Gran Turismo HD forerunner to new next-gen GT

Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi tells Famitsu that PS3 game is merely a taste of what's to come; title finalized.

Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the next Gran Turismo title in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. There were two points of interest in the article. First, the parenthetical "working title" has been dropped from the name, implying that Gran Turismo HD is indeed the final title. Second, while Yamauchi lavished praise on the game's high-definition graphics, he stated that the game was not the true next-gen heir to the popular racing series' crown.

In the article, Yamauchi called Gran Turismo HD a "port" of the data from Gran Turismo 4, upgraded to take advantage of the PlayStation 3's graphical capabilities. He also said it is "a step in the process of developing a next-generation GT game."

Yamauchi also implied that development on that next-gen game is already under way, albeit at an early stage. "We are working on a version of GT that supports the full PS3 specification," Yamauchi said, adding, "but in this transitional version, I think you'll get a taste of the potential that next generation games hold."

Yamauchi said the idea for the game actually came from an unlikely source, the Photo Mode in GT4, which allowed players to take high-resolution stills. "I thought it would be incredible to see these stills animated in real time," he said. Running at 60 frames per second in 1920x1080p resolution, Gran Turismo HD supports the very highest resolutions available to Japan's newest HD televisions, according to Famitsu.

    hmmm ... another 3 years or so of waiting i guess ... in the end im sure ... no tire marks .. no day & night alternations ... no real time weather.... when they will ever learn quantity is not a quality .. just make our eyes bleed

    Their so stubborn Y wasn't GT4 online . They fooled everyone in the general public . I though i was getting onlinen play, NOw they're making GT 4.5 for ps3. Stop rehashing old games, make new stuff. Companies been making the same old tired games over and over dont be fooled it's a trick.

    I don't understand how is GT-HD will show off the ps3 graphical capabilities if it's running on ps2 gfx engine? Porting GT4 doesn't show the ps3 power at all I mean even the xbox360 could run GT4 in 1080p at 60 fps with (damage effects). All the GT-HD screenshots I have seen just show how ugly GT4 is in 1080p.

    Forza Motorsport is better than GT4 I mean GT4 got more cars (MOSTLY ASIAN CARS) but the car all suck in GT4 and the A.I. is stupied it haven't change since the first GT which is sad.

    Yes, being an ubiased gamer is a bad thing.. the horror of enjoying all games that interest one. With the foreseable lineup, there are enough games on the PS3 and Wii that interest people. Among them, MGS4, Tekken 6, VF5, Heavenly Sword, Devil May Cry 4 etc. SMG, MP3, Zelda TTP etc.

    Pardon me if I chuckle the idea of "getting screwed" and moving on. I've been hearing the same bs from fanboys for the past 6 years online since the PS2's debut. It hasn't changed, so if you think it's a valid argument, more power to you. Right now, the PS3's real flaw that will turn some potential consumers away is the price point. Alas, there will be price drops. Cautious about the future, and are worried about the market share and potential games for the console? That's a valid concern, but that doesn't change the reality that there will be exclusives on the console that appeal to certain gamers. MS's market share was less than 25% of Sony's in the current gen, yet the Xbox had its share of great software.

    Maybe your dream will come true. MS takes over the market, and with a monopoly they turn it into a utopia like the PC software market. Yes, corporate arrogance will be a thing of the past. It's something MS isn't known for (this is sarcasm).

    The rest of your post has been evidently more dribble as I skimmed through it. Try to use something else other than a site called bluraysucks for an argument. That's all I have to say, so if you like, continue arguing among "yourself". You've been repeating the same nonesense consistently anyway. But try to refrain from using not-so-well thought out little jabs like the fruit fly bit... well, it has its comedic value, and shows how ticked off you might me.

That word would mean that it's Sony's exclusively, which is far from reality. BD has had 8 developers, and several other backers. Sony simply heads the PR/marketing for it. --------------------

I beg to differ, if a consoles BUYING PUBLIC doesnt support the console, it wont get so many titles will it? And what have I been saying all along, after so many latenight screwings from behind, customers will get tired of it and move on.     Next point, for others. I have read MANY posts that state that GT4 has an adjustable video output option up to 720p, and one message that says it doesnt... I personally dont know, and you can blame me for assuming that was the case without actually playing the game at hand first.. I do go off others comments that I trust, as I keep an open mind, unlike others that seem to only want to see their own side of it... Like I said, casting that blind fanboy eye again. As far as each console being equal to return to that, and each having great games. That is the goal, no? But when companies pull a cloud in front of the consumer and tell them to go on blind trust, then follow it up with throwing things at them, are you just supposed to stand there and take it, or help others move out of harms way? By your standpoint, sit back and watch them make their mistakes.. I guess its a point of view thing, but you wouldnt have considered that either would you? If a company looses market share, destroys their image and name, starts turning outright and visibly greedy, does that NOT reduce the number of offerings for said console? So, by all those facts at hand, do I or do I not have a point? Yes, I do.

    That point is simply and will remain, when a company gets too big of a head, they start to think their crap dont stink, and think that people are just mindless drones buying whatever they shoot out of their factories... That simply isnt the case, and has resulted in many companies demise, also correct no? And actually, yes it is Sonys baby, as Sony stands to win or loose the most from their move. Dont they also own the company that is the main person behind the format? Dont they also own the majority of the movie industry releasing said discs? ... Again, its their baby and they want it to win, because if it does - they do. However, use some common sense as to why the HDDVD-BluRay format war is already nearly over, before it even begins, and why I see this as not a strength but a weakness for the PS3.

    So in short, yes. I can think what I think because I have reason to think it, that is called thinking with logic. And no, that doesnt mean I am "beyond help", unless your definition of help = conversion to Sony fanboy status, which of course I wont do. Also - Just so you know you arent really special or anything ;p I have owned EVERY console released since the master system and nes, with the exception of the neogeo... And why did I not own a neogeo? For the SAME REASONS I wont be owning a PS3, along with a few others of course... But the comparisons are startling between the two at this point , no? Unless Sony tucks their ego back up their rear where it came from, then Sony is a ticking time bomb, whether or not you like it, and is doing nothing good for the gaming industry, they are simply giving more people bad experiences and making them think its all about money all the time, when that really isnt the case... Some companies ONLY think about the money, and some, think about the money AND their customers. How do I know this? I worked on the front lines of a few companies, and currently a consulting company, and I know that to attract business, as the saying goes, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. If you want good business, you dont toss the customers out the window at your first chance. And yes, my posts have a point. Most of my posts are geared towards clearing things up that are misconceptions and trying to help others through things and to help them understand more about the subject at hand. I try very hard not to speak with a bias towards any one company, but when this is what a company gives you to work with (Rehashes of games with a higher resolution and thats about it) its quite hard to give a recommendation for something I myself dont believe in. I cannot in good faith tell people to buy something that I myself wouldnt buy. I can however tell them the reasons for my beliefs, and give them the facts they need to decide whether or not it really IS a good decision for them. As I have stated many times, I HOPE that Sony pulls their head from their rears, as it would only do GOOD for all parties involved, them, the industry, and the consumers. And thats what we are all wanting , Right? Or is it that most of you use fighting with people like me, and the things you throw at me, as simply brazen attempts at saying "Mines bigger than yours".

    All I can say to that, is bring it. I have the confidence and the security of knowing "yours ISNT bigger than mine", and I am willing to break out the tape measure for that implicit reason. You can talk big of yourself all you want, but thats the same reasoning and logic behind guys driving around in Porsches and BMWs... I think its more of a lack of, and a compensation tactic than anything at this point.

    ... What can I say? You obviously like trying to draw parallels to dictatorships and terrorists when you want to talk negatively about something? I cry for the American education system as people like you thrive, and attack when their opinion is opposed. Do you not consider blindly following a company to be the same thing you are trying to accuse me of, yet I am not the one who cant see whats in front of their faces, or doesnt want to see it for that matter. It doesnt really matter though, hopefully as time goes on, systems like the Bill and Melinda foundation will hopefully help to reduce and eliminate that from our school system, as Bill Gates has had many talks with the government about the failing school system in America... Bill Gates and Microsoft have also spearheaded development in new ways of teaching, running a school, improving the intelligence and intellect of their students, etc. Again, I ask what has Sony done to address this problem in America? Nothing. Microsoft/B&M Found. have actual schools running across the US, with different strategies taking place to try to find the best way of teaching our youth, with the best technologies available, increased music and art programs, and more... I just dont get why you seem to think that respecting a company and someone for their achievments and goals is a bad thing? Yes, of course Microsoft has made their mistakes... But they have also done alot of good, and have done alot of things right, and that is why they are where they are. Instead of hating them for it, why not help your company achieve it? Get them to realize what they are doing, and the mistakes they are making.

    Ugh, GT4 DOES NOT run at 720p, or 1080i. It has a pseudo 1080i mode that doesn't really look nearly as good as true 1080i. The PS2's frame buffer simply isn't large enough for such resolutions.

    MS's history notwithstanding (outside of the games industry), a unbiased, level headed person can attest to the simple fact that each console has games that appeal to different audiences. The value is in the eyes of the beholder basically, so if you think that console A isn't worth your money, someone else doesn't, and vise versa. Of course, a hardcore gamer by every sense of the word (multi genre) thinks that each is worth it.

    Read the Famitsu article again, it has nothing to do with making GTHD a "retail product", what was talked about was GTHD AT E3. GS needs to translate article properly instead of injecting their own "what I think I got from the article" interpretation and generate FUD on the net.

    what really makes me laugh are the ppl so against this game and that PD is ripping ppl off. Most likely you are probably not a real fan of international racing and think that the fast and the furious is the true form of racing. Ppl forget that Gran Turismo has millions of fans and the game is one of many that have sold many many copies through out the world. PPl have the right to complain, but that is not going to stop the many fans in picking this game up. Plus when the GT5 comes it'll one of the best racing games to come out. Hopefully they will be showing this game off at TGS, cross my figures. As for GT HD this game looked amazing running at 1080P, plus the additional cars on the track was awesome to see, also in GT HD you can run with motorcycles side be side with cars. This was one of my favorite games to play at E3. BTW the dont think for a second that I dont play other racing games, i have a huge collection of racing games, but none come as close to real except for Gran Turismo games.

    I honestly dont know as I dont want to go back and sort through it to find that post, but I would guess he was talking about the fact that GT4 was already in 720p on the PS2, if you go into the video > options section, you can set it for that... So they really didnt do much other than increase the resolution a bit more than the origional (as it was already in HD)...

    I ran into this poor Sony fan-boy the other day. I tried to make him understand the PS3 only looks better. Every time you see a screen shot or clip for a PS3 game. Its running on a $5000 plasma TV or high end monitor with the display settings cranked up to eleven. You play the same game on that 20 inch Orion you have in your bedroom and guess what PS3 titles look slightly better current gen PS2 games

    I do have to comment on this as well.. While I understand the point you are trying to get across, as well as the basis for what you are saying... That is part of the reason that I am so happy with my 360... I have had many friends say "I dont have the money to spend thousands on an HDTV".. I say thats cool, go to GameStop or EB and pick up a monitor cable for the 360 (Official product, Not third party) for like 39.95... Along with a cheap monitor, you now have a full HD solution available to you... What you say? You only have one monitor? Thats an easy solution too, for 9.95, and at some places even less, you can pick up a cheap VGA switchbox that allows you to switch from PC to 360 and back easily. So yeah... Thats how cheap and easy it is to go HD with the 360... No need for expensive tvs, if you dont want it... You can have HD with cheap monitors, or, if you dont care about HD, then just use it with a standard def tv... The choice is yours, and thats what a quality product offers: Choice.

    Also, I do have to disagree with the controllers, cameras, etc. bit... A good example of this is the (upcoming - September 19th if I recall) Live Vision Camera for 360... It has been VERY well designed and thought out, the first games that support it are already out and more are coming (Supporting in-game face mapping, game control via video, much more etc)... I actually am pretty impressed with it so far, from what I have seen. I was very disappointed with the eyetoy, from how it worked to how it was supported... However the 360 Live Vision seems to have both of those in check (at least for now, we will see how future support goes but I am guessing it will be like the rest of the 360). I mean, they even make the interface background have a cool rippling video effect of what the camera sees ontop of the background picture... lol... Controllers, again, Microsoft really surprised me with the wireless controllers for the 360. They are comfortable, easy to hold, familiar design with improved feel, lighter than I expected, batteries last longer than I expected, very responsive, They didnt copy the XBOX button in the middle they made it, whereas Sony has now copied that idea as well, in that you press the PS logo on the center of the controller to open their menu... How lame lol... Things like that though, DO deserve money... Some of the stuff though (Such as portapotty games like this) dont deserve the time of day. And if this is a showcase for what Sony intends to deliver to their consumers, am I wrong in being worried about where they are going? No.

    ... That is contradictory... You come talking about how the PS3 screams next-gen with its games, on the board of a game that looks like a hi-def PS2 title... I can deny the system they put together, as it has many technical flaws... I can also deny the fact the developers are given better tools to work with... I can also deny the fact there arent quality games on the 360, and more to come, and frankly, likely more period than the PS3. I can also deny the fact that the games look better, to the point of justifying a PS3... Games arent JUST graphics, yes they are great... But the games themselves also are important... A game like this solidifies my reasons for skipping past the PS3 for now, as it seems to be getting the "Lets just release trash and they will buy it" philosophy that Sony preaches as of late... Their heads have gotten too large, and it shows.. Why even bother fighting it? Its obvious you are wrong, and the only people denying it at this point are Sony fanboys.

    lol... Pay back sucks doesnt it? I cant help it that this round, SONY is the one who I can point many a finger at and say BOO to what they are doing, releasing, etc. Last generation I converted when Halo 2 released, as I seen the light from what Microsofts offerings were... Thats also when I experienced Live, and the last time I went back to even try to play the crappy PS2 online (Which failed to provide me with any real enjoyment, mostly setup hassles... I guess I did play one game, one time, online that was fun and had a few other people actually playing..) So... Yeah... I am not STUCK on any one console, I go with what works and does the job for a price I want to pay and for the games I enjoy. Currently, as I keep saying, games like this do nothing but make Sony look even worse, as they already are releasing a bloated console with unecessary tech in it, pushing their proprietary formats, and now pushing rehashes of the same titles just with increased resolution (and possibly online)... Both of which I would expect to be upgrades to the existing product, not another 60.00 purchase for a 600.00 system. That simply doesnt make financial sense, and will not impress consumers. Also, consumers ARE beginning to realize and wonder, why all the time was spent making a port of an old game, instead of working on the next gen GT5?... "It takes time to make a next gen game" Isnt an excuse.. They have had alot of time, but they are still working on polishing up a rerelease of GT4, to milk money, thats why.

    I of course hope that is the case, however, as I have given perfect examples of, games like this are what cause me concern. Sonys head is growing at an alarming rate, and the gamers are suffering as a result. What is the only way to battle such a company? Do what I do, inform those less "in the know" or tech-friendly, how badly they really are getting screwed, and open their eyes to the other systems/games that are out there that DESERVE their money, unlike the cash cows that simply want to herd you all in and rape your wallets. At this point, I cant say Sony gives us what we want, keeps promises, follows up on their boasts, supports their products well, has alot of great games for the new system, the system itself having great reason to buy it, etc. Thats the problem... Unless Sony begins to realize this, its only a matter of time before they start their downward spiral, because honestly, it will only take time before people realize it and say ENOUGH with getting screwed like this. I apollogize if you dont like that, but that is simply the fact and truth.

    The Gamecube suffered from "enhanced remakes" of Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil. Gran Turismo is the Halo of racers. You don't take a AAA title and remake it for next gen. I wouldn't want Halo HD.
