Im looking to buy a laptop to replace my desktop.  However im big into console games but when i get a laptop i would like to play some computer games.  I wont be a hardcore computer gamer.  So could i use a core 2 duo with 1.7 ghz and 2 gigs of ram.  Or should i get the 2.0 ghz.  Would i even notice a difference.  Im looking at some hp's at circuit city and the one is $1300 with 200 gig hd, 1.7 ghz and 2 gigs of ram.  However the 2 ghz processor  has 4mb/L2 cache instead of 2mb/L2 cache and is around $2100 with everything else similar.  Both  come with a 256 mb Geforce Go 7600.  Hopefully someone can help me with my decision.

is your need for a laptop a must? otherwise i would suggest building a desktop which would save you money.

if you need the laptop for certain reasons i would stick with the 4mb l2 cache. it will more than likely play anything out right now. as for future games it is uncertain
    -Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    -W. Digital 250GB Sata 16mb
    -Asus P5B-E
    -2GB(1gb x 2) G. Skill Ram
    -Antec 900 case
-XFX 7600GT (waiting for Geforce 8600)
    -Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
    -Logitech X530
    -Windows XP SP2

You could game on a dual core @ 1.7 Ghz, 2GB RAM and a go 7600.  The 2Ghz will see a slight improvement and the cache would help, but given how much extra it costs, it isn't worth it for the minimal performance gain.  I think you should be fine gaming on the cheaper model laptop.

    i5 2500k - 4Ghz | AsRock Extreme4 Gen3 Mobo | 8GB Kingston HyperX PC-12800 |
    2x 6970 XFire | Samsung S27A950 LED Monitor |

You should spec out the e1705 from Dell with a Go 7900 GS. You should land around the $1800 mark with a coupon.
