Epic comic book battles are coming to consoles courtesy of Injustice: Gods Among Us.
Who do you think would win in a fight, Superman or Batman? The answer to that question isn't nearly as obvious as you might think, and while online forums are a great place to debate such things, wouldn't it be great if there was a game in which you could put your theories to the test? Enter NetherRealm Studios' Injustice: Gods Among Us. That's right, Ed Boon--working alongside other evil geniuses responsible for 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, as well as the dynamic comic book writing duo of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti--has once again devised a plan worthy of Lex Luthor to render the Man of Steel vulnerable to fisticuffs.
NetherRealm's plan involves a one-on-one fighting game in which superheroes and villains do battle with each other. Batman and Wonder Woman went toe-to-toe at a recent press event, as did Superman and Solomon Grundy, and in many ways the fights that ensued wouldn't have looked out of place in a comic book. Not only are the combatants' respective moves very much in keeping with their characters, but environments like the Batcave and what we assumed was Metropolis (but were later told is "just a big-ass city") were impressively interactive and destructible.
How you interact with these environments will vary depending on what kind of character you're playing as. Batman is a "gadget" character, while Wonder Woman is a "power" character, so when the fight between the two of them ended up close to a parked car, they were able to bring it into play in very different ways. Batman simply grabbed his opponent and slammed her face down onto the hood, but when Wonder Woman retaliated, she was able to pick up the car and swing it down onto Batman's head.
When they're not weaponizing automobiles, characters will, of course, all have distinctive repertoires. Batman has access to an arsenal of gadgets that includes batarangs and a grapple gun (among many more, presumably); Wonder Woman can switch between multiple fighting styles depending on the weapon she's using (wielding the lasso of truth will be very different from using a sword and shield, for example); Solomon Grundy is able to pull knives from his back and put them to good use; and Superman has his heat vision. Superman also has an impressive supermove with which he can uppercut opponents into orbit before flying up there to smack them back down to Earth. How many characters on the game's roster will have comparable supermoves remains to be seen, but even those heroes and villains whose punches are never going to interfere with NASA launches are still capable of smacking their opponents between multiple arenas.
Fighting in the aforementioned city, you can send your opponents not only flying through the air, but also crashing through skyscrapers until they ultimately land on the roof of one. And then, while fighting on the roof, you can slam them down with so much force that when the fight resumes, you're both 30 stories down. Similarly, in The Bat Cave the fight can move from the main level where the Batmobile (armed with rockets that can be fired via a control panel at one end of the cave) is parked, down to the lower level where the Batboat can be seen in an underground stream. And after that, you can even fight in the elevator as you ride it back up.
Interactive environments, improvised weapons, and a distinct lack of decapitations aside, Injustice: Gods Among Us looks to be a fighting game very much in the vein of last year's Mortal Kombat. Impressively, when it's released sometime in 2013, the game will purportedly have a roster of "at least as many" characters as Mortal Kombat, which shipped with 28 on the disc. We've seen Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Solomon Grundy. Harley Quinn and The Flash have been confirmed. If you pay close attention to today's launch trailer, you can also spot a character who appears to be Lex Luthor in his Brainiac Suit doing battle with Superman. That still leaves more than 20 spots on the roster unaccounted for. Who will the rest of them be? Leave your guesses and wish lists in the comments below, especially if--like us--you're rooting for a scrappy underdog. The Ventriloquist, for example.
Not only does it look like there will be Lex Luthor in the game. But you can also see Joker in the Batcave picture, and it also seems that captain cold may be making an appearance since he is one of flash's bad guy's and in the trailer it looks like an ice shard is flying towards flash's face.
hopefully this will be a good fighting game but I'm already having my doubts. If this is using the same engine and mechanics as the mortal kombat game from last year then this is could great however it looks to be very similar to mk vs dc which was a disappointment in my book.
On a side note why don't they just make an action/adventure game similar to the batman arkham series except with the justice league and dc characters? As mentioned by others a fighting game with superheros doesn't quite make sense. Harley Quinn vs anyone...really??...is that a fair fight. Don't understand how they are making a lego justice league game, but not an actual justice league game. the lego game might actual turn out to be better than this game to be honest.
@scottyp360 I know how you feel about the lego games. Seems like there's a lego game for most popular series' now. It somewhat saddens me to think that most people (likely kids) that play the lego games have probably never even touched a real lego now. I think Harley Quinn could beat damn near anyone Joker could. I've always just seen her as a female version of the Joker. If no one else, she could at least beat Robin. I agree that MK vs. DC sucked balls and that they should just make a Justice League game (and maybe movie). The game could be kinda a DC version of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Now if we can get a Marvel fighting game and maybe eventually get a Marvel vs DC fighting game which could maybe even use some Amalgam characters.
Sounds like a great game. Good to hear the game is taking some multi-tiered level design cues from Mortal Kombat and presumably Dead of Alive. There's going to be destruable surfaces and objects; hopefully better than the Dragon Ball Raging Blast and Tenkachi series. Seeing that Ed Boon is working on it, and looking at the past MK vs DC game...I'm going to guess it won't be four simple button control a la Smash Bros.
Could this game accomplish what Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects couldn't??
Supes and Bats are my favorite heroes. The absurdity of a situation where they would fight to the death is amusing and thought evoking, but ultimately, Batman's the clear winner. Superman has too many weaknesses. Ask yourself this, if you take away Smallville's powers who would win, Clark or Bruce? Obviously the Caped Crusader. So, all the Greatest Detective has to do is nullify the Last Son of Krypton with Kryptonite. Under the gaze of Lead this could easily be accomplished by the Dark Knight and Kal-El would be defeated. Kent's my favorite, but Wayne's got his number.
On a side note:
Wouldn't a Superman and Batman movie be awesome? A serious horror film or a buddy-buddy comedy would be a nice twist.
On another side note:
My nerd factor just increased by 4% with this post.
Aslong as you ignore the Balance of powers and stuff like that this game will be awesome.
Now if only they'd make a MARVEL vs. DC game like this....
the biggest problem with this idea is that alot of people want a fighting game to fit into an inaccurate form of balance. This inaccurate balance system kills the point and renders the outcome meaningless. Powers will get dumbed down to ridiculously weak levels and likely affect every character the exact same way destroying alot of the individuality of the characters. Just look at DC vs. MK for example. or practically any fighting game involving any character superior to a normal human. If you can kill Superman with a series of shin kicks, the idea is massively flawed. Not saying it can't still be fun sometimes, but I think it'd be more fun if it was accurate. Give certain characters the appropriate vulnerabilities and immunities. For example, with Superman, regular bullets should be completely ineffective and a kryptonite bullet if aimed properly could get a 1 hit kill.
Superman would lose not because of how smart Batman is, but because of how stupid Superman is.He would go up close and get weakened by kryptonite instead of easily killing batman at range without him even knowing what hit him.
I know who would win between Batman and Superman. Batman because he always has kryptonite on deck. But if Superman cheated death in that Superman Movie were he got stab with a big ass stalactite of kryptonite sunk to the bottom of the ocean and magically broke free then swims to the surface without any problem Batman is boned.
P.S He should of died in that movie!
@MasterBlade7123 It's just a pitty that Batman 'needs' something to disable the Man of Steel in order to win, his training and standard equipment are therefoe all inferior, thus Batman is at taking on the super powered. On top of that what his plan for Solomon Grundy? A broken back?
Dude, we need Green Arrow
If Marvel vs Capcom can put Hawkeye in a fighting game, Green Arrow can be in one
I can't be the only one who sees a window of opportunity for ths game to truly take advantage of the true DC Universe. Why stay with the "Justice League"? Here are some of my character requests, many of which you may be familiar with:
Black Lantern Batman
Black Lantern Superman
Blue Lantern Flash
Indigo Lantern Wonder Woman
Yellow Lantern Scarecrow
See, wouldn't Vertigo characters work well?
Power characters: Supes, Solomon, Flash, Darkseid, Mongul, Wonder Woman, Mon-El - Kara Zor-El - or Zod?, Black Adam or Billy (Captain Marvel), Captain Atom, Bane, Killer Croc, Doomsday, Lobo, and possibly the last surviving Martian?
Gadget characters: Booster Gold, Batman, Blue Beetle, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Harley Quinn, 1 of the rogues or Mr Freeze, Joker, Lex Luthor, Nightwing - Jason Todd - or young Robin, Brainiac, Cat Woman, Hank Henshaw, Sinestro?
Hopefully we fit someone like Zatanna in there somewhere?
I'd personally love to see Azrael, Robin, Nightwing, Bane, Blue Beetle, Green Lantern, and the Martian Manhunter. Let's see how it goes.
@EzioSolidus azrael and bane would be a great fight to play. hopefully there are some great environments to fight in as well as multiple stages for each hero/villain. the potential for, and inevitable, dlc could also be huge for this game considering there will undoubtedly be roster snubs which will upset fans.
Needless to say, Poison Ivy, Phantasm and Kyodai Ken are my top 3. Clayface could be cool as could Killer Croc.
Sidenote, I find it rather odd that the trailer focuses on Harley Quinn and yet the Joker is nowhere to be found even though he's guaranteed to be playable. Question is, who's going to voice him? I think Mark Hammill isn't doing the Jokers voice anymore.
@thedrknite He wouldn't take Superman in a fight though. Just check out Superman Batman issue 33... Batman was gem amped which granted him insane power levels (on top of his already great fighting ability) and Superman could still stomp him with uttermost ease, once he decided it was better for Bruce to die than to suffer for the rest of his long life at the hands of a parasite.
Lol. Batman will never beat Superman. There's always an exploit that ceases the fight in 1 form or another. It's well known by those who read the comics that Batman, in a straight up match, regardless of how good of a detective he is (claimed #1 in the world) would get mercilessly curbstomped by a blood lusted Kal-El.
@kidnatural my belief is that batman is smart enough to never get into a 1 on 1 fist fight with superman and if so I'm pretty sure he has kryptonite on deck just in case. If batman is going to get into it with superman he will have a plan, unlike superman who will rely solely on his powers and strength to defeat superman. Batman/Bruce Wayne knows everything he needs to know about superman/clark kent to take him out if need be.
When I first heard about MK vs. DC, I thought it was a joke. When I learned it was really happening, I wished that it WAS a joke, because it seemed like a horrible idea. The ultra-violent world of Mortal Kombat just wasn't a place I wanted to see my favorite DC heroes.
However, after owning & playing the game for a short time, I have to admit I was really impressed with how well Boon and his team did, especially with the DC characters. The Joker is awesome in that game, and I love that many of the chars seem to be based on Alex Ross' art. I also liked that it was a "T" rated game, and that I could turn off the blood.
So, seeing that there's a new game by the same people is actually really exciting to me! With the previous game, I always found myself wishing that they'd just made a DC game and not bothered to mix it with MK, so I love that (apparently) they're going for all DC chars this time. Assuming that this game will have a T rating, and not be bloody (or at least have the option to turn off blood), I'm pretty much already sold on it.
@nini200 Superman has already beaten Batman too. Besides, Batman never straight up "beats" Superman. He allocates exploits to usually divert the fight overall, plus there's almost this concept that deep down, Clark doesn't want to hurt his friend so he's massively holding back. He doesn't actually stomp him.
For the superhero side:Zatanna,Power Girl,Huntress,Green Arrow,Nightwing,Cyborg,Aquaman,Green Lantern,and Martian Manhunter
Villains:Joker,Grollia Grod,Poision Ivy,Darksied,Granny Goodness,Circe,Doomsday,Mr. Freeze and Metallo.
They also should add Catwoman but she could be a hero or a villain.
Great loved MK but a sequel to MK would have been more appreciated, Anyways would keep an eye on it although I don't love too many DC characters as opposed to Marvel but would love to see Flash, Batman, Harley Quin, Robin, Superman, Joker, catwoman. And green lantern won't hurt either
villains: Black Adam, Bizarro, Gorrilla Grod, Cerce, Bane, Dr. Freeze, Metallo, Sinestro, Braniac, Black Manta
heroes: Green Lantern, Aquaman, Cyborg, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jonah Hex, Power Girl, Green Arrow, Catwoman (technically an anti-hero, I know), Raven, Beast Boy, Zattanna, Martian Manhunter, Adam Strange
as big of a batman fan and a super man-hater i am, i would have to admit, he can't beat him alone(he only need one partner to sneak up behind super man with kryptonite but still). holy ....! it's like a dream come true! a dc fighting game based on new 52 era!(just take a look at the costumes) please let there be red robin in it! and my other wish list is:heroes: red robin (big time wish),robin, nightwing, green lantern (kyle reyner), cyborg, (my three main wishes are up there confirmed) villians:lex luthur, joker, sinestro, dr. zoom, bane.too bad doomsday(as far as i know) dosen't exist in the new 52, he would have been awesome!
My god is just a game, who cares if "in the comics" superman would win? the hulk wasn't invincible in MvC right? ¬¬
