THQ earnings to hit $1 billion

Pixar, Nickelodeon, Saints Row, and WWE SmackDown! publisher expects to set new milestone in net sales for fiscal-year 2007.

California-based publisher THQ has had a good year, which it attributes to stronger-than-expected sales of games including WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007, Cars, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The company behind the surprise Xbox 360 hit Saints Row has amended its forecasts for fiscal-year 2007 and expects to reach a cool $1 billion in net sales. Third-quarter net sales were also up, reaching a figure $175 million higher than the previous estimates of $425 million.

President and CEO of THQ, Brian Farrell, commented, "THQ's platform strategy served us very well this holiday...This performance combined with our successful original property launches exclusively for next-generation systems have positioned THQ to achieve the significant milestone of $1 billion in sales for fiscal 2007."

The company also said that it would be delaying the release of an unannounced PlayStation 3 title to the first quarter of fiscal-year 2008.

[UPDATE] Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson today sent out a note to investors with his take on the THQ earnings revision, including speculation on the mystery PS3 game. Wilson said he believes the game to be a new version of Saints Row, with the delay meant to either manage the company's flow of games into the market or improve the overall quality of the game.

"Wilson said he believes the game to be a new version of Saints Row, with the delay meant to either manage the company's flow of games into the market or improve the overall quality of the game." I sure hope it`s the later. It would be neat to see motion-sensing and better graphics and gameplay.

I know it's wild speculation, but the idea of Saint's Row appearing on the PlayStation 3 is kinda sweet.

nice to hear ps3 might get saints row. "

It wont sell very well, unless of course GTA4 is delayed for the ps3 THAT much.. People only really bought this game because there is no gta next gen game. When gta4 comes out, all immitations will be eating its dust, likewise with games like dead rising, if resi 5 was out, you can guarantee that it wouldnt of met that 1 million mark.

THQ better release a wrestling game where you can actually put your own music as an entrance theme... and maybe give the game a more TV LIKE feel, at the moment it looks like playing with action figures..

    "$1 billion in net sales
now how much of that is actual profit? net sales mean nothing until you deduct costs in making and promiting the game"

They didn't say gross, they said net, meaning its there's.

Oh it's no surprise,THQ plays big.Though Saint's Row is just another game to keep GTA fans busy until GTA5,and I only buy the big hits(such as GTA,Halflife,Halo,Gears of War,Morrowind Series).Idon't but bad or ok games, not for $60.I have to say though,I played Saint's Row at my friends house and it's inbetween a hit and an ok game(it's ghetto!)

I think I might have contributed a bit to that $1 billion in sales (own all three Dawn of War games and plan to get CoH at some point)...

But hey, if a publisher continues to churn out quality games from their developers, I've got no problem with helping to add to their sales figures .

Smartest games company in the world. Shoddy games that sell bucket loads. It seems that poor quality stuff sells really well these days. (for UK readers)
You guys remember when the only games that sold well were the ones given great scores by Mean Machines and Nintendo Magazine System. There's a bit of nostalgia for you.

I love saints row, i stoped playing in the middle because i got cought up in Rainbow Six but once i'm done messing around with Rainbow i'm going to wrap up with the 3rd street saints. THQ got a nice sleeper hit right there.

]]]] It's cool - those games are their Wal-Mart specials. Keeps THQ afloat so that developers like Relic, GSC and Gas-Powered can give them high budget Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War games, Company of Heroes, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Supreme Commander. THQ owns on PC. Every publisher needs its undignified (in the eyes of core gamers) cash cows like in the above THQ story. I personally love what the company's been publishing recently.

Well, we all know anything with the WWE brand on it will sell like hotcakes. I hope they make a Saints Row 2, although it needs to have a few more things that set it apart from GTA (I.E. stop simply slapping a new coat of paint on the exact same game over and over and over).
