I love playing Kinect with my parents. It's quality gaming at its finest. I love it. Afterwards, they tuck me into bed and read me my favorite story.
Microsoft hails record month for console, declares 2010 "biggest year in Xbox history" with 42% sales spike year-over-year; ongoing Kinect shortages predicted.
Last week at the Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft announced three milestones for the Xbox 360. The console's worldwide installed base has now reached 50 million, with 30 million Xbox Live members currently active. The company's new motion-sensing system, Kinect, also shipped 8 million units during its first 60 days on sale.
Today, prior to the NPD Group releasing its annual and December sales date, Microsoft announced more sales milestones for the Xbox 360. In December, the console sold 1.9 million units domestically, the largest one-month haul in the platform's history. The month also saw two multiplatform titles for the console--Call of Duty: Black Ops and Assassin's Creed--and one exclusive--Kinect Sports--crack NPD's top 10. (The full top 10 was not released by Microsoft.)
Microsoft also revealed some yearly stats for the console, saying it sold 6.8 million Xbox 360s domestically in 2010--a 42 percent increase. The company also said that more money was spent on Xbox 360 products than any other platform, totaling $6.2 billion including games.
Microsoft also warned that its Kinect motion-sensing system will be in short supply through March. The company said that in order to keep up with demand in December, it "pulled units from its January and February production." Apparently that wasn't even enough, with the company saying that the add-on sold out in many locales.
@swampstick I urge you to re-read your post "another Microsoft victory - It's the best gaming system on earth - has the best console exclusives - titles that come out on both consoles, the games generally look and play better on the Xbox 360. This is great news but really does not surprise those of us in the industry." Now back again to your second comment - of course you are a fan! i can smell it from miles away -- a fanboy with diapers though !! crying Microsoft is my mama all the way home Mr. regional sales director..
@demonkingsx5 the only multiplatt games that sold better was FFXIII(No Suprise there), and Batman because of the exclusive content, just to let u know only 2 games.
@flyingdutchdog It is good to site sources when stating things like, "For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality technique...". The problem is not that the resolution is lower or anything like that, but that running certain high res textures on the PS3's GPU will not look as good as the Xbox 360. This is, again, is because most of the graphics has to be ran on CPU. Each SPU can hold 4 gb of info (wiki). Also, each SPU can handle mulitple functions w/o a hit in performance (got this info from behind the senes "Uncharted 2"). But, I do not know what you mean by expensive in programming for SPU, however, yes, if you're saying that it is more expensive as far as R&D is concern, sure it is. But, look where technology is going. Hardware designers are trying to get rid of memory and big motherboard computing all togather. Game-xboxfanboy-spot just ran a CES article explaining that hardware devs at the CES show are showing off Windows 7 running on the processor only, using memory from the processor itself. The point is that the way programmers are programming for the PS3 is the wave of the future.
@flyingdutchdog What's grammar got to do with anything, you're the one writing near unreadable sentences with the euro,"tm" and the french "a"everywhere. You never had an original point because you never backed it up with any evidence; everything I've stated had firm recent back-up, you just gave me a 5 year old article talking about the very beginning of this generation. You can't even make your mind up if you're done with th subject, if you're done let it be.
@MEDzZ3RO I had to just one more time lol. Can?t help myself when I?m continually used as ?proving your original point.? Gears of War 2 looks as good as ANY PS3 title. In your finite mind you just can?t comprehend what has been said. Like you, I own all three systems and I also care about biased people talking out of their backside . Also to let you know, there is no such word as biasedly. There you have proved my original point. Bonsoir
@MEDzZ3RO Yeah, finally got a Wii a few months ago.I don't have that many titles for it, just SMG2,Twilight Princess, and the Wii Sports pack-in title. It has the motion plus, and seems pretty accurate, but it doesn't get most of my playtime. I mainly got it for the strong first party titles that Nintendo always comes through with, and like you, motion controls really aren't, my thing, I just like the different style of gaming once in a while. I got the Kinect just for that same reason,to give me a change of pace every now and then. I still won't play that nearly as much as say God of War 3, Alan Wake,Madden 11, or any of the COD games.
@godzillavskong I know what you mean.I suppose it's probably because I own a Wii and have sort of had my fill of motion based games this generation; you've still got that to come as I understand you don't have a Wii?
@MEDzZ3RO You say unlike the Wii, or Move, where you can use it as an alternative gaming controller? The thing about Kinect it that it isn't a system by itself. It is attached to a Xbox, which has controllers readily available, and I'm sure they will incorporate some unique control schemes with the controller, and Kinect. As far as Kinect only games, I can see where you are coming from, as far as getting tired, or maybe bored, but that is the good thing about it being attached to the 360. If you get tired of it for a while, just pop a game in the console, and play something different. I enjoy the change from the norm, so while I prefer a controller based game, I have no issue with getting a change of pace once in a while. I see your points, its just the thing were you say it is gimmicky, and by playing the games I don't think they are gimmicky at all, but they rather take advantage of the Kinects features. A lot of people up here are hating on Kinect, and I've seen the same posters ramble on and say how Kinect sucks, then later on they claim that the eyetoy is equal to Kinect, and those games are going to be great, or superior to Kinect. I just think this is a topic about the success of the 360, and Kinect, so it shouldn't get bombarded with negative comments against it, or how the competition is so much better. I wouldn't waste my time going over to a Sony topic spitting this nonsense(not referring to you). I'm sure it happens on both sides though, but it is redundant.
@MEDzZ3PRO Who am I talking to here? A 3 year old? OK if you want to believe what you want to believe so be it. However, do not assume I have proven your original point. I have compared God of War 3 and Gears 2 and will just say they are equal. Many ?professionals? have expressed Gears of War 2 has actually not been topped graphically. God o War 3 looks good but not as good as YOU think. You are of one opinion and that?s your own. Unfortunately for you, most people really don?t care. You refuse to see the big picture and that is how the architecture of each console works TOGETHER. The cell is horrible for rendering. It is not a gaming processor. Quote: ?If you really start getting into the cell you start running out of RAM quickly for games.? And so and so and so on. We can discuss this forever and get nowhere, hence I will end this discussion here. Don't be so myopic.I seriously hope you enjoy playing your PS3 and not be so consumed with what system is superior. Have a good day
@godzillavskong I'm not just saying Kinect, I'm saying almost all of the motion controllers. They're fun for awhile but after so long they have no lasting appeal because what you can actually do with them is fairly limited. That's my main issue with it, unlike Wii and Move where you can use it as an alternative gaming controller; like the eyetoy it's limited to its specific games. I've played Kinect with my sister and found it alright but I got bored of the Wii motion games years ago and preferred to play games like Zelda and Mario where it's used as a controller rather then an "extension of your body". It's not for me but it clearly has a market otherwise it wouldn't be selling so well. 3D TVs are the real hyped-up gimmick at the moment if you ask me. I know visuals aren't everything, gameplay is what really counts. Just look at Counter strike. I commented and it spun out of control into processing power and visuals where although I've said almost exactly the same thing as you, they wouldn't have none of it. I've tried to remain unbiased in all of my comments so not to spark an argument but as you can see it didn't work.
@MEDzZ3RO I was reading your previous post to flyingdutchdog, about when the PS3 dev kits weren't readily available, but I think both systems are using a new improved dev kit. I was reading a article about how Sony had a new, or optimized game engine to take advantage of their platform, and Microsoft has recently done the same, so I think it will be interesting to see how their new batch of games turn out. I also agree that Killzone3 and Uncharted 2 are some of the best looking console titles to date, but that said they aren't leaps ,and bounds above anything on the 360 either. The PS3 and 360 have visuals that are basically on par with each other imo.. Some look better than the other on both systems, while Sony may have the slightly better looking first party games.Either way they both look good enough for me and I won't be getting rid of either anytime soon just because one trumps the other in visuals.
@MEDzZ3RO While you are entitled to your opinion, I think Kinect is far from a gimmick. We are all aware that both Sony and Microsoft are trying to cash in on what the Wii has done, and grab some of that market share, but Microsoft has released a few good launch titles with Kinect. So gimmicky or not, a lot of people are having fun with it, and everyone I know that has tried it has loved it! Entertainment, isn't that what we are going for? I don't want them to lose focus on what got them where they are now,but it wouldn't bother me if they did use some of their vast resources to release some fun Kinect titles.
@flyingdutchdog I'm not "impressed" but it's a better source then just another gamers point of view. You've summed up what awheaten and I have both said all along.Reading this I assume it's a pre- late 2008 article when PS3 developer kits weren't readily available and there weren't many games running in HD like there are today. As is stated in this article the Xbox GPU is more powerful but the PS3 users SPUs and cells which as I said it's is harder to take advantage of (it's stated here also). You've proven my original point. Up untill late 2008 there was a noticable difference; just compare Fall Of Man and Gears Of War. The point this developper makes is a dated opinion (non HD titles and before readily available dev kits) which really doesn't reflect how things are today. Just compare God Of War 3 and Gears Of War 2 and tell me there's a noticably a worse image quality on God Of War 3.
@MEDzZ3RO Since you are so impressed by ?professional? opinion here you go: A Programmer?s Point of View Being a video game developer (I develop for both, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360) people ask me almost daily which platform I think is better. These are my personal feelings, in no way does this reflect my employer. Short answer: XBOX 360. Long answer: Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. I think the XBOX 360 wins in every category. Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it's quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU's the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU's on the PS3. Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex processing. I can't get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.
@hordaak there are more multiplates that came out last year that sold more on ps3 than xbox 360 i would'nt be surprised if dead space 2 sells more on ps3 than 360
The PS3 already has a KINECT but its called the PLAYSTATION EYE CAMERA and it does everything the KINECT does. Check out the new game KUNG-FU LIVE, its only on PS3 and NO CONTROLLERS NEEDED. Same as EYEPET.
@Alex_09 If you could point out where I've been biased?; I'd be biased if I said the PS3 has the best online experience and that the 360 is the best bluray player. These things are obviously false but if I was biased I'd enforce that regardless. What I've said has been true and isn't subject to opinion. I've clearly given each system there dues where they are best. I say again I do own all 3 systems.
@flyingdutchdog Name any 360 game that looks better then Uncharted 3, Killzone 3 or God Of War 3. The fact that Gears Of War 3 could run on a PS3 but Killzone 2 and God Of War 3 couldn't on a 360 in there current form should be proof enough....; GOW3's dynamic lighting is only possible due to the processing power of PS3's Cell SPU chips. The 360 doesn't use cells, there'd have to be sacrifices not to mention you'd need multiple discs. You don't have to agree for it to remain true. That's not fanboy-ism, it's the out and out truth. Ask any PC gamer who is impartial to either system and generally understands quite alot about specs. Here you go, a well known "expert" who's impartial to both systems. Youc an't say he's biased because the subject isn't even about 1 system or another: http://www.next-gen.biz/news/ps3-and-xbox-360-more-powerful-most-pcs-says-pachter @Alex_09 It works out cheaper for developpers to develop one game and port the to develop 2 games hence why they make the 360 version and port it. If they did it the other way around it wouldn't work so well because the 360 cannot run alot of PS3 games making use of the cells. @godzillavskong Yes I have played Kinect, my little sister has it (why do you think I'm on this page?). All the games so far on both Move and Kinect are gimmicks designed to profit off of Nintendos success. Even though Move is addressing this issue with Killzone 3, MAG and Socom 4; I won't be buying it because having played shooters on the Wii, it's fun but just not as accurate as you might imagine.
@MEDzZ3RO What do you consider a "shallow" game? Have you even tried any of the titles released for Kinect? I was skeptical, but Kinect Sports, and Kinect Adventures are actually very entertaining. Isn't that what were going for with these games, entertainment?I agree with a lot of people who say they prefer the standard controller type games ,but nothing is wrong with having a different form of gaming entertainment once in a while.
@MEDzZ3RO My main point was multiplatform games almost always run, and look better on xbox. That is a reason on it's own to buy the xbox in my opinion. The greatest games I've played have been multiplatform. RDR, Fallout, Oblivion(it actually had a better draw distance on ps3 but the frame rate was smoother on xbox). In the end we're both being biased and wasting time arguing. The difference is you won't find any of my comments bashing playstations on a ps3 article. I'm with you on the kinect though. I think the Kinect and the Move are just gimmicks. The games are so shallow it's not even funny. Hell the only one I've seen that looked entertaining was the Micheal Jackson game.
kinect compared to eyetoy is like a atom bomb to a stick of dynamite why can't fanboys just get along?
@MEDzZ3RO Really? Professionals acknowledge this do they? Actually, for whatever intent and purpose, you can find ?professionals? to say anything. I have little faith in that argument. There are even ?professionals? that say the 360 has in some of their exclusives, looked better than some of the PS3 exclusives. Don?t pay so much attention to ?professionals.? I don?t agree that ?Uncharted 2?, God of War 3, and Killzone 2 looked any better than Gears 2. If you feel they do, that is your prerogative, just don?t give me that ?professional? BS. Other than that, I enjoy all three systems immensely and am glad that I can play all the best games for all the systems.
@godzillavskong Yes they are; the PS3 is the natural advancement from the PS2, same as Kinect is the natural advancement of the Eyetoy. Tech improves over the years and the hardware is naturally better. It'd be like comparing the first cars to todays; it's essentially the same product but has improved greatly.
@flyingdutchdog Of course you do but that'sno more then slight colour differance more then anything else and really won't effect the graphics as such (jaggies,lighting..etc..). Subject to opinion of course but professionals acknowledge how good Uncharted 2, God Of War 3 and Killzone 2 look even when compared to the best the PC has to offer. The only 3rd party games I can think of that are likely to look as good as 1st party titles would be Rage and Crysis 2 which are being optimized for each systems specs.
@madSomnambulist You say you picked up a Kinect for the holidays, was it a Kinect Bundle, because your profile lists 0 360 titles? I find it hard to believe you got just the Kinect, with no 360, or are you just spitting negativity towards something you haven't even tried out, or have?! While there isn't a huge offering for the Kinect right now, there are some quality titles out there, like Kinect Sport, and the pack-in title Kinect Adventures. So open your Kinect box, hook it to your PS3, and try it out for a while!lol
@medzZ3RO I think that Kinect is much more than a polished eyetoy. It was some pretty impressive tech., and Microsoft paid a pretty penny for it. I'm not knocking the eyetoy, but I think that Kinect is a much better piece of hardware, capable of doing more than the eyetoy. Would you say the PS3 is nothing but a polished PS2?No.It's much more advanced.
@DKev16 If you really enjoy gaming, and can afford all three consoles, why shouldn't you? Each system has unique titles to offer. Gaming is probably a hobby for a lot of people up here, therefore most of them would have , or like to have, all three platforms. Like mad_krips , I also work 50hrs a week , but I enjoy gaming on my free time, and the phrase "work hard play hard" means just that for me, so I'll get to enjoy the best each system has to offer! I'm not going to bash you if you can only afford one console, but to say people are greedy for owning all three is retarded.
@awheaten Regarding your take on Halo and Gears, thanks for saying it was only your opinion and it's worth nothing. You reek of fanboyism through and through. I can say the same thing about Killzone and Resistance ... Killzone 2 was sluggish and paused everytime it accessed the hard drive and so on, but hey, only my opinion.
@MedzZ3RO Personally also having a PS3, I really don't see the graphics being any better on Sony's first party games. I still think it's a very subjective opinion and of course the owner of whatever system they have allegiance to will defend it right or wrong. Note: You said 360 blacks are considerably darker ... isn't that what you want blacks to be?
@DKev16 that is one of the dumbest things I ever read. I used to think rabid fanboyism was bad but you just took it a step further somehow. I'm amazed you have people agree with you for saying owning all three consoles is greedy and it is because the person can't make a decision. How about deciding to own them all so you don't have to miss out on anything? I don't understand why you are making it sound like people MUST pick a side and live by it.
@awheaten: You bring up a good point. But for whatever reason the games look better on the 360....who cares?? If a multiplatform game comes out, i'm getting it for my 360. if there is an exclusive on the ps3 I like, then i'll get it. but apparently, alot of the ps3 owners arent making a choice with their wallet as sales of the ps3 games including exclusives arent that great. you can argue till your blue in the face as to why this is...but it just is. people make choices with their wallet, and thats the only choice that matters.
@clqtte The more money Bill Gates gets the better, he uses his money in his wifes charity organization, and when he dies the bulk of his fortune goes to charity.
@hordaak Microsfot are good marketers hence why they secure alot of 3rd party title dlc exclusivity. Gran Turismo 5 is matching Halo and Gears saleswise; GT5 has sold 5,062,661 units worldwide by week 7 (now) whereas Halo Reach had sold 5,912,738 by week 7. GT5 clearly has a huge following aswell. My source is again VGChartz which has proven reasonably accurate in the past. Either way sales don't make a good game, there are plenty of great games with moderate sales that are just as good as there high profit counterparts. Look how many albums Britney Spears has sold, can any of us actually say she's good?
@Evo8u That was an older article to the one I'm referring to; I'm referring to the ones after the issues they had with framerate on the PS3 version because didn't know how to code for it. It was a learning curb. I urge you to read the Crysis 2 interviews to. I don't believe everything I read hence why I'm skeptical about where my source is. @awheaten Exactly; it's not cost efficient for developpers to develop 2 games at once so they port the game primarily running off the graphics card. That's why the 1st party PS3 games look so good compared to the multi platform games because they take full advantage of the cells. The multi platform games looked significantly better on 360 untill 2008 when PS3 dev kits became readily available and developpers started seeing the PS3 as a profitable platform. Gamma difference is now the major difference between multi platform games, 360 blacks are considerably darker. Thanks for clearing that up.
"You're talking ram which is undeniably important but the cores are so different. PS3 is using cells the 360 isn't." I agree that the Cell is an essential part of the power of the playstation 3. The thing with the Cell is that it can hold 4 gbs of memory by itself. Thats alot of memory on board with a processor (you can look up my info from wiki). Also the PS3 has a bus of 25.6 GB/s. Thats why games (exclusives) look much better on the PS3. Even if M$ has a better memory card, and it does. However, the PS3's bus speed allows developers to do a lot of graphical mechanics on the processor without even touching the video card. Thats why 3rd party games look better on the 360. Because the PS3 was designed to do most of it graphical work on the processor and it is easier to build a game on a graphics card than using Assembly to do graphics on the processor. Where on graphic cards you usually need to know C++ or C. Its much harder to build an engine with Assembly language, which is a low level language. Therefore, if you run a game on PS3's graphics card and the Xbox 360's graphics card, games r going 2 look better on the 360, which is usually the case with 3rd party games.
