrol and natural gas. Oups, digression. I just figure, we're doing to the atmosphere with these what a smoker does to his lungs. A smoker can very well live up to 90 years. But there's a lot more chances to get, say, lung cancer. The atmosphere's pretty big, and we've going at an exponential rate for the last 400 years. I smoke, and I don't care if I live old. Just logic.
If they really cared they wouldn't produce the same damn thing twice and promote it as environmentally friendly. Those Energy Star products are just a scam, want to help the environment don't litter and recycle. Personally I don't understand the logic in this, isn't it the power-plant that is causing the Co2 from Coal burning or whatever the power-plant is? Nothing is going to change how much energy we use, we have to change the source so until we discover how to harness Fusion or make solar power more efficient were stuck.
so, basically the rig is the same, no upgrades to hardware, no better performance, no nothing, no bluray or something else to make it worth paying AGAIN to be able to play the same games you already own and play ? and i'm like meh ... stop driving cars, stop breeding, the planet will thank you more
@assassins27333 Moore's law and the price of components means this will not change. Apple do it every year to customers and have been their entire existence, The cost of things goes down and they can make better versions to draw in new customers, compete with other companies in the same field and, often frustratingly, add new features the old versions may not have such as N-based wireless, etc. It sucks but it means we get a larger audience to play with by them attracting new customers and it also gives us new options later down the road. The Xbox360 is 6 years old; tons of stuff has changed in technology for the better since then. You think they should still charge 300+ dollars for a loud ass, power brick having monster the original was? They could never compete. I dn't mind as long as it means the games get better and the audience gets bigger.
i really dislike upgrades of consoles brought after the launch of the core versions it seems petty and is thievery why not one universal model of 360 and ps3
I'm getting a slim because i have the 12gb hard drive. It's like 120 bucks for a 250gb HD. I get a discount at target so the 250gb slim is about $240, so what's an extra $100 to get the new xbox?
