Argonauts Rise this fall

Codemasters' action-RPG reimagining of Greek myth preparing to set sail on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Codemasters has consulted its Delphic oracle, and the publisher today bears news that Rise of the Argonauts is set for release this fall. Reimagining the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts, the action role-playing game is being developed for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

The game tells the story of King Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece in an attempt to revive his assassinated queen. The tale will find Jason helming the Argo along with a handful of helpful heroes serving as his Argonauts, including Hercules, Atalanta, Pan, and Achilles.

Rise of the Argonauts will combine a real-time combat system featuring team combos, parries, and on-the-fly weapon switching with RPG elements like upgradeable weapons and branching story arcs. It has not yet been rated, but Codemasters is promising "brutal, lethal combat" in the game, complete with finishing moves.

Rise of the Argonauts is being developed by Liquid Entertainment, which has previously worked on The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring, Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard, and Desperate Housewives.

I'm not sure. Combat seems way more complex than just mashing buttons together, which is the sort of combat I enjoy. It seems now that we have to "aim" our strikes.

Must buy anyway. Gonna be awesome, I feel it in my blood.

if the game will have a good storyline i think it's gonna be a succes,
but i don't know about the thing with team combos, i think it will resemble wow, the only downside is gonna be the fact the the other characters that you are not in control will not be as suporting as you would like them to be.

syafiqjabar: I don't think I would call a 6.5 a glowing review. And event if it did get a good review you should read this before you trust game review sites.

Um, isn't Desperate Housewife one of the better TV show games made? I just remember reading a glowing review in a PC game mag somewhere. They scored it higher than the two other games Liquid games mentioned. I also think they forgot to mention Battle Realms, a Japan-myth-based RTS they made before the other games. In it, you sent the resource gathering unit to training buildings to turn them into soldiers. If you sent them to more than one training structure, you can get a different unit. Different training combos produce different units. Remember this game?

    BTW, I love Desperate Housewife.

It's a really good thing I don't care much for American RPGs, because based on the character list, the mythology aspects of this game would do nothing but piss me off endlessly. Just once I would like to see something 'based on mythology' not completely screw it up.

I agree with Viet1125. I hope Codemasters is focusing more on the RPG aspect of the game as well as the actual gameplay mechanics. And stay away from making it a "hack n slash/button-smashing" video game and make it more action-adventure with a kick-ass combat system.

Cool. I really dig God of War and this sounds pretty much in the same premise. Right on.

My big question mark is about how they are going to handle the story. To many games have been so heavy handed with their story that it's a turn off. (GTA4, MGS) I just want them to make a game and stop trying to make movies.

    I agree with fishnpeas1.

I think they should have just left the last game out. That's more of something to be embarrassed about rather than brag about.

Dragonshard and War of the Ring were pretty good, if somewhat simplistic. This is a completely different genre, but It's looking good so far. It's a shame so little Mythology finds it's way into games these days...
