Nintendo recalling Japanese DS chargers

Company says overheating, burns possible with 200,000 AC/DC adaptors; problematic handheld chargers released only in Japan.

Wimpy Wii Remote straps aren't the only thing Nintendo is having problems with. The company today also announced a recall of 200,000 AC/DC adaptors for its DS handheld, according to Reuters. Nintendo says the affected chargers, manufactured by Nagono Japan Radio and sold in Japan between January and October of this year, are prone to overheating and could burn unwitting gamers. No injuries have yet been reported.

Maybe you just dont hear as much about it in the news... Since its only happening in Japan... But, Im sure if it affected other countries you would be hearing about it more... Besides how would they know they were overheating unless they were getting complaints... Based on this article it doesn't really give the reader much facts... It just tells us they had manufactured faulty AC/DC adapters... But like I said its in Japan only no facts no judgement... So we cant really judge and say... Great Job Nintendo!

This is an example of a great company. Identifying the problem before its even happened and sorting it out straight away. Sony, take note.

lmao if this was a PSP people would bash the crap out of it.

    DS:
"Well at least the problem is only in Japan"

    If it were a PSP...

    "HAHA SONY- DS PWNS ~!@!@!@!"

It's just a charger. No biggie, most of those can be produced easily enough and at minimal cost.

Because of one issue that's being taken care of already? Eh?

Well at least it did not harm anyone and they found out the problem before anything bad has actually happened.

I hope they give a model number for the rechargers. I would like to be sure that mine didn't get one. I know that there saying its only in Japan but it would give me some piece at mind.

    @spikeyboy22915

that's because given Sony's past history they wouldn't recall until multiple incidents unlike Nintendo who appears to be calling the ball before it leaves the court.

If Sony were to do a recall before an incident occurs as Nintendo apparently is they'd get blasted for sure. I mean come on...exploding batteries...WTF?

Its funny how since this happened to the DS everyone is applauding the fact that Nintendo acted upon it quickly. If this happened to the PSP every one of these posts would be blasting Sony for inferior quality products.

ShockG707: Did you actually imply that the Nintendo DS would "burn down your loved ones"? Dumb dude. really dumb.

Everything has problems once in awhile, from cars to phones to TVs to game systems to household appliences to EVERYTHING. The mark of a good company isn't that they never have problems, it's that they act quickly and effectively to fix problems when they do come up.

They jumped on this before any ONE of you jokers even knew there was a problem. Seriously, how many of you knew, before they announced this recall, that there even was a problem with DS lite chargers?

Ninty, this is why we love you. Keep up the good work.

Its funny how Sont fanboys/fangirls have to post anti Nintendo comments in Nintendo stories because they dont want to speak positively about the PS3 in their own forums. I dont mind or hate the PS3 and I hope it does well for the sake of healthy competition, but I enjoy playing with my Wii and my Nintendo DS, and I dont need someone to criticize my systems for absurd reasons that should not affect the average consumer.

"Looks the PS3 is the only system that wont:

    1. Burn down your home and loved ones
    2. Put a hole through your TV, window, or worse
    3. Make you waste massive amounts of gas driving to the store to replace your 4th faulty console of the year."

    1. Notice how this is only in Japan, and only 200,000 AC adapters. Keep in mind finding a DS in Japan is as hard as finding a PS3 in N.A. It's a precautionary recall, nothing has actually happened because of the faulty AC's.

    2. Your lack of brain cells put the hole through your TV, not Nintendo.

    3. The Wal-Mart near my store has had 6 of 8 launch PS3's return as defects. Our in-store PS3 has already broken down, and we've had 3 returns (EB Games). Wii returns? 0. Wii interactives broken? 0.

GreyDawg: "The funny thing is I sold a painting last night"

You're an artist? 'Grats on selling the painting.

And even if what Shock says is true, Sony's had far more screw-ups lately than Nintendo has. PR-wise, recall-wise, sales-wise, games-wise.

And like PalentinePoet said, at least Nintendo caught the problem and weren't goaded into action.

looks to me like the PS3:

    1. is overpriced
    2. lacks good games
    3. is a huge waste

in time, ps3 defects will appear. mark my words

Dude, I heard about this YESTERDAY!! This is like the 6th time I've heard about video game news from non-game news sites long before they end up on Gamespot, what's up with that? Don't get me wrong---I LOVE Gamespot, but living on the East Coast, there isn't anything new on Gamespot.com until about 1 or 2 PM every day. It's just weird, that's all.
    .
The funny thing is I sold a painting last night and I'm planning on buying a DS Lite with the money. I love my PSP, but I always wanted to play DS games (AND the GBA Castlevania games)

    Ho'crap! Nintendo pulled a Sony!

Not that I like that fact, but sheesh! Way to screw up, Nintendo.

Edit: Uh, but, to clarify..I hope this doesn't affect them like it did Sony's laptop battery recalls. Either way, it seems pretty serious. Though I do think Tim's comment about the "Wimpy Remote Straps" was a little uncalled for.

Re-Edit: Plus, at least they're doing it quickly, too..
