TGS 2008: Square Enix's show-floor theatrics

Closed-door approach can't shut out crowds drawn to gawk at massive screen playing trailers and cutscenes for JPRG giant's upcoming offerings.

Valkyrie Profile for the DS. A big deal for Square.

TOKYO--While other publishers were busy trying to get people to play their upcoming games at TGS, Square Enix was happy to let its cutscenes do the talking. Most of Square's massive booth space was taken up by screens showcasing trailers from their upcoming games. The tactic which seemed to work fine for the local crowd as the famed Japanese role-playing game publisher's booth was always filled to capacity.

At the front of the booth was an open theatre showcasing some of Square's latest footage, but the real action was at the back in the appropriately named Closed Mega Theater. After lining up and getting inside, you could expect to see trailers for games such as Final Fantasy XIII, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Dissidia Final Fantasy, and more.

But most of the action was here, with plenty of trailers being shown.

Of course, Square did have some playable games. The company reserved quite a large area for its upcoming DS RPG, Valkyrie Profile. It also had an entire wall of kid-friendly DS games playable, although these didn't seem to be as popular as the other areas of the booth.

    i hope they hav matairea in dis game we need thoes back old skool n limet breaks back damnFF7 was da best game even FF8 remake FF7 n FF8 hell y not FF9 too man come on bring back da old skool dat wat they need to do go back to da roots i love FF12 tho nice freeroming when fightin enimes but let get back to it bring back limet breaks n mataira get back in there n make FF7 n FF8 even FF9 or y not they startin bring all mine people in all the Final Fantasy i know yall hav that already but make it in away of a roleplaying game man dat would b somthing if any1 feelin me or dis comment holla at me n if yall dont know wat im sayin leave a comment

    Square has made some poor games in the last few years. They need to cut back on the number of games they make and make sure there money makers like Final Fantasy are as good as they used to be. I'm hopping Last Remnant will be another Vagrant Story and I hope FF13 will have more to show soon.

    I have absolutely no problem waiting for anything with Final Fantasy (or Kingdom Hearts) on the label. Square-Enix puts out games as close to perfect as they can, and they are always worth waiting for, I just wish time would move a little faster sometimes.

    I agree with SFGiants11... I am sick and tired of those long cutscene with no game play... Seriously Squenix... send your guys to Bethesda Softworks. MAYBE they will learn how to deal with people, cause your devs have serious social issues.

    I can't stand Square Enix's method of releasing information. It actually decreases the hype for me, the way they release one screenshot every 3 months or so... It's ridiculous, and it makes me feel like they're just screwing with us. This, combined with their recent trend of mostly mediocrity, has diminished the developer's standing in my book.

    I love you square-enix! Well most the games i've played that were produced by these companies (as it were at one time) I've liked. I havent found a game that they've made that I have'nt felt like it was worth fifty bucks. Thats not to say I've played all thier games cause I havent. But they are probably one of the most trusted game developers for me.

    Man, this is getting kinda old. At least when they start making Final Fantasy XIV (assuming XIII is ever released and that they make a XIV, don't see why they wouldn't) I'll know to expect a whole lot of trailers and eventually a demo packaged with another product (which I may or may not have an interest in), after tidbit after tidbit of information is released every so often.

    The problem, of course, is that the games continue to be good, so I'll just have to keep believing that great games are long in the making and worth the wait.

    Sounds like some good news,i think squares gonna hold off of KH3 until the next FF comes out so they can incorporate some of FFIII's characters..Just a hunch but i think if they waited til that came out,more interesting characters disney and FF would freshen up and possibly make a brand new story.

    I Want Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 And KH Birth By Sleep for xbox 360 with new worlds better graphics and characters.
    Because Kingdom Hearts 3 is going to be released for xbox 360.

    This is the third TGS in a row with nothing to show for FFXIII but another trailer. Maybe next year Square Enix can make FFXIII's fourth visit to TGS include some actual gameplay.

    jfc, I just wnat to go to one of these and start punching the devs and execs in the face repeatedly over how they DON'T SHOW ANYTHING even though they have ZERO competition! Just there's atlas, but those games are strikingly different from Sqeenix games.

    Can get a some info about the game before it goes gold and starts pressing in japan??

    I agree with most they need to stop stalling and show gameplay of FF13 and the rest. Star Ocean 4 being ported someday (key word) would be nice.

    i want to go to a tgs so bad, cuz square is never gonna have everything out for the public, but i agree with shadyelf, maybe theyr creating chocobos for the military or there selves to start riding on, so they dont have to worry about gas
