I've started playing Ultimate Team online and it forces you to use Tactical Defending which is terrible. I much prefer Legacy but I can't use it so does anyone have any tips when using Tactical Defending?

Try and run into the player with the ball, nick the ball off him don't try to formally challenge him.
Another tip is to not try to make any tackles until the player is within 30 yards of the goal, especially down the flanks. Outside of 30 yards get your players into position for possible interception, marking opposition without the ball.
Make sliding challenges on the flanks, at all costs avoid crosses coming in at all costs! If you concede a free kick so be it.
Use professional fouls to your advantage, stop breaks, but be careful! Dont pick up reds! (be careful tackling from behind)
Use subs! Player reactions suffer with lower stamina. Sub your centre mids.
Shift to 5-4-1 if you are protecting a lead in the last 10 mins! Press start, pause the game, take a breather, set up formation, keep possession.
Also push your players up, USE the offside trap, you dont have to use it to get offsides, press it as soon as the opponent gets the ball. So to use the offside trap double tap the up directional button.
Press square to clear, NEVER the X button (exercise caution when using the O button, only use it when you can charge it up, typically two seconds real time)!!
Play possession, keep 60% of the ball, your win ratio will improve dramatically. When you are in the lead, keep 80% possession.
Basically theres nothing in tactical defending in itself which helps you win but more strategy. The best players aren't technically that amazing, but strategically very good!!
See if that helps.

A lot of people only know to play simple one twos so when you lose possession you should (almost) always take control of a defensive midfielder and put him right in between your opponents strikers. Just try to intercept the pass, no need to tackle. Do this and you'll shut down about 50% of of you opponents.
Use subs! Player reactions suffer with lower stamina. Sub your centre mids.
IMO this isn't necessary in UT because stamina goes down a bit slower than in other modes and I also really hate wasting contracts. Just don't start players with under 90 stamina and you'll be fine. The only time I would make a sub is if you end up in extra time in a tournament. Since most peoples strategies is to have fast strikers and try to outrun your defense, you might want to bring in fresh fullbacks.
Play possession, keep 60% of the ball, your win ratio will improve dramatically. When you are in the lead, keep 80% possession.
Note your fullbacks offensive work rates if you want to play possession football. Do not play possession if they both have high offensive work rates because this will leave you very vulnerable to the counter attack.
