Sid Meier grabs a Guinness
Record book honors legendary game designer for being honored; Civilization Revolution for PS3, 360, and DS now due July 8.
Sid Meier has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including a star on the Walk of Game and a 2008 Game Developers Conference lifetime achievement award. In fact, the director of creative development at developer Firaxis--now owned by Take-Two Interactive--has received so many awards that he has received the postmodern distinction of being honored for being honored.
Today, 2K Games announced that Meier will be listed in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008 as having "officially won more game awards than any other video game creator." Strangely, neither 2K nor Guinness listed the exact number of awards Meier, who cocreated the Railroad Tycoon and Civilization series, has received in his more than two decades of game development. However, they did call out the aforementioned prizes as well as his 1999 induction into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame and his 2002 induction into the Computer Museum of America's Hall of Fame.
Also in today's announcement was a bit of unwelcome information that was new to many. Namely, 2K has announced that Civilization Revolution has been delayed by just over one month. Instead of launching on June 3, as previously announced, the game will now ship for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS on July 8 in North America. Work on a Wii version of the game, which offers a faster-paced, console-optimized version of the PC Civilization games, has been suspended since late January.
[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, GameSpot was told by 2K Games reps Civilization Revolution's new ship date was revealed in April via the game's official Web site.
