    Yep - Sword of the Stars is can be played multi-player. It's got tons of depth, too. It doesn't let you customize your races or win via influence like in Gal Civ 2 but it does have far better tactical combat and the different methods of propulsion make the races play VERY differently.

    SotS 2 is out but they released it WAY too early. Stick with the original Sword of the Stars: Complete Edition for now but keep an eye on SotS 2. It should be pretty good in a few months.

    There's also Sins of a Solar Empire. That's more of a 4X/RTS hybrid, though.

    a cheap, great game is Neptune's Pride, u can join games freely but you need to pay to create games.

    but it's a game you play over months, not days. u better start it with a friend on a small map, than play with him against others.

    it's the slowest game ever, and it may incourage you to backstab your poor friends in real life, but it is just awesome.
