So much for them letting Microsoft go first.

I was initially skeptical after just seeing the teaser, but then when I heard about the meeting, it's pretty much confirmation it'll be a PS4 announcement.

Whilst I'm not excited for this I'll be keen to see what they come out with.

Part of me was hoping that Sony would pull a Julia Gillard and announce an announcement date like... Feb 20, 2014. Just to see what happens with Microsoft.

Anyhow. Bad joke aside. Can't wait. I somehow managed to get an agreement from my wife that I might get a PS3 when we're in America later this year. If there's a PS4 out in the New Year, that'd be even better.

I'm gonna agree with you on this, but I'll probably still buy one.

The next gen just seemslike  it will be rather underwhelming.

They might show the PS4 off but not give a date (they probably will do that at E3, like MS). But i expect the next Xbox will be out within 6 months before the PS4.

Wouldn't be surprised if they release the next XBox AT E3, like they did with the revamped 360.
Bit early to see the PS4, but alright.
    lol

Oh I'll still buy one I'm just not sure what it's gonna offer, besides exclusives, that I don't already have. Hopefully Sony will dump this "box for everything" route they're obsessed with and quit trying to push the multimedia/social aspects onto a gaming console. They're nice extras but shouldn't be the focus

    This.

Want it for exclusives only. Todays PC will be more powerful than the PS4.

If anything I'm sure they'll push the multimedia aspect even more than already. Console gaming is less profitable than it was a few years ago, so I can see them pushing the streaming of games, streaming of multimedia, and just really pushing all cloud based media. I don't think I'll ever buy a different console after the PS4 - I think the next generation will make me completely a Playstation fanboy.

I think the other thing that Sony and Microsoft will have to compete with is the Steam box - whenever that gets announced - and its apparent ability to play PC quality games on a little console. I hope this is the case.

All Steam need to do is release a box that streams content from the PC IMO. Just runs that big box view, has a couple of controllers and connects via wifi to ahost PC which does the grunt. It'd be cheap to put out and I reckon a lot of people would like that.

On the topic of multimedia : Why do I need my box to do streaming of movies and music for me? My SmartTV does that already AND more. Using a PS or Xbox for that now just adds an extra machine into the mix that isn't required. Sure SmartTVs might not be in every house yet but, I reckon, by the time the consoles come out the majority of people interested in that sort of thing will be running them.

Steam - yes, a steam box would be great. However, I can then see EA releasing an Origin box or something along those lines. I can see a market saturation occuring with stream boxes that will end up as the new console race. (RIP Nintendo).

Media - because first and foremost, Sony likes to think they're a media company. There's nothing wrong with that, but they're not the media group they used to be. Apple intend to release Apple TV's and all that crap, so why wouldn't Sony want to try and keep their fingers in all markets? All their consoles have shown that they want to be multimedia stations - PSOne, CD's; PS2, DVD's; PS3, Bluray's and more - so it makes sense that the PS4 will continue with this tradition.

Also, the fact that Sony will have pressure from PC's and knowing that consoles won't ever be at the same level as PC's they will want to provide a device which meets the needs of many. Whether that's your thing or not, that is not Sony's concern. They will want to hit all markers and whether they suceed or not, who cares.

I see where you're coming from but I still believe the whole streaming to a box thing is going to be short lived. We'll always need that for discs and physical media of course but, for streaming, why not just stream direct to the TVs? They've already been doing it for years so it's not that big of a jump to include more in the TV.... actually why not release a Playstation TV?!

Because that would sell as well as a Playstation Vita would.

I am interested to see what Sony will call it. PS4? The word around the campfire is that Microsoft are calling the nextbox simply, Xbox. I wonder if Sony will follow suit and drop the numbers as well?
