Just saw The Hunger Games. Sorry I saw this thread after I put together a small review you may find on the Roll Call thread.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.
Has anyone here seen "The Raid"? I'm going to see it tonight but 50/50 on whether it's the right movie to see or not :)
I went and saw The Raid today. Excellent fight choreography, almost non-existant plot. If you go in simply for the action you shouldn't be disappointed.
This thread is a mine of information, but you have to actually read the posts!
Here's David and Margaret's review.
Here's Roger Ebert's as well.
On Outer Limits, which I forgot to comment on before, it always seemed like a cheap Twilight Zone knock-off to me. I enjoyed a couple of episodes when I was younger, but it's just not the real thing. Bring back the Twilight Zone I say!

Why research in the thread when I can just post the question and you'll answer? :)
That's pretty bad isn't it? He only posted that a couple of pages back too :(
I'm sorry lads.
Anyway I'm going for the action and didn't really expect a plot so Locked's comment bodes well for me :)

Haha, don't worry, I do that all the time. Skimming through posts is sometimes necessary to save time.
Read Ebert's review though. It's always fun to see him skewer a movie. He even gets in a dig at videogames.
I love Roger. I'll be devastated when he dies. I don't always agree with him, but I'm addicted to his reviews.
D & M gave it a relatively positive review though, and they don't usually like plotless movies, so it might actually be alright.

Interesting, I don't like their reviews when watched but I quite enjoy the transcripts! :)
Well the tickets are booked no so I guess I'll know what it's like in about 9 hours time.

Oh, why not? I knid of grew up with them on SBS and now ABC, and consider them my favourite film critics along with Ebert. I find at least one of them is right 95% of the time. They've recommended so many films I didn't think I'd be interested in but ended up loving.
Margaret comes across as a bit overbearing sometimes and David's a bit conservative in his tastes, but I think they're fun to watch together. They have a funny kind of chemistry.

I think it's just not my thing. Then again I like ABC news so, obviously, I like my reporting to be as dry as humanly possible :)

Eh, I don't wanna beat this horse to death, but I don't really understand what you mean. They're film critics, not comedians. Their role is to review films as objectively and knowledgeably as possible and they do this very well (as their 20 uninterrupted years on TV attests to). Should they start cracking jokes or doing cartwheels to make it less 'dry'? Besides, how is it different to serious game reviewers? How is Kevin Van Ord any less 'dry' than those two?
I personally find them informative and, indeed, quite entertaining. It's fun to see them disagree, but that's hardly the point of the show.

No you got it back to front. I was saying that their banter and discussion make it less "dry". Perhaps dry isn't the right term. I'll explain myself better later on. There's nothing wrong with their format or the quality of their reviews, I just don't like the format of their show.

If it weren't for David and Margaret, I wouldn't be married to my wife. It's as simple as that. These guys are great. I've had the fortune of listening to David talk a few times and the man knows his stuff. He's a genius. Also, he was on the Director of the critics panels at both Cannes and Venice a couple of times. They really are living legends. I tend to agree with David a little bit more than Margaret, but part of what I like about Margaret is when she rates films like 2 Fast 2 Furious 4.5/5 - it's obvious it's not for the quality of the film but the enjoyment she got from it.
Streak - have you read any of Roger Ebert's books at all? He's one of the finest critical writers out there and alongside Pauline Kael (who can really top Kael anyhow?) he's one of the most enjoyable reviewers/critical analysts as well. That's what a lot of film reviewers forget - it's not hard to review a film, but to make the review enjoyable is another thing.

Margaret has a great laugh!

- Went and saw Shame today (discovered that Kino is just around the corner from my Uni, found my new arthouse cinema). Fantastic film, Fassbender gives an excellent performance. I'm keen to check out Steve McQueens other films.

I probably agree with David more too. He's always right... except when he's not. He gave Gran Torino 5 stars (wtf?), OldBoy 3 stars, Irreversible 2.5, Antichrist 2 stars. It's times like these that we need Margaret's more modern taste and hipness to set the record straight.
Haven't read any of Ebert's books, but I have him on facebook and usually enjoy his posts and blogs. I must admit he let me down badly when I found out he gave Blue Velvet 1 star*. Ever since then, I take his reviews with a pinch of salt, but damn, the man sure can write. Some of his reviews are a real pleasure to read (particularly the negative ones). Actually, by far the most insightful The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover review* came from him.
PS - Direct links to Ebert's reviews seem to be too much for GS to handle :(...

Anybody who sits on top of the largest hydrogen-oxygen fueled system in the world; knowing they're going to light the bottom- and doesn't get a little worried- does not fully understand the situation.
No love for Dark City?

Kiefer Sutherland ruined it (again) for me.
Can't stand him.

I love Dark City. It was my antidote to The Matrix mania back in the day.
Don't mind Kiefer Sutherland either, though Donald is better. Kiefer never made anything like Don't Look Now.

I like Donald in Invasion of the Body Snatchers best. That last scene is an absolute classic!
Jeff Goldblum is great too (as always).

David and Margaret are a real pleasure to watch. Their anniversary episode was all kinds of awesome. Should have put your story about your wife in for that. Anyway, I recently saw "The Way Back", which was a very... interesting film. From Peter Weir I expect excellence, and while the film was really rather good, and very real, it wasn't up to his normal par.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.
