Retail Radar: Saints Row poppin' caps on PS3

EB Games, GameStop post product listings for THQ's previously Xbox 360-exclusive gangbanger for the PlayStation 3.

Conventional wisdom says one of the keys to the next-generation system wars is game exclusivity. While Microsoft has locked up several games as Xbox 360 exclusives--the next edition of Splinter Cell, the upcoming BioShock, and million-shipper Dead Rising to name a few--Sony has reportedly let some exclusives slip through its fingers.

If a product listing on retailers EBGames.com and GameStop.com are any indication, at least one Xbox 360 exclusive is jumping ship for Microsoft's chief rival.

After THQ said it had delayed an unannounced PS3 game yesterday, GameSpot user SporkFireXPS pointed out that the two stores both have a listing for a PlayStation 3 edition of Saints Row, the gang warfare action game from THQ. He wasn't the only one who speculated on that being the game in question, as Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson told investors he believed the mystery game to be a PS3 version of Saints Row.

No details on the PS3 version are listed, except for a ship date of May 15. Saints Row was released on the Xbox 360 in late August, and THQ never announced that the game was PS3 bound.

THQ had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

    I had a chance to play (and finish) saints row a while back on a friends house. No reason to play it again. Are they really gonna put that on shelves the same year as GTA4... bad move.

    bdhoff It's a good game. PS3 owners will enjoy it. It isn't GTA, but it's fun.

    But seriously, was it ever exclusive? 360 exclusives have "Only on Xbox 360" printed on the cover art. I bought this game on release day and it does not have that. Dead Rising and Lost Planet do. That just says to me that the game was never an exclusive. Also, Volition hinted that it was coming to the PS3 months ago during the whole vsync flap.

    All of this fighting for nothing.

    Hmmm, usually it does, but does it really count as multiplatform if it was designed for one console and later ported? Resident Evil 4 was great on the gamecube, I don't know if it sucked since it went to Ps2 a year later. Half Life 2 was made whithout thinking about the console world but later it got ported. It didn't have a mouse but I wouldn't say it sucked.

    lol well we know why that is THQ have been sued quite a bit recently they need the money+ Microsoft's dictionary for words (if you look up the word exclusive in it) means: might be exclusive but probably not but if i say this then i know loads of jummies will be going around bragging that its only commming to the xbox360 and they will buy my console

    *Sighs* Ports usually don't have anything MUCH diffrent about them anyways.

    But anyways: I'm a sony fanboy. I'll admit that. I have a PS3. Graphics better than 360? Not since Gears of War. HOWEVER, like someone mentioned before, 360 had a tuff beginning as well, with graphics not being too far from the first X-box. Its only fair to wait until PS3 gets their share of exclusive good games as well. Like Heavenly Sword or Heavy Rain. That is when it'll be fair to start this crazy next-gen battle between microsoft and sony.

    Ehh...actually, I've seen cases of them at most of the places I go. We've got a bunch of them at the EB I work at. We plastered signs all over the windows, indicating we had PS3's, but nobody seems to want them. Everybody is Wii crazy, right now.

    Anyway, I think it's pretty cool it's being ported to the PS3. I can't wait to see the finished result (though something tells me it will more than likely be the exact same game.)

    So the 360 could be losing an exclusive and the Xbots say it doesn't matter when when the PS3 loses one is "Sony is screwed, go MS!!!!" So funny. I wasn't going to get this game anyway.

    epormada, maybe because you live is a poor area but where I am it's still hard to get a PS3. The 360 is inferior to the PS3 and when Lair, Heavenly Sword and the final version of Motorstorm come out the tide will begin to turn. Obviously the 360 now has better games, well only 1 really Gears of War.

    Nobody that already doesn't want a PS3 is going to get one for Saints Row! Especially when you can get it for like $30 on $200 cheaper system, ahem 360, if anything this will just sell more 360's as the game will be equal or better on the 360 just like every other port so far. Crazy87 YES the Best Buy by my house has had the same shipment of PS3's for almost a week now, you couldn't get a 360 till June after it came out. Face it, unless your head is where the sun don't shine (which is where most Sony fanboys heads are) you would know that the PS3 is not that great, especially not $600 great!

    After all why don't those same people have one already?

    We need a special support group for die-hard fans who have not gotten a PS3 yet. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Maybe those people have the same problem i do and that is we are from Europe. The Playstation 3 will come out in 2 months. I have mine reserved just like most people that whant a Playstation 3 on release. Maybe you would realise this before you comment people on what they are saying instead of trowing fuel on the fire?     Capcom producer says there's a strong chance the Xbox 360 game will be ported to other platforms.

    1up.com has been speaking to Jun Takeuchi, one of the producers on Capcom's excellent looking Xbox 360 action title Lost Planet. The most interesting nugget of information to come for the chat has already sent internet chat forums into a fanboy frenzy: the game might not stay an Xbox 360 exclusive.

    "We will try to keep it as a 360 exclusive," Takeuchi said. "But, from the company's point of view, when you think about the business, in the future it's something [port the game to PS3] we might have to do."

    It makes perfect sense from a business standpoint to port the game to the PlayStation 3, particularly to gain sales in Japan, where the Xbox 360 version is almost certain to bomb. Although sales of the game are predicted to be high in Europe and North America, the Xbox 360 is failing to make an impression in Japan, where the PlayStation 3 and Wii are expected to dominate.

    Takeuchi suggested that the Xbox 360's poor sales in Japan aren't cause for a total lack of Japanese developed titles: "We hope that more Japanese publishers realise there are more markets outside of Japan," he commented.

    Moving on to downloadable content for Lost Planet before the game hits store shelves, Takeuchi wouldn't be drawn on the company's exact plans, but he did say that "we [Capcom] will upload something to keep the users busy until release." Not a confirmation of a multiplayer demo, then, but at least we know something is coming.

    Why do people ignore MGS4,DMC4, Heavenly Sword, White Knight and FFXIII? And developers are not having a hard time with PS3 games as I remember the Xbox 360 took a whole year to get a killer app. Gears of war is the only good Xbox 360 exclusive right now. I have all 3 next gen consoles so don't try to convince me anything. I am a computer mechanic ceritfied by dell to work on there computers and the PS3 has better specs, just give it time just as we gave 360 time because to be honest launch 360 games werent great graphical masterpieces like u fanboys say. And u say u spent $400 on ur system right than add xbox live for a year and than add buying the new hddvd drive thats about $550? plus xbox live will be connected for a couple years if ur really that hardcore so in the long run its even more than the cost of a ps3.

    Hey Seabreed, when did Crysis jump from PC-exclusive to 360 exclusive?

    And the Lost Planet rumor came from 1up.com, and from the game's creator, saying they "would try to keep it exclusive, but if the Japanese market wants it bad enough, they will port it".
