X06: MS gets Bioshock, Splinter Cell 5 exclusivity

Irrational Games shooter and Ubisoft sequel to Double Agent locked down for Xbox 360, PC.

Microsoft kicked off its X06 event in Barcelona today with an array of big announcements at its media briefing, not the least of which was a pair of anticipated titles becoming exclusives for the Xbox 360 and PC.

First off, Microsoft snatched up exclusivity on Irrational Games' Bioshock. Chosen by GameSpot editors earlier this year as the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006 Game of the Show, Bioshock was previously slated to be released on the PC and "next-generation console systems." An Xbox 360 version was shown behind closed doors at the event.

Another big exclusivity announcement from the media briefing was that the next installment of Splinter Cell would be coming only for Microsoft's next-gen console and the PC. And by "next installment," Microsoft didn't mean Splinter Cell: Double Agent, which hits multiple platforms later this year and was shown off with a new trailer. It was referring to the Splinter Cell game after Double Agent, which came to light just last week when assets for a whole slate of Ubisoft titles, including Splinter Cell 5, accidentally hit the Web.

Bioshock is expected to release next spring, while the next installment of Splinter Cell has not been officially named or dated. For more news from the media briefing, check out GameSpot's live blog of the event.

I love the way microsoft supports its consoles by getting as many good games as it can. I'm sure sony does too. I mean they have Resistance and... uh... they have... uh... hm. Well at least you have Resistance.

Damn i love MS. Couldn't be happier. So long as they don't make the mistake of arrogance in the form of over pricing everything, like sony, they will take this gen and the next. (and i don't consider marketplace and quality online a part of overarrogance. )

I don't think the bearded man we see now is what drew us to the series before, it was the always masked Sam Fisher, not a loser who flashes his face all around, what happened to the STEALTH???!!!!!!

Well, I am a PC gamer so I guess this is good news. However, MS certainly seems to be buying the industry which I don't think is a terribly good thing for anyone.

i've been a huge splinter cell fan the the series seems to have climaxed with chaos theory. double agent despite the effort feels like a more disjointed game than the predessesor, even with some exceptional level design.

this means one thing, if the game is indeed exclusive then it will look better, the porting process really effects the quality of visuals look at brothers in arms. ew.

Awesome!! This game belongs on the 360. After reading that the 360's GPU is twice what the RSX is, this is great news. I wouldnt buy neither of the two games for any other system anyway. I think Microsoft is going to do this with many other games as well and its about time. This time around, Microsoft is the king of exclusives. Yah!!!

I've enjoyed all the Splinter Cell games on original xbox, bought Double Agent and to be honest i'm not that impressed. Chronic slowdown when aiming the rifle and the swimming is crap. On the whole it feels dull and I dont like daylight levels! Splinter Cell should be all about the shadows! Hope they sort it out for the new one, not sure i'll bother finishing D.A. and I finished all the other games in the series, Chaos Theory being my personal favorite. R6 VEGAS is much more graphically intensive and yet has none of the problem.

Shame the new Splinter Cell is going to be exclusive, I don't really want to have to get an Xbox 360 to play it, and I don't enjoy these kinds of games on my PC. I really hope they change their mind about Splinter Cell. I agree with Syphon to some extent, because the Xbox versions tend to have mroe contect - more missions namely. Double Agent was awesome on PS2 but the annoying thing was that there weren't any of the missions that I was looking forward to on it, apparently (correct me if i'm wrong) Xbox had like 14 missions? While the PS2 had a measly 9!

i love the splinter cell series and can't wiat for double agent to hit my pc. i'm quite excited
exclusive titles also usually run better and are better designed for the respective remotes. hope that bioshock doesn't end up feeling like a gamepad game on the pc though.

Splinter Cell 5, an exclusive 360? Mmm... I remember reading that Assassin's Creed was a PS3 exclusive... and yet, the 360 will have it.

Can we really trust these statements? I doubt it. Splinter Cell 5 is not even named yet. Microsoft is just luring the consumer to buy the 360 by creating false expectation. It seem they are using their Vaporware marketing strategy again. Nothing force them to actually release the game (or maybe it will just be a small plateformer on XBL). They only have to say that the game is delayed (and we do hear that very often... the "it will ship when it's ready" scheme).

The consumer should always be careful with these statements. Especially from Microsoft (or Sony), who has a bad tendency to "exagerate" (you see it on the console side, and more often on the PC side).

If a multiplatform game has slowdown on Xbox and not on PS2, it's fault of the developers, that didn't do the right job, because Xbox is a more capable machine.

  • fetusfart18

    Posted Sep 30, 2006 4:04 pm PT

geeeeze, MGS creator Hideo Kojima was probably referring to performance issues on Xbox, not sales, because the Xbox version MGS2:S was plagued with slowdown from beginning to end, while te PS version wasn't.

And only Sony fans play MGS? Wow, I must a HUGE Sony fan, since I love MGS yet do not own a single Sony console, or the PSP. Interesing. You learn something new about yourself everyday.

Bioshock for 360 only. That's gotta suck for future PS3 and PC owners.

xbox is capable of doing more then the ps2 graphically. When the asian developer of mgs4 said that he didn't like the way the games turned out on the other consoles, he might have been taking about sales. The only people buying games such as mgs are sony fans, or he's just trying to make other consoles look bad. The wii60 doesn't deserve mgs4. It deserves better.

Hmmm o well..It looked pretty good I wanted 2 play but o well...and Splinter Cell I can do w/o...chance are it'll get ported eventually...it's Ubisoft. And MGS4 will probably neva ever (99.9 % sure)come 2 360...the creater of mgs...said in a article shown in gamespot that he's not portin anymore MGS over 2 any other systems b/c he didn't liked how they turned out on the other systems. So yea tough luck 4 u wii60 fans....he did said he would work on other projects on those systems though

i think it is a good idea for splintercell 5 to be a 360 only game, thats where it origanated and was always the best. but thats just my opinion im definatly not a mircosoft fanboy.

  • neoand12

    Posted Sep 28, 2006 1:13 pm PT

Wii60 suck and fanboys need to get off that....any way Ubisoft made a big mistake on SC5 what about the people that still have an old Xbox or PS2 well you have lower your sales.

The big problem with cross platform titles is that developers aim for the least common denominator between the consoles. Exclusive titles are able, in theory at least, to max out the capabilities of one system. Making a better game hopefully.

  • doobist

    Posted Sep 28, 2006 10:32 am PT

I wonder how much money MS pays to get titles exclusive. I'm thinking that the developers will make more from the cash they get from MS than they will from actual sales.

Pastehunter, you say that as if Ninja Gaiden isn't coming out for the 360 Xbox was the platform that launched the series, lets think before we open our mouths shall we?

  • KYOGRE

    Posted Sep 28, 2006 10:14 am PT

Sony doesn't rull Pastehunter. Halo in the U.S. alone can make more money then Ninja Gaiden, MGS4, and DMC4 combined. Not that those games aren't aswome.

  • Deimos27

    Posted Sep 28, 2006 9:53 am PT

Awww... Really, developers should terminate 'exclusivity'. I mean, if they make titles muli-platform, wouldnt it benefit them in the end?

    More platforms = More money

What? These guys dont like money???

  • Pastehunter

    Posted Sep 28, 2006 9:19 am PT

Common people , This will be like with thge first SC , anyways Sony rullz , and games like Ninja Gaiden , MGS4 , DMC4 will be all his .

MGS4 on 360 doesnt seem unlikely really...Maybe eventually even a PC port too.I don't really see why it's hard to believe.
