Crysis - Where is The Gameplay?! Where is....The...Innovation??!!11
- Nov 12, 2006 11:26 pm GMTWhile many of you Gamespot posters have been awed by the stunning graphics of Crysis, the gameplay is just as impressive.
The player will get to experience many unique environments encompassing all weather conditions. You begin in the jungle (seen in many gameplay videos from E3) where you fight the North Koreans for control over the Island. As you progress closer towards the alien ship, you start to enter the sphere where the temperature rapidly plummets and the environment goes through a radical change.
Once in the sphere, the player is then faced with a very hostile alien enemy (in battle armour). It is only due to your nanoarmor that survival in such freezing conditions is possible. At this stage, both the North Koreans and Americans concur that the only possible way to defeat the alien enemy is to combine forces. The final stage of the game is set within the alien spaceship where you combat the aliens in their natural form. This stage is set in a zero gravity environment; it said that the animations of this very confidential stage were easily comparable with the likes of Shrek or The Incredibles.
Others gameplay features include:
Emergent Consequential Gameplay
Perhaps most of impressive of all is the emergent consequential gameplay. Generally most games are scripted to point that the experience is the same no matter how differently your game style is. Crysis is different in that it will offer the player a unique experience every time the game is played. Your actions earlier on in the game will ultimately affect what happens in the future and how things pan out.

Nano Muscle Suit
The Nano Muscle suit has come along way from shooters where you could only collect armour in order to be better protected against the enemy. The Nano Muscle Suit in Crysis will not only support armour but also strength and speed. You'll be given a certain level of energy and then it's up to you how you use it. For example in scenes where you need to escape quickly from hostility, more energy could be allocated to speed - thus enabling you to escape faster - however this makes your armour and strength more susceptible.
The suit will also offer you great protection against the alien enemy - especially against the Molecular Arrestor weapon. You'll be able to essentially defrost yourself rapidly if you have enough power. Also, as aliens can only see through thermal vision, the suit will enable you to drop your temperature down so that you become invisible to the alien eye. The length of which you can do this again depends on the level of power your suit has.
If the enemy attacks become too much to handle, the suit is equipped with a final resort emergency feature. Activating this feature will send out a small shockwave, paralyzing any enemies within a 50m radius.
You'll be unlikely to make it through Crysis if you don't use this suit properly, it's not like other shooters - you have to think.

Destructible Environments
Everything you see in your environment can affect the gameplay in someway. Almost everything can be destroyed including vegetation, buildings and vehicles. Even enemy fire will destroy the vegetation around you - so don't think you can take shelter behind a tree. Throwing a grenade will clear the foliage enabling you to view your enemy hiding.
As you may have seen in the first official tech demo, dynamic lighting is another amazing feature of the new Cry Engine and of course this will be incorporated into the game. Time will not stop in Crysis. You'll be fighting day and night - regardless of your environment.

(Only Direct X 10 screen in this thread.)
Hostile environments made worse
Just as you begin to think your environment could not get any worse with freezing conditions and a very difficult alien enemy, a natural disaster will strike wreaking even more havoc. The alien sphere has modified the area on a global scale causing tsunamis, torrential rainfall, earthquakes, waterspouts and tornadoes. Again, it's only through effective use of the Nano Muscle suit that you'll survive.

The AI has been completely re-written from FarCry so expect to experience the most advanced AI ever - and not just against other soldiers. The aliens - including the "Hunter" will all have advanced AI behind them. One advanced feature of the new AI is the enemy's ability to work more productively as a team in order to destroy you.

Character Technology
The characters of a game can be a very large factor in determining the level of immersion. You simply need good characters to support a good story or else the level of enjoyment greatly diminishes. When I talk about characters, I'm referring to the personality, appearance and behavior of the various characters within a game.
Appearance
The appearance of characters in Crysis will be far superior to any other game currently available. The amazing models, textures and animations will be all possible due Crytek's creative team of programmers and artists. By looking at the image below, you can see how life like the characters appear.
Every character in Crysis is unique. Meaning you'll never see two people that look identical. On top of that, there will be a lot of unique clothing which will enhance that sense of uniqueness.

Personalities
Personality will be a lot easier to detect and portray for many reasons. In past games, personality was almost nonexistent due to the terribly fake animations and lack of facial expressions. Of course, personality also depends on great sound.
CryEngine2 supports animation blending and allows the animators to produce more complex and detailed animations. Facial movements and expression will look extremely accurate and will sync with characters voices perfectly.
Behavior
Behavior of a character generally reflects their personality and their realism. Like explained above, due to the extraordinary character appearance and animations in Crysis, behavior will greatly enhance the experience. In the past, animations use to be slow, stiff and unnatural. This was mainly because of the limited hardware power, but software was also a large hindrance (such as DirectX)
The AI in Crysis is unmatched, and the game supports 100's of unique character animations and behaviours. If you were to watch an AI character from a distance, you'll notice them perform tasks such as talking to other characters, smoking, scratching, patrolling and many more things which you'd expect.
The Multiplayer
Many feel that FarCry was a major let down with the multiplayer component. Buggy code, lack of uniqueness and cheating were just some of the concerns many players had. However Crytek has a brand new game in development titled “Crysis” (releasing early next year) with a multiplayer component that promises to be something better than we’ve ever seen before.
There will be 6-8 official maps and support for up to 32 players. The net code has been completely rebuilt from scratch.

There are to be four game modes in total:
1) Tactical Deathmatch 2) Tactical Team Deathmatch 3) Tactical Capture the flag 4) Power Struggle
While the DM/CTF modes are somewhat standard, the Power Struggle mode is perhaps one of the most distinctive mode’s seen in a FPS to date.
Crysis Power Struggle
Crysis Power Struggle has taken many of the current irritations in existing popular FPS multiplayers and effectively disentangled them in a very notable gameplay mode titled “Power Struggle”.
In Power Struggle you’ll start the game as a primitive grunt – either US or Korean. You’ll be given just the very basics including basic armor and a pistol. As you make kills and achieve other goals (like securing capture points), you’ll earn credits which can be used to obtain bigger and better things. Your headquarters will be armed with automated missiles and turrets – effectively eliminating base campers altogether. Your headquarters may be an offshore submarine or inland base.
You’ll have access to two types of suits
1) The Prototype suit – You’ll have this at the beginning. This will give you very basic armour and strength capabilities 2) The Production Nano suit – You’ll have access to this once you’ve got enough credits. This will enable more advance armour and strength and also allow some degree of cloaking. This will require a high level of credits to obtain.
Crysis multiplayer will provide a raft of different vehicles and machines including: (but not limited to)
Water based
- Patrol Boats - Inflatable zodiacs - Whalers - Hovercrafts - Submarines - Ships
Land based
- Trucks - Jeeps - Armored personnel carriers - Mobile AA units - Tanks - Hovercrafts
Air
- Attack Helicopters - VTOL Jets

Such vehicles and machines just don’t just spawn – your side will have to take control of certain capture zones in order to be able to manufacture them. The capture zones won’t be just markers on a map – rather they will be factories, ports, motorworks etc. (*Reminds you of Command & Conquer Renegade, doesn't it?*) For example capturing a port will enable the production of water based vehicles. Capturing a zone will involve simply standing in a specific room for a small amount of time. You’ll gain credits for this also.
Once your team captures a zone, it doesn’t just start manufacturing the goods. It provides the means to manufacturer but you first must of all order your desired machine or vehicle through your PDA and have a certain number of credits available. Your PDA will provide you with a key code so that no one else can take what you’ve ordered. You will have the opportunity to give your order to another team member, also.
While you can have multiple vehicles/machines you can only manage one at a time. The others can be locked in a somewhat secure area. They won’t be completely safe though as the enemy can pick your locks and steal your equipment. Also, if for any reason you leave your vehicle and the enemy is snooping around they can jump in and claim it as theirs.
Throughout the game your rank will change as you gain more credits. The higher rank you have the more toys (*Imagine gaining acces to the Hunter *) you’ll have access to.
Getting the right balance is perhaps the most pertinent issue. While new players may think it’s grossly unfair that all they will have is a single pistol to compete with other players with some serious firepower it won’t quite be like this. Firstly new players will be able to steal others machines/vehicles. Secondly, those players with higher ranks won’t be after the new players as they will have very little to gain from killing them and more so be jeopardizing their entire team. Players with high ranks will get the greatest benefit from killing opponents with a higher rank level. Based on this it’s likely that you’ll be fighting others with a similar rank.
Crysis Multiplayer brings a whole new level of realism. If your aircraft runs out of bombs, you won’t be able to simply fly over the runway to reload. You’ll have to land and retrieve them yourself. If you tank gets damaged you’ll have to use a welders touch to patch it up.
Perhaps the most stirring part of Crysis Multiplayer is the alien aspect that will be incorporated. Each map will have one to five alien crash sites that will be in randomly generated areas. After infiltrating one of these you’ll have to locate the alien core. Bringing this back to one of your capture zones will allow you to reverse engineer the alien technology for use in existing human technology. For example you’ll able to convert a standard tank into a Molecular Accelerator tank that fires deadly ice pieces. It won’t be at all easy to bring the core to a captured point. Once you’ve got the core, every player – both allied and opponent will know you’ve got it and will probably be after you. Therefore you’re going to need good teamwork (*Something that every shooter lacks; or doesn't affectively incorporate it well*) to fend off any threat and protect you.
As you gain more alien cores and take them to each capture point, your team will gradually take control of the game. Winning the game will be achieved once the opponent HQ is destroyed. The only way to do this is to driving attack with the alien technology arsenal.
One more unique factor is the time of each game. A game could last as long as ten hours. Keyword: Could. Also every two hours of gameplay (both in the single player mode and multiplayer mode) are equal to one Crysis day. With the dynamic day/night cycles you’re going to playing on the same map both during the day and under the stars.

The Weapons of Crysis
FN Scar
The Scar is your main weapon using full size 7.62x51mm ammo. It has different configurations and is moddable to act like a sniper rifle or even a sub-machine gun. In real life this gun can be modified on the fly to use 7.62x39 M43 ammo. The magazine capacity of this gun varies depending on what ammo is being used. With 7.62x51mm the standard mag will hold 20 shots, and with 7.62x39 M43 ammo 30 shots. The rate of fire on this gun is 600 rpm. The range and accuracy of this gun is unknown
XM102
This shoulder mounted rocket launcher is able to take down tanks, helicopters and vehicles. It features next generation targeting features.
XM2014
This standard shotgun can be modded to include a reflex sight, targeting laser or tactical flashlight.
MPXA
This is a short-range submachine gun. Again modable to include a laser targeting system, reflex sight, flashlight and silencer.
EM70
This long-range electromagnetic rifle fires metal slugs at 8 times the speed of sound.
The Minigun
Heavy, like a mini Avenger cannon, can only be used if you have a minimum level of power in your suit. It uses 7.62x51 ammo. Its rate of fire can be 6000 rpm up to 10,000.
Hand held gatling gun
Rather heavy gun – like the minigun, this gun can only be used if you have a minimum level of power in your suit
Grenades
These will be essential in clearing vegetation where the enemy will be hiding - unlike in every shooter where it is just whored all over the map; pathetic noobs.
Rocket Launcher
Very little is know about this weapon presently, however it has been confirmed the you will have access to the Rocket Launcher from the time when you first have contact with the alien enemy.
Most weapons are customizable – even the bullets will be customizable.

Alien Weapons
Molecular Accelerator
This weapon never runs out of ammo – rather it takes the humidity from the air, freezes it and shoots, at a rapid pace, extremely sharp and dangerous ice nails.

Molecular Arrestor
This is perhaps the most anticipated and impressive weapon in Crysis. The Molecular Arrestor will fire a beam freezing almost any object. The frozen object can then fired upon and shattered. The only protection against the molecular arrestor is the Nano Muscle Suit – provided enough power is available.
You can see this weapon in action in either my signature, or the E3 Microsoft Press Conference from this year's E3.
Singularity Cannon
This canon creates a small black hole (and large explosion) with an extremely high gravitational pull – sucking almost anything of a certain size into it. There is presently no media for this weapon.
I hope that this clears things up here at Sytem Wars (and Gamespot in general), because every other forum that I have been to is in no doubt that this game will deliver - alot.

Interesting Facts:
The nano-suit has threee different modes:
1.) Strength & armour - When in strength mode, the suit will glow red.
2.) Speed - you will see a cool blur effect when you run real fast.
Classes: Crysis will support a new class system which will be more customizable and which will allow players freedom of choice. You'll be able to mix and match weapons and abilties so you can play how you want. For example, some may want to be a medic and a sniper while others would like to be an engineew while using a rocket launcher.
Componant Damage: Tanks and Jets will no longer rule the battlefield thanks to Crysis and it's component damage system. In past games, vehicles would simply have "health" style meters which when empty, would cause the vehicle to explode. Crysis avoids this by taking a more complex but realistic approach. Let's take a helicopter for example, shooting it's back rotor will send it into a violent spin and will most likely cause it to crash into the ground. However, like in real-life, helicopters don't always explode when they crash, it depends on how it crashes and where it crashes. This all new component damage system will make it more realistic and a lot more fun. It also gives users a second chance as they won't automatically die when they crash- Please wait. I already agree. Even if it didn't have some amazing gameplay thing. I'd still be excited, because although I like original fresh stuff, i'm not exactly bored with current stuff.
