PS3 "bonus" bundle offer to end on August 31 in Australia

Recently released A$999.95 ($853) PS3 bundle offer to end in less than a month in Australia; no word yet on replacement offering.

The PlayStation 3 "starter pack" offer--which sees a 60GB PS3 bundled with two controllers and two games in PAL territories--will end in Australia on August 31, less than a month after it was first launched locally.

At this year's E3, Sony made a big splash about cutting the price on the 60GB model of the PlayStation 3, as well as the introduction of a new 80GB model to the North American market. Unfortunately for those in Europe and Australia, the price cut was restricted to the US only; instead of a reduction, gamers in PAL territories were given a new starter pack. That wasn't the end of it, however, because less than a day later, Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed that the 60GB PS3 was, in actuality, no longer in production, and that the 80GB PS3 would soon be the only SKU on offer in the US. This left PAL gamers up in the air about exactly how long the starter pack would be available, and when or if the 80GB model would soon supersede it in their territories.

A marketing e-mail sent to members of PlayStation's official web site in Australia over the weekend gave out some hints on the fate of the 60GB PS3. The e-mail--which was plugging the local availability of the starter pack--contained some extra details in the fine print, namely that that offer would "end on August 31 (or earlier, while stocks last)." In Australia, the PS3 Starter Pack only became available on August 2, and retails for A$999.95. The pack includes MotorStorm and Resistance: Fall of Man as the two bundled games. The same pack is available in the UK/Europe for £425/599 euro.

Local Sony reps confirmed that the date details in the e-mail were correct, but declined to elaborate on what would replace the current starter pack offer, come the end of August.

    Okay, reading through a good portion, all I see is a bunch of people whining about the same redundancies. People complained about the Xbox when it came out having a hard drive built in, causing a mass over-pricing. Guess what? It was a revolutionary idea, last I checked. The Blu-ray is not something that is going to be immediately positive, not exactly a quick fix for the money you spend on the PS3. Watch, in a year or so, people whining about the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 are going to be saying that it's wonderful. It's the NEXT generation format. When everybody gets their hands on NEXT generation technology (HDTVs) then it will be loved by all. It allows for companies to do more without worrying about compression. In no way does it make the PS3 better than the 360. Stop looking at what's worse/better. There isn't a system that's worse or better. Be overjoyed to be a gamer folks. You get to have a choice these days. Remember back with the SNES and Genesis? Was mostly a no brainer. The competition is what's making this industry grow. Granted, Sony is making a bit of a dick move from pulling the 60GB PS3's off production. They didn't learn from the first time I suppose. Hopefully they will withdraw that statement, allowing those who don't want to spend an arm and a leg to buy a PS3 to actually be able to buy one. *shrugs* Either way, I honestly don't see a wrong choice between PS3 and 360. Wait until PS3 has marked it's proving grounds more, which it already is showing. Last year, what could you claim was a great title for the 360? I think Gears was it, last I checked. So, give it time for games yet, it's only breaching into it's second generation, this goes for graphics too. Noticably better, I believe the last competition mark said on Gamespot, no? So, everyone just chill your mental and verbal diarrhea, and just wait and see what happens. If you have to whine about something, whine about the right thing. The fact that Sony is screwing people over with the 60GB price drop, then pulling it off production. THAT'S the only real crime here. My thumbs go up for MS though, price drops FTW

    i think the starter pack should come to america. people wouldnt complain about the price if they got two games and controllers. that hasnt happened since the NES . remember getting a nintendo with two controllers, a lightgun, super mario and duckhunt (it was like christmas on christmas). whose idea was it anyway to stop giving people a game with there system anyway. or they should at least put a bunch of playable demos and casual games and an extra controller. they need to leverage the price with some sort of value added on the gaming end if the want parents to buy it for their kids.

You guys bringing this battle here make it a difficult time for people who want to know what others have to say about this subject and others. I like the vs. but not in these topics.

    This seems like a faze out in my opinion, however Sony only mentioned an end to the two games, extra controller bundle. Maybe 80GB is the way to go, however, you could easily fit your own 160GB HDD for pretty cheap if you want the extra space XD

    Well, Sony are certainly off to a great 'starter' by playing with our heads. If they are thinking of changing this "value" thing for a price drop instead, then that's the only positive reason I'll accept. Else, they are simply screwing with us.

    I see this argument a lot from Xbox fans, but it is completely flawed. Why? When you're talking compression with games, you're talking about lossy compression of textures and audio. "Lossy" means that you forfeit quality in exchange for a smaller size - a common example of this is JPEG compression. Some of this is OK - when you're running through a city in an FPS, how much time are you going to spend studying the wall textures? But if you're suggesting you can take a game full of textures/audio that I imagine will already be compressed, and then compress that down another 60 or 70% and have it still look like a high-def, next generation game then you're fooling yourself. Do some reading about compression. There's been a lot of advances, but all lossless compression is still highly inefficient, and lossy compression makes a massive difference to quality once you start talking about ratios like 7:1.

    While I know many are lothe to admit it, Blu-ray was a wise choice for something that they're selling on it's high definition capabilities. DVD is not a high def format - it just doesn't have the capacity. Assuming Killzone 2 has consistant quality throughout equivillent to the footage from E3 (and has a reasonable length/featureset), you absolutely could not put it on a DVD or two and have it be the same game.

    With that complete off-topic rant done (sorry - needed to get that said), I'm actually quite pleased about this development. Everyone agreed that adding value is not the same as lowering the price, and that what the PS3 needed was a lower price. Perhaps we're about to see that happen? I would certainly hope so, because the other alternatives are pretty much retail suicide.

    I would just reitterate Grene1's point since I believe it is largely correct.

    To struvi: there is exclusive downloadable content on the X360 version so your wrong there. And it is believed that the PS3 version is the harder to develop for from what I have heard. to jboonzaier: You shouldn't post the same thing so much, spam just makes people think your point is biased and flamed by fanboyism.

    to Sycosi: Grende1 was pointing out that the blue ray didn't improve graphics, I admit more storage space allows for that but you make some errenous assertions yourself, Killzone 2 could easily be on 2 discs or using better compression technology (which the 360 has due to XNA) the file size's would be reduced and with some effort could possibly be put on a single disc (possibly). The 360 is not fundamentally flawed, thats like saying a copy of Halo 3 is flawed because the legendary version has more to offer or that the Wii is fundamentally flawed because it doesn't have a laser cannon to kill thieves (and since it sells so well it'd need one XD). MS released another SKU after two years, can't be anything like Sony's 80 gb model that came out only a year later can it, or the 20gb which had reduced features and was ultimately canned. these stuff may add up but the difference is MS doesn't force them on you like Sony does, I don't have a HDTV so I would have been fine with the 20gb model but then they decided that wasn't good enough. Sounds like you raised your blood pressure yourself, we're not debating your life. Don't blast Grende1 for being biased and then be biased yourself, the hypocricy shows.

    uhhh grende1 Just 1 thing... who the hell told you GTAIV was going to have extra content??? I dont know if you heard But rockstar is having trouble developing the game for the xbox and you think its going to add extra content... besides this game is heavy as hell and the xbox's dvd9 discs are already stuffed with information in any case the ps3 would have extra content but i doubt it

    Grende1 you need to calm down there! You're not exactly an anti-fanboy either as your rant is totally pro 360! Your statement is actually littered with errors, far to numerous to mention but one being the Blu-Ray disc issue, 50gig or 9gig which will be 'able' to hold more data for improved graphics and sound? Killzone 2 wouldn't be transferable to the 360 as the discs are to small. This was one of many mistakes you made. Whilst the Ps3 is expensive the 360 is fundamentally flawed with terrible hardware and shortcuts. No HDMI output or HD player as standard is very poor, essential add on's like battery packs, XBL gold, WiFi connectors, bigger hard drives etc all add up. The fact that MS has to release ANOTHER 360 within 2 years with a HDMI out and larger hard drive for £330-$660 is a disgraceful rip off. You are an anti Ps3 person who wants to moan about the Ps3 given any chance you can. The 360 is faultless and the Ps3 is just a rubbish Blu-Ray player. Lets see after 2 years of the Ps3 being out, like the 360, what its status is like. Even if it was £200-$400 with major exclusives and a HUGE back catalogue you'd still complain that the 360 was better because you're one-sided and bias. Now thats a fact. I love my 360, Wii and Ps3 oh and my life too. After all this is a games console you're raising your blood pressure over! This is all about preference. I prefer the Ps3 over the Wii and 360 currently. Simple. Nothing or no-one will change my mind.

    Dude, defensive much? I do believe that I said nothing against you or your console. I really am genuinely happy for you that you like the PS3. However, to me, game consoles dont need all those extra features you were bragging about. The PS3 IS great at doing a lot of things. However, Sony has upped the price of their console and lessened the amount of time they could have been spending on game development by devoting so much of it on development of other media features.

    If you don't mind paying extra for that stuff on your game console, great. Enjoy. But I, and the people you're getting so frustrated with on here, do.

    You're justifying your purchase for reasons we don't care about, and you're doing it poorly. I'm not gonna pay "axtra money" to have my console double as a linux box under my TV. That, my good boy, is absurd.

    Every 360 fan n some of the ppl dat writte for these sites seem to forget that the 360 had a one n a half years head start. so obviously da games will look slightly better then da ps3 versions n som developers will ave problems with programming at the. Da 360 "fanboys" (lol) all seam to omitt dat the firs gen 360 games werent all dat eighter. U all need to chill for som time n give da ps3 time 2 shine. N sony never promoted da console as a bluray player bt they always stated it as 1 of the fearyres n some what a justification for da price which btw here in da uk is just affordable.

    NinjaMunkey01 - You pretty much sum everything that is wrong with Sony fanboy thinking. Let's start with Bluray. It's a frickin's storage device. It does NOTHING for graphics. Name ONE SINGLE game on Bluray that is longer, has better graphics, and is more immersive. You can't, because there are none. The 360 versions (on DVD9) of multiplatform games have outperformed their PS3 counterparts nearly every time. The only two exceptions (Fight Night and Oblivion) barely did it and they had nearly a year extra in development time. All the rest, the 360 version is hands down better (check every multiplatform gaming site if you don't believe me). As for the games. Let's compare the big differences this fall with the bigger titles. 360: Halo3, Mass Effect, Virtua Fighter (exclusive online play), COD4 (exclusive MP BETA), Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, PGR4. PS3: Lair, Heavenly Sword, UT3 (6 weeks exclusivity), Little Big Planet (maybe). This is ignoring that multiplatform titles have so far looked and run better on the 360. And no, Halo does not have a jumpy framerate. By saying so it shows you obviously haven't played any of the series. How about for spring? 360: Too Human, Splinter Cell: Conviction, GTA IV (exclusive content), Halo Wars. PS3: MGS4 and ?. As for online: Sure the PSN is free, but it sucks. Everyone but the staunchest of Sony fanboys agrees that LIVE completely dominates PSN. So, which would you rather have, a turd sandwich for free or a steak dinner for a reasonable fee? $4.17 per month is hardly pricey. By the way, the 360 is getting a real price cut, instead of Sony's 'bait and switch' 6 week fire sale. And no, Sony wanted a Bluray player first, console second. Sony cares more about winning the movie format war than the console war and it shows with their lack of interest in retaining gaming exclusives, their forced high price point, and the only separating feature for their unit is something that does NOTHING for gaming but drives the console price up $200 more than the competition. Am I saying the PS3 sucks? Not at all, but it's a far cry from what it was hyped to be and your arguments hold little water. Unfortunately, until the PS3 actually starts getting purchased by consumers, stops getting outperformed by the 360, starts getting a game line up on store shelves that competes with the 360 instead of all of these promised games that may or may not release in 2008, and stops getting promoted solely by deception and smoke, the 360 fanboys are going to have all the cannon fodder.     wow so many people bashing the ps3. they are just jelous that we have a cconsole that dosent freeze every half hour. I thought about which console I wanted the most. and yes I had to save up that little bit longer but I feel that MY choice was the best. there is a great lineup coming and all the 3609 has is halo. lol. lets all get excited about a game that never fails to have a jumpy framerate. the reason people muct like it so much is because it is the only game that they can complete it is so easy! all the games I wanted are on the ps3. duh sony obviously wanted it to be a console first and formost people it is just that they werte clever enough to add extras. good extras which to me justifies the price. yes 360 fanboys you get excited about games that will look superior on the ps3 and you get excited about your halo. now I am going to play REAL games with difficulty and fun. all with free online play. I pity the fact that you will have to pay for online play for 6, maybe 7 years before the next console comes out. while I will spend my money on great games coming out for the ps3. sony has never failed me. you pay for quality.

    remember 360's e3 conference BOOOOOORING! ps3's confrence was good. all the games I want and something that you will never get because your console cant play them Lair, warhawk and little big planet. blue-ray = bigger, longer, better graphics and more imersive. : )

    I say: Most of the ones you said are only PS3 but most backwards compatible games look better on the 360 as graphical comparisons have shown. Ninja Gaiden is an remake of an old game and we'll be getting Ninja gaiden 2 eventually, we have godfather and oblivion. And whats the point in saying all the Xbox FPS are Halo rips when your acting like R:FoM and Killzone 2 are so good? Souns like you just like any big release game for the PS3 so your just acting like a fanboy again.

    dereky I agree, as a Former PS2 owner and a PS3 owner I think a I was a bad mistake to Include Blu-ray. When the PS2 came out Dvd was a good option that did not inflate the price astronomically and the any TV could make use of it. The PS3, I have one and I have a HD TV (50'' Samsung) and its good for me, but my friends can afford it not even at $500. Four of my friends have 360s and one friend just got a core unit (which I gave him my 20G HDD, Since I bought the 120G HDD) . They where all PS2 Gamers and only of them had and Xbox. None of them have HD TVs. See the picture here, Sony is using the PS3 to push Blu-ray and USING us Playstation fans to do it. Some are even put off by it.

    I Have yet to buy a Blu-ray disk to this day ( I only rent them on netflix).

    people need to understand the ps3 sytems IS NOT a gaming system. the ps3 is a BLU-RAY player that happens to play games. to the person who states that paying 1grand for a ps3 with two crap games, yes Fall of Men is crap, is targeted for the high rollers.... ?..... even people with money don't wanna pay that much for a ps3. besides high-rollers should already have a blu-ray player why would they need the ps3? ps3 fanboys need to quite being jaded. the ONLY system delivering the goods is Xbox360. yeah you have to buy HD peripheral but its still cheaper than the Aussi bundle. and are we forgetting we want a GAMING SYSTEM, not some machine that can let you browse the interweb and play blu-ray discs. we have computers for that type of stuff. xbox is the one system that has its priorities straight. RRD, willing to fix it for up to 3yrs after purchase, which shows they are in tune with the gamers. plus no one is pumping out quality games and non-stop downloadable content like Xbox 360/Xbox Live. bang for the buck: buy a 360 elite when the price drop comes this shopping season.

    Again, i dont understand why people bash the PS3 for being a multi-dimensional entertainment device, yet they praise the I-Phone for being able to do more than make phone calls.     Why does sony insist on rasing the price of the Ps3? They sould look at wii sales and ask what did we do wrong.I'll tell you what, they added a useless stuff thats what. I BUY A CONSOLE TO PLAY GAMES NOT MOVIES! In fact, I don't even care about music playing i have a ipod that can do that for me. I have a dvd player that can, OMG, play movies! Cool right. I have a computer to go on the internet with. I could care less about the hard drive or the Wi-Fi because you need a cable to play games anyway. Give me 20 gigs and im ok. Blu ray has how many players sold, 3.9 million. Thats about the same as how many ps3's are sold. All because you are forced to buy it that way. They could have done a Microsoft and sold it as a add on if any one wants it. The price of the Ps3 could have been $300 maybe even $200 with that stuff removed, but it's too late now for sony. Too many have been sold and it will always be know as another "Sony Screw".

Umm... actually we have rfom - oblivion - the godfather.. motorstorm.... ninjagadan amongst others... and others... We have games your just holding on that idea cuzz the system u bought u know is broken and inferior.. and in about this time next year your mouth will be shut... because by then the 360 will be a dead dog.. halo can only carry u so far.. after that.. all the copy fps's will be dead.. no really cares for those anyway..     Less than a friggin' month Sony? I know you're in a hurry to catch up with the Wii and 360, but dang. Do you think you could actually be honest for once?

    yeah.. tehre write.. most of those games aint really internetsing.. halo and too human.. besides that.. there all halo copy fps.. thats about it...

    I'd rather pay money for something that plays games.... so the PS3 was out the question... and will be until there is ONE that makes it worth me bothering with... nothing coming yet.... nope nothing for at least a year.

    Tdogg.. p.. people whould rather pay more money for somthing that works.. then less for somthing that dies in a year... u have a 1 in 3 chances of buying a defectivie xbox... thats the worst form of design ive ever seen.. who wants to buy an xbox.. my guess is.. that most of the xbox fans have already boguth one.. and thats all that will..

    the austrailians are paying roughly 850 us dollars 4 this starter pack as they use aussie dollars also sony has something big comining for the pal ps3 which is being announced at leipzg 23 to 26 august. just as the starter pack ends.

    They'll probably only be one or two, but they'll only have been out 6 months as they continue to drop each model within 9 months of its release.
