Street Fighter IV 'more than a year away'

The latest chapter in the popular beat-'em-up series isn't coming anytime soon, warns Capcom.

SFIV Trailer

Sorry, kids--this game is a ways off.

Yesterday, a teaser trailer appeared on Capcom's Web site for a new addition to the Street Fighter series. Around 10 years after Street Fighter III: The New Generation slammed into arcades, the video announced that a sequel--Street Fighter IV--would finally be coming.

At the Capcom Gamer's Day in London, Capcom's European head of communications Ben LeRougetel also showed the media ensemble crammed into the cinema at the Courthouse Hotel Kempinski the trailer, which was met with gasps of surprise and rapturous applause.

Introducing the short teaser, LeRougetel said that there was not a lot he could say yet about the title. He told the audience, "Development on this project has only just started, so its release will be more than a year away."

He also added that platforms had also not yet been decided for Street Fighter IV. GameSpot will bring you more news on this exciting development as soon as it becomes available.

I am prety sure the game will be out on all major consoles... to draw all fanns out, old and new. The game graphics are going to be 3D but game play will be 2D(the best of both worlds) I saw some close ups during combos, and Heavy blows, hope they stick to that. Looked GREAT!!!

....my prayers have been answered. Just hopefully they'll keep the classic 2D thing, and not try to switch to some Tekken-style system.

Much as I love Sf, its going to be hard to forget about this now. im just going to be anticipating it for the next year, kinda wish they waited to tease us.

markevens, you're right, the trailer seemed pre-rendered. The effect it had on me, though, was that it gave me the feeling that this would be ahead of the competition in visual style while having fast-paced gameplay. This is what they first did, its good if their still trying to do that--but I hope they also pay heed to the Miyamotos and Kojimas in that progress in game production is not only graphics but intelligent mechanics, design, and approach.

3D would be really fine to be honest, long as they keep it simple moves and dont do what Mortal Kombat did to their games by givin the fighters 10 different styles and having 20 button combos took the fun out of it really

Man, I've been praying to Capcoms God for years and finally my wish comes true. I mean I've played SF all my childhood and I missed it all this years. And lets be honest, for me Mortal Kombat, Tekken and SoulCalibur aren't even compared to STREET FIGHTER!!! Please Gods, don't let Capcom screw this up, I promise I'll quit peeing over the X-Boxes in the stores >)

It's probably gonna be next-gen...*sigh*.... They had better make it 2-D, or else the entire franchise is screwed. Anyone remember SF EX? Ha, neither do I... Hmm..now that I think about it, the trailer looked kinda like a more realistic Okami...Hm....

I was wondering about this after watching the trailer. It didn't seem that the trailer was of game play, more like a prerendered clip. If it was prerendered, then that would indicate that the game was a far way off, so far off that they didn't have anything worth showing yet. This is fine by me. This game got me in the arcades in the 90's, and I am sure Capcom will treat one of it's most treasured properties with the attention and innovation it deserves.

I got lost in the early 90's with the spin-offs of Street Fighter 2. If you count every single SF game, this could actually be Street Fighter 64

"So, beat-em-up isn't an incorrect way of describing a one on one fighter. It just depends where you are from."

Makes me glad I'm one of the few British people that call Fighting Games (a la Street Fighter, KoF) 'fighting games' and Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, etc. 'Beat 'Em Ups'..

Seriously. Not hard to get the two distinguished.

    "Oh, and I hope it's 3-D too"

No. Just no. Street Fighter isn't Street Fighter unless it's in 2-D. Look at how popular SFII, III and Alpha were, and then look at SF:EX. Not going to happen.

Since it took Capcom THIS long to count to 4 in this Legendary franchise I'm quite sure it will be worth it. Let's face it, every fighting game owes it's existence and the given popularity of the genre to Street Fighter, especially SF2. They will work on it and when it releases, it will kick serious @$$!!! Now as far as which platform it will be on, Capcom will bend over every which way they'll have to just to make sure this game will reach the masses, 360, PS3 and yes....even the Wii, although throwing imaginary fireballs in my living room is not my cup of tea LOL, but the Wii owners will be happy.

Oh, and I hope it's 3-D too...a smooth, TRUE 3-D, not that EX crap. Granted it was good for what it was, but against Tekken and Soul Calibur, no contest.

It will most likely be anotther Lindbergh arcade game.

Hmm, interesting. That looked more like an animated short by some media director rather than a game teaser. Doesnt really provide us with any evidence of what the game will be like. However, the logo looks pretty cool.

I'm not surprised. This is Capcom, the people who tease us with Resident Evil game trailers for a couple of years before they are released. Not that I'm really complaining since the games are done right.

    Posted Oct 22, 2007 7:41 am PT

That's bad news indeed. I'll have to settle for VF5 on the Xbox 360 then in order to keep my urge for beat-em-ups in place then.

so what can they possibly do to a game in a year that already hasn't been done? Graphics, sound, bug hunting?

  • GrimBee

    Posted Oct 22, 2007 4:39 am PT

Well. I've pitched my tent outside my local gamestation already The early bird catches the worm, the lazy bird catches the turd lol

As for the "beat-em-up" and "fighting-game" confusion. Emma Boyes is from the UK, and alot of people in the UK (including me) generalize fighting games as "beat-em-ups".

Streets of rage style games are usually either called "brawlers" or "side scrolling beat-em-ups". FPS games, side-scolling shooters First person adventures... they are usually known as "shoot-em-ups" over here.
But because there are more genres in "shoot-em-ups" the FPS name has stuck on. Namely because of Halo's popularity, defining what an FPS is has been important over the years.. for example, Halo is one of the biggest console "FPS" titles.

Beat-em-ups over here haven't quite been so diverse or hit the media as hard as FPS games. Kinda like how an expansive environment is usually seen as a "GTA-style game".

So, beat-em-up isn't an incorrect way of describing a one on one fighter. It just depends where you are from.

I believe Street Fighter IV may be released first for SEGA's Lindbergh arcade machine and then possibly another Sega console.

    @sexydaniboy:

I think the part where it says they haven't decided on a platform is reason enough to speculate. By the way, cool name *cough*.

You guys don't read the "featured game" section a lot, right? It says right there: 3D fighting game on arcade platform. Stop especulating.

This may end up being the only fighter I'll buy for a next gen system.

Well, seeing that the fighting genre needs a break, which is just the thing that the also tired skating genre just won't take, that's a great move.We can play our little FPS's and RPG's for a year until we're tired of Halo 3 or GTIII or GTA IV or Mass Effect..Assassin's Creed...Haze....whatever,but one year and a better game equals Soul Calibur awesomeness. My best experience with the game was when I was little, I used to always go to the arcade and own those Asian machine hogger's and play forever until I lose when I'm tired of it. Good times good times...being more of them on Capcom

I am NOT IPRESSED. I played the 1st one fo these games back in the 80's, when these were put in video game stores... the first one is still the best. graphs will get better, fighting tricks and motion as well, interactivity will improve but unless the story line changes, it is still Street Fighter.

  • ao_bomber

    Posted Oct 21, 2007 2:15 pm PT

Street Fighter is *not* a beat-em up, TMNT4 and Streets of Rage are beat-em ups. This is a fighting game, get your facts right, Gamespot.
