Just what is Microsoft's Xbox Smartglass and what can it do for your gaming? Mark sits down with CNET's Andy Hoyle to find out.
It is so funny to read the haters with limited creativity and vision saying that is pointless or useless. Well, be narrow minded and limit yourself. At the end is free and optional.
Borderlands map/inventory comes 2 mind for a start. Skyrim and other RPG's would all bennefit. Other genres I see no use at this time. Trust in the developers and we will plenty of neat but ultimately useless apps.
I think that this could be a cool gimmick. If game designers can implement it in an intelligent way it could take off. A big "if" though, Microsoft needs to make it easy for game developers if they want it to take off. I think the GPS implementation is cool though and if an RPG used it for inventory or stats or something like that, I would be even more interested. I do not own a tablet yet, but WIndows 8 might be a reason for me to get one now.
Clearly Microsoft is trying to steal thunder from Wii-U, but aint a great gimmick either, paying to see videos and bios of your favorite stars on your tablet? just need to google them on youtube and wikipedia, so WTF !?!?!
I don't imagine it can do much more than a WiiU, except make you despise XBox even more because they tried to cash in on Nintendo's poorly-implemented idea. And still tablets are giving that knowing, jaundiced look at both of them and not feeling any pressure.
Can see it being ok for rpgs but not driving games. After you show your playstation buddies what it can do you'll never use it again
ATM the best way to use smartglass IMO, is to type by using your mobile.
Its completely impractical on games, momentarily, maybe a game dev like Kojima will think smth very fancy with it in the future, but at the moment, the best feature remains the typing on your touchscreen, if you did not invested on a wireless mini keyboard already.
As i never had such intention and the need only appeared lately with the internet browser on the 360.
But i see no reason to invest on a windows tablet 8, just for such a gimmick...
Does it require xbox live gold with forza horizon ???coz the map didnt apperar on my android !!
I have gold and still not working.
So after research i realised that having paid the 360, monthly fee for Gold, the Premioum prize for a brand new Horizon and a nexus 7, it still wont work...
Smartglass works with my android phone though, but again in vain.
The only option to get the GPS function is by having a Windows 8 tablet.
So you need an extra investement, same goes for streaming media.
So its kind of a gimmick respond to the new tabler/controller Nintento will bring into game with WiiU.
I do believe that it works with a windows 8 PC, but i really dont see the reason to use it there...
This app is pretty cool... but android tablets not supported!!! I did manage to sideload tha apk and install it on my galaxy tab 2 and it works great. Just a few suggestions though, as far as navigating the dashboard it would be much better if you actually had a replica of the dashboard on your phone/tablet instead of just a blank screen with y,b,and x buttons. This way you would actually be navingating the dashboard on your device and could just tap a tile. I really dont think I will use this to navigate my xbox anyways, I think the core appeal is its support for games, such as bringing up the in game map, or other in game menus.
it looks interesting enough to warrant the 5 second download on my phone and play with it for 5 minutes. they said it's still only for win8, but is the one on google play official?
iT IS OFFICIAL, but only partially supported there.
Some devices dont support it at all and some only do it partially, but the full features are only supported by windows 8 tablets.
Only practical use for this i can see, is during down time usually wasted doing a line/skinning up, you can now also study to map in great detail!
What next?
An "interactive" oven on the tablet for cod, so you can watch your chicken roast while you "merc" (is that still what you guyz do?:P) people in the face!
The refresh rate on the tablet looks horrible...which makes it impractical for anything other than viewing a map....which of course makes it a redundant feature.
The refresh rate is due to the different networks, it works much smoother over one network. But don't take my word for it, its free so go check it out.
Some thoughts:
OK cool technology, but to what end.
I don't see the utility of this. You're playing the game (with both hands) and using the tablet with which hands? Man I hope there's not a plan to make the tablet the controller. If I wanted to play a game swiping and tilting with limited (though constantly improving) resposiveness I can spend $5 buck on an app or jump into a Kinect only game.
I see this as a ulility for the first thing demonstrated in this video and that's the entertainment functions which, if it continues down the wrong path, even further pulls the XBOX away from the gamers. PLEASE Microsoft remember who's currently printing money for you!
I use my Xbox for games and movies. A while ago I also saw a sheet that showed that most console owners use their console 60% of the time for things other then games. Which makes sense because the X360/PS3 is a powerful console so it can function as your dvd/blu-ray player, music station or full-on entertainment hub.
No doubt the next versions will offer more software abilities when it comes to movies and music. The hardware is already there, there is no reason not to add so many features. Xbox has already become Microsoft's entertainment brand. Xbox services such as Movies and Music are also available on PCs, tablets and phones.
Xbox music is done by the team behind Zune, Netflix is rumored to become Microsoft's movie team so Microsoft isn't taking away attention from games by adding these services. You're only getting more for the same price.
I don't get the point of this, how can you drive around and do things on the smartglass at the same time? you cant, so press start and view this on the the TV.
@sinn_exit @xgalacticax @DSkinMasque *sees comment*
really? i don't then explain it to me mr. genius
@thequickshooter @xgalacticax @DSkinMasque Clearly he has no idea what Wii U is all about.
@ji99saw @xgalacticax @DSkinMasque yeah,
and judging by your nickname you are what 12? 14?
@xgalacticax @DSkinMasque it's a console of course not just the huge controller that look like an ipad with joysticks
and probably more then you do
@DSkinMasque unnecessary too
the Gimmick is totally useless even if it expands the controller to more controls
it's the same bullshit as motion controls- it's useless, Uncomfortable and stupid (same goes for kinect, ps move is so-so but still less enjoyable then a gamepad)
nintendo's wii U it's just a cash grab in order to cover losses
but they think they can rich from casual gaming
but there is already the 3DS (and kids don't like stationary console, they like on the go console)
and to tell the truth it's stupid to buy a "next gen console" if it's the same as this gen's games and graphics capability
@sinn_exit @DSkinMasque someone's mad... (look fanboy your shitty wiiU sucks ass)
and so does your comment
@thequickshooter @DSkinMasque it's stupid to have a rant about you think is stupid and useless. If you don't like it then don't click on the article
10m16s - Forza. "This way.."(using a tablet for mini map) "... you never need to look away from the screen..."
What exactly are you doing when you're looking at your tablet then ? ? ! !
Wait a minute...you'd be looking away at another screen.....just like pausing the game and bring up a map........who'd have thunk it ?
These guys are a fucking joke!! I mean seriously grab someone who has actual knowledge rather than these two morons. 1. They pronounced LMFAO as an actually word. 2. This dumbass likes Skrillex........ (Face palm) 3. Imbecile has no awareness of what an incredible machine a Nissan GT-R is with this sarcastic comment, "who drives a Nissan?". Seriously, I would be blessed to have been able to own or just driven that car one day. Just a terrible review outrageously terrible!!! - Besides that I think the new smart glass feature would be a lot better torwards an rpg based game. Although, I am interested in how it would work with the upcoming title Halo4.
@InsidiousLime I think you may be taking things a tad too seriously. And you sound angry. I'd suggest getting a puppy; that'll cheer you up.
Junk review for a junk product (Zzzzzzzzzz). C'mon Microsoft, stop screwing around and start showing your next console.
Terrible ripoff of the Wii-U/DS/3DS dual-screen concepts. This is a f*cking joke, guys.
Am I the only person left who buys consoles to play GAMES and not all these worthless gimmicks and apps they keep cluttering up the X360 with?
