Sierra fires up Spyro sequel

Second installment in Sierra's reimagined baby-dragon action adventure trilogy takes flight this fall on Wii, PS2, DS, GBA, and mobile platforms.

As the title of last year's The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning suggests, Sierra Entertainment departed from previous Spyro games to breathe a flame-licked breath of fresh air into the aging series. Today the publisher announced a second installment in what it is now calling the "Spyro Trilogy." Titled The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, the new game will arrive on several platforms this fall.

Spyro's latest adventure will again focus on kid-friendly, action-oriented gameplay. Evidently training quite hard in his time off, the cute purple dragon will pack new breath attacks, elemental melee moves, and fury attacks, as well as an all-new ability to rip the very fabric of time. With the arrival of the Ape King in the Temple of Souls, Spyro must again take flight to save dragonkind from the evil invaders.

Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Bumblebee Flies Anyway) and Gary Oldman (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Dead Fish) will reprise their voice-acting roles as the titular hero and his faithful mentor, Ignitus.

Krome Studios will develop The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for the Wii and PlayStation 2, while Amaze Entertainment will handle development on the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. A mobile version developed by Vivendi Games Mobile will also be available in North America and Europe. The game has not yet been rated or priced.

Insomniac didn't sell the licence, they never owned it; Universal always owned the rights to Spyro, and just let Insomniac develop the games (I asked them about that, that's what they told me). I agree, the series has never been the same since it left Insomniac's capable hands. EtD suck more than anything in the world, HT was actually good, but not up to snuff, and ANB was too different. I think they just need to let Spyro rest in peace, or give it back to the people who know what they're doing.

I wish Sierra would make another Homeworld sequel, now that'd be awesome.

Ugh. As much as I love my PS2 I hope how soon it dies so companies will stop making cheapo ports to the Wii for a quick buck and actually make full-fledged Wii games from the ground up.

Yep, I agree with redgopher Spyro lost it's "flame" (lol) when Insomniac sold the franchise. The last Spyro game was terrible. Spyro 3 on PS was awsome.

Crash and spyro should have ended at the playstaion1. The new devs are making crap games and just milking the franchises. Anything after the playstation1 versions aren't the same games to me.

Everything started to turn downhill when insomniac (or NaughtyDog) lost the Spyro series.

HOW MUCH LONGER MUST SPYRO CONTINUE TO SUFFER? JUST LET HIM DIE A PEACEFUL DEATH ALREADY!!!

Spyro was good when Insomniac made the games. Now I just don't know. One things for sure, I'm glad that Spyro is in Sierra's hands now. Enter the Dragonfly was absolutely disgusting.

Oh yeah, because insomniac really wants Spyro. Sad, what they have done with the series. Atleast they have managed to pass terrible territory and enter the stage of mediocre. Crash also

Its always fun playing the first three Spyro games, in fact i have all three in collectors edition.
Well i don't like the step they have taken into fighting from good old fashion platforming!

I played a new beginning. It wasn't that bad, buy not enough platforming and a bit too much boring combat. The voice actors, theme, and story are really cool though. They should focus a little bit more on the game though.

They really need to give Spyro back to Insomniac games to save the franchise. In others hands Spyro has become quiet terrible.

Indeed--you'd think they'd have learned by now that when you take games like these and have someone other than the original developers make titles, they increasingly suck. Both Spyro and Crash are fine examples of this--both franchises have been in a downward spiral into the toilet since Insomniac and Naughty Dog gave them up--the first two PS2 Spyro games are *tolerable* at best, and nowhere near the overall quality of the original PS1 set. I won't even touch 'A New Beginning'. Crash got to start its slide a bit earlier, with Crash Bash on the PS1. Gah. The PS2 Crash platformers and CTR sequel are mediocre at best. Of course, if you want another fine example of a similar trend, there's the latest Sonic stuff...

Come to think of it--other than the portable remakes of the older games, when was the last time we saw a Mario *platformer*? Sunshine?

I absolutely loved Spyro when the original game first came out. I'm hoping and praying that they can successfully recreate that magic in this one, because I'm not convinced that there isn't any spark left in his eyes as long as developers are willing to search for it.

The last Spyro game introduced my little sister to video games. Now she plays all sorts of games and some of that money that was going into toy ponys, barbies and various trinkets now go to the video game industry. She loves smash bros, mario party, and spyro. She is only seven years old. So there is really no need to complain. Spyro is a great entry level game for kids. That's all it's supposed to be. I don't understand why any of you would complain that a game about a tiny cute dragon doesn't meet your high standards. That's like complaining that a kids meal doesn't meet your nutritional needs. . . DUH!

Maybe if they stopped looking at every character as a "product" (read "cow") to be milked until its udders fell off maybe they`d have better sales and games. The original Spyro was great and a good bit of family fun. But because people liked the character they had to put out games more often than Tony Hawk and be on everything from TV to your underpants.(just like a certain Lara...) Maybe they`ll learn a thing or two from Tomb Raider Legend, but I doubt it.
