Koei unites Dynasty, Samurai Warriors

Orochi Warriors to join two ancient-Asian action strategy series on 360 and PS2 on September 18.

Last month, Koei announced it would be bringing its mind-melting amalgamation of Dynasty Warriors and Namco Bandai's Mobile Suit Gundam to US shores. Adding another car to its synergistic crossover train, the publisher today announced it would be melding its two Warriors franchises into a single epic showdown, dubbed Warriors Orochi.

Koei's in-house studio Omega Force develops the Dynasty Warrior and Samurai Warrior games, so it will naturally be tasked with bringing the two together in Warriors Orochi. Its newest action strategy game will pull 77 playable characters from the other two series, and players will be able to form three-character squads to do battle with. Omega Force will also be adding a new weapon infusion mechanic into the mix, which lets players combine the attributes of various weapons to unleash more powerful attacks.

Themselves spin-offs of Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, both Warriors franchises focus on empire management and expansion in medieval Asia. Dynasty Warriors is set in ancient China, while Samurai Warriors is set in feudal Japan. The games also incorporate button-mashing-style gameplay, where players assume the role of legendary generals and play out decisive historical events or battles.

Warriors Orochi has been rated T for Teen and is slated to ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 on September 18.

I hope they keep the Japanese dialogue option in this game. The lack of it in all of the recent games (most notably on the X-box 360 versions) is what's kept me from buying any game after Dynasty Warriors 5 for the original X-box, and Samurai Warriors 1, also for the original X-box.

I wouldn't mind -so- much if the english voice actors they got weren't so bad, but they range from mediocre to outright TERRIBLE, especially the ones in Samurai Warriors 2: Empires.

Thank You, Koei. The fans have been waiting for something like this.

Hey, If Capcom can take on SNK, why not Sima Yi vs Shingen Takeda?

This looks really cool. I've always been split between the two series, for some reason. So split that I couldn't bring myself to buy either. Which Asian beat-em-up should I pick, I wondered. With this installment, I don't even have to worry about it! As long as the execution is sound, I might just have to buy this.

    77?
    thats f#cking amazing imo.
2d fighters have waht maybe 50 max.
besides for those who dont buy sw2 or dw6 its a bargain.

I honeslty think I'll pass on this one.
those of you who look for improvements are better of waiting for DW6 or SW3. this is just for those who want to pit the Ro3k forces against the forces of japan. not much else to be had in this game...more characters to be blunt.

Ummm all of Koei's games are based on fiction. People arguing historical accuracy with magic spears is lol.

  • Prime05

    Posted Jun 21, 2007 8:29 am PT

Who cares about historical accuracy!?! It's a friggin game! Historically you couldn't find roasted turkeys throughout a battlefield to cure sword, pike, and arrow wounds. Historically you could not unleash a musou attack on a crowd of soldiers surrounding your a$$ trying to kill you. Historically nobody has killed 1000 people with a mace in half an hour. Let it go already! It's a hack n' slash video game.

  • A5H19

    Posted Jun 21, 2007 7:56 am PT

This would historically make no sense. You guys do know that the events in Dynasty Warriors actually did take place a really long time ago, right?

  • HardCor1981

    Posted Jun 21, 2007 6:36 am PT

Booo! Why no PS3 release? Oh well, if I buy this game at least it will be cheaper than if it came out for PS3. There's always a silver lining.

"mrbean667: Wow. Hope it will harness the power of the 360 and PS3, unlike SW2."

Can't see any mention of the PS3 in the article.
This sounds too much like a duff PS2 game getting a quick port and polish to 360 and we saw how sucessful that was with Spiderman 3.

    Cool though.

I don't have an X360, and my PS2 is broken. Haha... *cries*
Anyway, my friend has an X360, and I hope the graphics and framerate are going to be better, and hopefully, the great "fog" and "magical appearences" will be gone. And the AI. the AI too.

Yukimura and Zhao Yun, Lu Bu and Tadakatsu Honda. I'm speechless with awe and anticipation. Screw historical accuracy at the moment, this is a-w-e-s-o-m-e

  • blindsided82

    Posted Jun 20, 2007 8:51 pm PT

Actually, by doing this they could do somewhat historically accurate. China did try invading Japan at one point. Sure, some of the generals present would not be very accurate to history, but the point of them two clashing is historical.

Love the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises, I'm quite hyped for this game. But here's to hoping they put a little more effort into this unique combination than they did for their previous installments. As far as what I hope to see: improved A.I., better graphics, more variety in the characters and musou attacks.

@ Lazygamer01 that's probably the exact reason why they're bringing the two series together. anyway this will be awesome and Im probably gonna get it, the only question is when, there are soooo many other amazing games coming out this fall.

Quote: Lazygamer01 "ALL THESE GAMES ARE THE FRIGGIN SAME!!! WHY DO THEY EVEN BOTHER!?!?!"

I can say that all traditional sports games are the same, but people by them every year anyway. Koei games offer different content, using similar meachanics for each game. You don't get much variance in traditional sports games, but they get much praise anyway. It's a good idea to combine both series, as long as new content is added.

There's alot of potential to the merger - however my wishlist is the re-launch of Koei's classic game like Uncharted Water, Nobunaga Ambition, etc
