I'm pretty sure that this works just like the original game did in where you can't use certain levels of magic until your normal level is higher. For example: At level 1 you can't just go out and by level 8 magic and pwn the entire game with it.
So as your normal level grows your magic level will grow! -
Your magic level is just the level number of the highest spell you've purchased.

You really don't have a magic level. In the original game, depending on your level you could cast a certain number of level one spells, a certain number of level two spells, and so on before resting at an inn. This remake uses the MP system, so as long as you have enough MP you can cast a spell. No matter the spell's level.
