Lifetime US Wii sales surpass Xbox 360

Nintendo points to latest NPD numbers as putting the motion-sensing system atop the domestic retail heap.

The industry-tracking NPD Group's sales data for June isn't set for release until later today, but Nintendo is already touting the figures as an inflection point in the current console wars. The publisher proclaimed that the NPD's latest figures show that the Wii has attained the title of the best-selling current-generation console in the US. Nintendo managed to make the claim without once mentioning by name the previous king of the sales hill, Microsoft's Xbox 360.

More than 666,000 Wii systems were sold at US retailers during June, putting the lifetime total for the region at nearly 10.9 million. However, the console still took a backseat to the Nintendo DS, as the handheld racked up more than 783,000 sales in June and more than 20.8 million in the US since its November 2004 launch.

Finally, Nintendo underscored the abundance of Wii and DS titles in the NPD Group's June stats, with six of the top 10 best-selling games being made for its systems. Guitar Hero On Tour took the second spot, with four through seven being occupied by Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, and Lego Indiana Jones for the Wii, in that order. The DS edition of Lego Indy also made its way onto the list at number nine.

[UPDATE] The NPD Group has since released its June sales data, which shows Mario Kart Wii and the Wii edition of Lego Indiana Jones in seventh and eighth place respectively, not sixth and seventh as Nintendo had stated.

    On the contrary just nonplussed, that post of yours clearly shows your logic is flawed and not meths, to say Nintendo makes the same old games is not only dumb but hypocritical. Sony has banked on the same games for years like FF, RE, GTA, MGS etc, etc so please don't say nintendo makes way more mario games then anything else. They ALL make key 1st party games that sell well, nuff said. I don't care if it's Nintendo, Sony or Xbox. They all do it. Sony with Solid Snake, Nintendo with Mario, and Xbox with MC....

    And to use Doom of all games is rather weak...first off it's not even a "great" FPS...secondly, if anything Nintendo is the key reason gaming is so large now...Sony is the culprit for killing gaming and turning off people more then anything with their lack of good games and ridiculous prices and xbox needs to fix the dumb RROD glitch already...

    Nintendo was here in the beginning 15+ years ago and is still here, let's face it Nintendo IS the gaming industry....

    Methuselah6463, your argument is flawed. nintendo regurgatate the same old games over and over again, just the same as the games you bark about on other systems. there has been 'wayyyyyyyyyyyy' more mario games than doom games, for instance. the mario brand has been exploited and raped for every penny. nintendo have some good games and a proud heritage to look back on, but they are a total factory and one of the worst culprits when it comes to endless franchising.

    people who claim that Nintendo has turned its back on "Hard core players" are insane! and personally I think VERY close minded.. any hard core gamer can tell you that the classics wii has preserved alone makes it worth having. The games on it that are being made are really quite amazing. MK, RE4, REUC,Mario Kart.. and about a billion others I can think of are wayyyyyyyyyyyy better on this system then any other because it gives a feeling of interaction!! xbox,ps3 .. Don't get me wrong they look pretty...but its the same old crap over and over and over again.. another game that I am going to sit on my couch and try to beat the same way I beat Doom on the pc or only with nicer colors..which is fine.. and I don't see anything wrong with it..but not one of the games on either of those systems I can honestly say I sat down and played and said...wow this is new and I am going to remember this...no.. Graphics are cool to upgrade but its really the interaction and the feeling you get from playing a game that you remember.. anyone who played Zelda A link to the past..can tell you there will never be a game like that ever again..because it had the right feeling and it had the right emotion to it.. All I been seeing lately "and i am sure people are going to hate me for saying this" but all I have been seeing lately is a bunch of copys of Doom with higher graphics, and Mortal Kombat and street fighter but prettier.. I mean come on..its COOL TO HAVE..but I have seen it so many times that its just sad people get sucked into this cycle of repeats.. if I didn't play doom years ago.. maybe i would like your halo's and your whatevers..but i find it just sad that the same crap is being given out just nicer colors

    Not all the Nintendo titles are childish, MK, GTA, RE, NMH to name a few have hit/or will hit Nintendo more etc but I hear what you're saying, well said H_A_L_O_3. You're right Nintendo's been here from the beginning they know the gaming market better then anyone in the end.

    I want a 360 too at some point, aheivements points?bahhh lol just an incentive for the gamer to complete the game but it's alright I suppose. IMO it's not necessary but some people like them. Super Mario Bros 3=priceless. My fav personally is the SNES version, Super Mario World but 3 was awesome too.

    Lets face facts, Wii is innovation, there is nuthin else like it on the market. I have a Wii, and yes it is collecting dust (much like my PS3), but thats only because the games out are either A) 2 childish B) on 360 where id rather play them because of the better graphics and of course, the ever popular achievement points. Besides Nintendo has been around since before i was even born, i stil have the original NES that i play (can't beat Super Mario 3, epic game) they know the market. If any one else can remeber, Microsoft is new to the console racket (there on there 2nd, Sony is on there 3rd, 4th if you count 2 diff. PS1 and Nitendo is on like there what 5th or 6th now) PS. Nintendo has been around since the 1800, they made playing cards

    @ cloudstife lol it's all good dude, but just noting that as far as "gaming" Blu Ray is pointless. I will say I'd rather have and be much happer with HD for 360(less money then the blu ray in total) and/or my regular DVD movies :-) the comparison with HD vs. Blu ray is very close, my friend has the HD 360 attachment, I must admit Transformers looked gorgeous on it when I watched it at my friends place: )

    @x-2tha- wrong dude, Nintendo has LOTS to be proud of about between the Wii and DS on top of their history overall, don't even say such nonsense please. Thanks : ) They haven't turned their backs on anyone, the whole "gaming community " doesn't revolve around "just hardcore gamers" people have to open their eyes and realize this....*shakes head*

    agreed with MKF30 about everything, except for the info about blu-ray disc being totally useless. blue-ray discs give more storage space which means better game quality. (graphics, sound, maybe gameplay) plus, you can watch blue-ray disc movies in the ps3

    I'm a huge fan of Nintendo, but I have to agree that there is no more games for me on the Wii. The GameCube was behind of ps2, but it had lot's of excellent games for a hardcore gamer like me. But now it's difficult to imagine myself playing games like Skies Of Arcadia Legends, Hitman, Freedom Fighters, Prince Of Persia, XIII, Beyond Good & Evil, Rainbow Six, Tales Of Symphonia, Call Of Duty, etc... on the Wii. My preferred console today is no more a Nintendo console. Even so I'm still a Nintendo fan, and I keep following Nintendo everywhere.

    Yep. I'm a movie guy, not really a TV guy and back when the PS3 was first released there were my 6 HD channels that my cable provider offered so I didn't bother. The PS3 was finally able to give my HD a decent workout and it's still my primary use for my HD because, as I said, I don't really watch much television.

    it doesn't matter to me if everyone in the world owned the wii but me I still wouldnt be begging for one. I sold my old one the only game i had to play was twilight princess. after seeing nintendos e3 conference im glad i got my money back. the whole thing is based on the controller and it just wears off really fast on me. I see how it could appeal to children and adults 40 years and older though

    I have both a Wii and a Xbox 360 and I must agree with Hex_Of_A_Nation the Wii is the worst of the three consoles. I dont care about sales. There are few good games for the Wii and Nintendo relies to much on its first party developers. Its supposed to appeal to a more casual market even there it sucks. Non gamers buy the Wii and assume that its gonna have great games because of the motion sensing and when they realize that their assumption is wrong they stop playing it. The Wiis software sales suck as you can see which fuels my theory. I hope Nintendo is enjoying their little party because with the PS3 and 360s venture into casual gaming the Wii will steadily die. Nintendo knows what there doing their keeping their company alive. If the Wiis sales flopped Nintendo would lose alot of money and eventually have to close due to the fact that they have know other means. Microsoft has Windows and Sony has electronics.

    as a PS3 owner. I have to credit to Nintendo if it was not for them, I wouldn't have the passion that I have for video games today.

    I'm on my late 20's I've played my share of games lol!!!, more coming. Nintendo has influenced the industry for more than 20 years and still going strong, give credit where credit is due.

    @crills You are most certainly wrong. The 360 has way more than FPS games. The 3 most anticipated title right now for the 360 are Fable 2, Gears of War 2, and Halo Wars. Did you notice anything about those games? None of them are FPS games.
    FPS have difficult settings for a reason. If you beat it on easy, move to a setting more fitting. Play Mile High Club in CoD4 on Veteran and then come back and tell me FPS games are too easy. FPS games will be shorter than a Zelda game because FPS games also feature multiplayer/online play.
    "ALL THE TRULY NEXT GEN STUFF ON THE WII" Dude, I don't care if you like the Wii, but don't give me this fan boy stuff. The Wii is using last gen tech all across the board. Its CPU and GPU are comperable to the original Xbox's and its "cutting edge" motion sensing technology has existed for decades. The 360 uses an analog controller because anything else would interfere with control schemes on popular games such as Halo 3, CoD4, Gears of War, Bioshock, etc. Bottom line is that hardcore gamers don't necessarliy want motion sensing, and if they do they need a system with an analog controller as well.
    "WE ARE PLAYING GAMES WITH NEW AND FRESH IDEAS" Please, Nintendo has been using the same characters and game franchises for decades. I have to give them props for keeping those franchises alive this long, but they are getting way old. I would rather go grab my Gameboy Color and play Super Mario Bros (a truely briliant and original idea in its time) than play some Mario knockoff on my Wii.

    As an owner and experiencer of Robbie the Robot and the Light gun package back in '86 I Salute the big N on their wii success.... But honestly as a gamer there is no comparison...... 360 blows the wii out of the water and into outer space.... wii has too many SUCKY aps..... Awesome System but lets be real.....

    It's good to see nintendo do well. I grew up on the NES so I have a soft spot for them. It wasn't my first, but is was the most influential for me. Sure, i had an IBM PC, and atari 2600, an intellivision but the NES really made an impact on me. After the 'relative' failures of the N64 and GC they needed a hit, and they got one with the Wii.

X360 has never taken off in Japan because the Japanese expect a higher quality machine then one who has something like the 3 rings of death. As for the PS3, and uneducated consumer would buy one at the rates and times they change price points. I have a friend who purchased a ps3 40 gig for 400 dollars a few months ago. Needless to say how upset he was when he heard about the 400 dollar 80 gig model. Talk about stabbing uneducated consumers in the back. The wii never promised anything incredibly special other then motion control interaction. The Wii has delievered on all of it's promises, something the X360 and PS3 have failed multiple times, yet they keep getting free passes, why? Is it because they are better systems, or do people have to find some way to validate their 400-600 dollar video game systems by attacking the one system that has done what it said it would do?

    Fyre8892 i have a 360 and a wii and i play with the wii just as much as my 360 but lets talk truth alot of you in here hate on the wii but the 360 all it has are fps and any body can beat one of those but i bet you if i gave you a game like zelda or mario galaxy you wont finish it as fast as that fps.so what theres no hd a real gamer will play on a toaster if the games plays good (crono trigger any one)i feel soory for you so called hard core gamers cause your playing last gen games with a hd face lift and some voice chat while im enjoying ALL OF THEM THE PS3 THE 360 AND ALL THE TRULY NEXT GEN STUFF ON THE WII WERE WE ARE PLAYING GAMES WITH NEW AND FRESH IDEAS EVEN IF THEY DONT ALL WAYS WORK OUT YOU GOT TO AT LEAST TRY CAUSE IF NOT WILL WILL BE PLAYING THE SAME GAMES FOR EVER and im a hard core gamer since 1979 ....CRILL VIRUS MY GAMER TAG FOR THOSE THAT THINK IM LYING ITS THE SAME ON THE PS3 JUST NO SPACE (CRILLVIRUS)

    What a reversal from the N64 and GC days. Unfortunately, Sega was never able to reposition itself like Nintendo. I adore the Dreamcast, but it was a commercial failure. Shame, shame. *sigh*

    "Hardcore" games aren't just bloody, gory games. Final Fantasy is definitely considered "hardcore".

    You do realize sony has shrunk the 7 million gap in sales to microsoft from last year down to 5.5 million. Not to mention it sells slightly more units worldwide per year compared to m$. Microsoft only leads because it took that head start and sony is catching up.

    How does the ps3 not have a good lineup coming this fall and next spring. Should I type out the full list of slated releases.

    Of course Nintendo will remain king this generation, but i hate when peopel act like sony is down and out. A 5 million unit lead for a system that had a year head start is nothing compared to the leads we have seen in past gaming gens.

    Lets be realistic and realize that MS and Sony will be finishing is a close second place to Nintendo. there will be no losers as this is one of the rare times you see 3 major companies thriving in a console war

    Seriously?

    HDTV broadcasts is what most people watch on their HDTV's...people just don't watch that many blu-ray movies...as shown by the lack-luster sales compared to any other media option.
