A$25 million worth of PS3 gear sold in Australia since launch

A$25 million ($20 million) worth of PS3 consoles, games, and accessories sold in Australia since launch; console won't break Wii's record of fastest selling by units.

The crowds may have been quiet at midnight launch events last week, but Sony's PlayStation 3 still seems to have made an impact on Australian consumers over the weekend--a A$25 million impact, to be precise.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has told GameSpot AU that more than A$25 million worth of PS3 hardware, games, and accessories have been sold in the three days since the console's launch last Friday, March 23. SCEA had previously stated that A$20 million worth of PS3 gear had been preordered prior to launch.

The PS3 looks unlikely to break Australian records when it comes to fastest-selling console by units sold, however. While SCEA has not disclosed the exact number, a spokesman did confirm to GameSpot AU that the number of PS3s sold so far has "exceeded the previously published preorder number of 20,000 units."

At more than 20,000 units in the first three days, the PS3 looks unlikely to challenge the Nintendo Wii for the title of fastest seller in Australia. Figures from data trackers GfK Australia show that the Wii sold 32,901 units in its first four days after launch. The previous record holder was the Xbox 360, which sold 30,421 units in its first four days of availability. Before the 360, Sony's PSP was king with 27,055 units sold in the first four days. While the PS3 won't break the Wii's record, Sony's console does have the disadvantage of being more than double the price of the Wii in Australia. The PS3 retails for A$999.95 ($805), while Wiis will set consumers back A$399.95 ($322). The top Xbox 360 bundle costs A$649.95 ($523) in Australia.

Sony's A$25 million haul for the PS3 also falls short of Microsoft's take for the Xbox 360 when it was first released in Australia last year. At the time, Microsoft stated that it had sold between A$30 and A$40 million worth of consoles and games at launch. The Xbox 360 was released in Australia on March 23, 2006--exactly one year before the PS3.

    i think sony has taken an irreversable dent in its reputation, people just don't seem to be swayed. even i, a once ardent sony fan have been sorely dissapointed by draw back after drawback. i dont think sony willl go bankrupt, they are still major players and distributers of other goods, they'll just have to seriously rethink their strategy in order to better market their games.

    Looks like the PS3 flopped even harder. There is a difference though. The XBox 360 was sold out in Australia, while the PS3 still has over almost 30,000 PS3 still on retail shelves in Australia. As I said previously, I don't think they'll sell more then 350,000 PS3 in the first month in Europe region.

    I doubt they sold that much considering most stores still have their launch stock still gathering dust on the shelves almost a week after launch!!!

    Even "Morrisons" supermarket chain are selling PS3 games £5 ($9) cheaper then 360 games to try and get people buying the games.

    Obviously at $999.95 Australia and only $600 USD 25 million will sound like alot. You can cut that by 2/5 and you're left with (what should have been) 15 million USD (had Sony not been completely ripping Australians a new one). Gosh for the equivalent of $805 I know where to get a kicking motherboard, quad core, 4 gig ram, 320 gig memory, sick video card, sick case, 1000 watt PS and fan, and a blu-ray dvd-rw. I guess people don't know how to build PC's in Aus. though...

    Sony just break UK record there. It is killing M$, this multi-dimension strategy, PS2 low end Mass Market; PS3 high end-HD market and PSP mobile market. M$ have Xbox360 and PC vista but vista is going to be problem. I respect M$ for max their advantages, did their best. Unless Sony screw up, I can't any change for a foreseeable future

    Not entirely true... There are things ps3 offers which the xbox360 does not... And some of the things 360 offers is horrible compared to the PS3 version...
    HD movies.. for instance.. Check out the general quality test for the blu-ray player in ps3, and the buyable HD DVD drive for 360.. You can hardly call it.. "hd" :-) + horrible sound =)

    Just because I have to gush - Just got myself a PS3 (Got it in Singapore since I was over there. PS3+HDMI cable+Resistance = appx $750 AU)

    And its awesome. The interface and use of it is so easy it could have been an Apple product - which is, to my mind, high praise.

    To satisfy the 360 fans though, I haven't used a 360 much. They may be awesome too. But from what I've seen the PS3 is great.

    Everyone should win lotto and go buy one of each :-)

    The price of the technology will pay off in the long run when XBox goes through about two or three more systems and Sony's still on the PS3, plus what do you XBox people care about price? You pay extra for online and HD DVD (Which the $400 price of an XBox plus $200 HD DVD= the PS3 price $600), Playstations already got that set up plus a whole lot more.

    frogiggy323: That will not happen. 360 is a better, all around deal than the PS3. Sony's new machine offers nothing that is needed that 360 doesn't already cover. Too little, too late. I feel bad for those who opt for a system just because of a popular brand name, while being coaxed into paying outrageous amounts for nothing special (e.g., PS3). For shame!

    You know its so strange on Gamespot, they always start the headlines with good PS3 headlines and then always find a way to go biased toward 360. Whats even funnier is that gamespot doesn't even mention how much the Wii hauled in but instead tells how much the 360 takes in. For once I would love to start an article about the 360 and then be informed the PS3 did something better.

    Uh not sure how this is a bad thing. It'd be crazy if the PS3 which was the last console to be release in Australia sold more than it's competitors. Also the PS3 isn't something that you just go and buy, I know like 5 friends who are saving for a PS3, who buys a console at launch anyways, most people wait...

    Roushrsh Then your argument really doesn't mean much. Sony would be losing ridiculously large amounts of money doing that. You have to remember that price is one of the three points as to whether a product is good or not.

    Buying a PS3 for me would have been for the same reason as when i bought a PS2, just for particular games like Final Fantasy etc. i'm a PC gamer.

    pfff the numbers for the xbox cant be counted as it was the first "next gen" thing out so it had no competition for a year, if it launched at the same time as the ps3 or if the roles were reversed (xbox out a year later) then the xbox wouldnt have sold half as well

    sony fan boys should just accept the truth there system sucks, sure it has a cell chip but that cant be maxed because of it 256 mb of ram compared to the triple core with 512mb of ram THIS EVENS OUT the power so theres no diffrence accept the fact we have great games and also they have all yall games..............HAHAHAH stop crying and take that overpriced grill back to the store. also the stats cant be inflated idiot just TRUTH. the fans are as dulusional as the execs at $ony.....

    When I said same price, I never said lowering costs , therefor keeping the hardware exactly the same, of course it'll make them lose ALOT more , thats why its right now 600 dollars instead of 250.
