Who is it? Ocelot/the pain, can't remember

Ocelot is the first boss. For some reason I am also struggling with the controls.

If you dislike FFXIII, you're an idiot.
I hope I never hear the word "reaper" ever again.

He nearly had me pulling my hair out on normal, NORMAL! I never had problems in the other versions while going non lethal lol. My second playthrough I blew the crap out of him with every heavy weapon I had just to make me feel better.

Sounds like that's your problem right there. Get reacquainted with the controls and the fight should go pretty smoothly. Remember that when you are aiming in first-person you can use the L2/R2 buttons to lean to the side or press both to raise up a bit. Get behind cover and peek out like that.

If you need a refresher on more moves go find "Basic Actions" under one of the choices in the MGS3 main menu.

That's easier said then done when you're playing on an old SD tv that even at its brightest you can barely see what's in front of you.

I actually had an easier time with MGS3 this time around (got 0 kills/0 alerts on my first time through with minimal retries). But now that I'm going back and playing the original MGS I'm having a stupid hard time with it. Lack of first-person aiming is a bummer.
