Mirror's Edge trilogy planned

Senior producer says EA DICE game is first installment in "three-story arc"; level editor planned for sequel.

In the past, Electronic Arts has gained notoriety for being overly reliant on sequels and one-offs for its many gaming franchises. That reputation has been turned on its ear this year, with the publisher bringing to market a number of new properties including Spore, Dead Space, Army of Two, and Mirror's Edge. Of course, that doesn't mean that those new properties will simply be one and done.

In an interview with AusGamers, EA DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien confirms that the first-person action adventure Mirror's Edge will be the first in a three-game series. "The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," said O'Brien in response to whether EA would carry the series on in perpetuity. "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story. But certainly for these first couple games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world."

O'Brien also had a few words on the as-yet-unannounced sequel. Namely, he noted that one of the primary features being planned for the next game is a level editor

"It's something we're probably going to look at for the sequel," said the loose-lipped producer. "It will be great, it really will be great. Creating a level editor is a skill in itself, and that's a lot of work. And if we do it, we want to make the level editor as easy to use and intuitive as the game is. And that's going to take us quite a lot of time. So that's something we're looking at for the sequel."

Mirror's Edge will be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11, with the PC edition following sometime this winter. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's hands-on with the Time Trial mode from last week.

They should test before deciding a triology to early like how will it end graphics if they sold millons of copies etc

no game should be forced into a trilogy to make a great series. Like portal was tight and short and to the point, with no plans for a trilogy (but earned a sequel because of its success)

Wouldn't they want to wait and see how well the game does before announcing a trilogy?

Before this game gets released how could the guys at EA think this would be a major hit. Wait for the game to sell well then decide to make this a trilogy. At the same time this may do good after seeing DEAD SPACE. This game may have the potential to reach DEAD SPACEs caliber or not.

I certainly hope this is a good idea announcing something as important as this w/o even releasing the first game. Sure, I'm certain sales for Mirrors Edge will be pretty high, considering its release date. And that's what the only thing EA will be looking at and then go "woo sure, lets bring out the rest" If this game is good, sure they made the right decision. But what if it's a flop? Does EA track the number of these possible games that might get sent back? My guess is nope. I'm interesting in this game sure, but I'm more interested in seeing how EA got on such a high horse, lol.

Hopefully this game keeps Dead Space's momentum forwards in terms of making good games. If this game turns out awesome, I will definitely consider paying $180 for the entire trilogy. Better yet, I may have some faith in EA in the future....lol

Perhaps they think this game is a gem already. Remember how people were just like oh dead space will be good but not great. Well this might be another sleeper hit from EA. I don't really care to much about there corporate practices if they can make games right. How ever this could be to hype the game up before its out on the shelves.

For myself I don't have any problems with something being a trilogy but what does kind of baffle me, as others have pointed out, is this thing isn't even released yet... I mean most every game is a crap shoot as far as I am concerned. This thing could bomb. I don't think that it will but still... why not hold onto this information until you see the bottom line on this game...

Doesn't make much sense to me.

And also...what's so ridiculous about a trilogy?! Nowadays, the story arcs in games are just so broad, they usually need 2 or more games to tell it all. I am in fact excited that the story line will be deep enough to carry through to sequels.

um, to respond to mitchster...Mass Effect also had a planned trilogy even before release...hmm i guess that means they didn't think highly of their AMAZING game either...funny how that works

The game isn't even out yet and they're planning on stuff for the next game? in my opinion they must not think highly of thier own game this is rediculous.

Everything now comes in trilogys, although what could you expect from the money sucking companies like EA.

Methinks this is all talk, I don't think the first one will sell enough to make it worth their while to do two sequels.

  • xgalacticax

    Posted Oct 15, 2008 10:19 am PT

They dont even know if they'll profit from a first one, lol. I'd see how the first one sells before planning the rest EA. But I guess you guys have so much money, you're willing to risk it.

  • Timstuff

    Posted Oct 15, 2008 9:57 am PT

I am sick of all this "trilogy" talk when it comes to games. If you have a good idea for a game, throw everything you've got at it. If it sells well, make a sequel. That's how the industry has always operated, and this concept of "designing games as a trilogy" has only appeared recently, and it always seems to lead to problems. These are VIDEO GAMES, not movies. When you buy a video game, it should feel like the developer made it as complete as possible, and held nothing back. I don't like the idea of buying an incomplete game just because the developer was "saving stuff for the sequel," which is why I didn't like Assassin's Creed, and why Too Human was an epic failure.

the first one hasnt even come out and their already planning a trilogy! still, this one sounds cool and the level editor woud be awesome!

Why is PC last and why are we put behind all other platforms? PC was first and the other's came later and still do not meet or exceed the PC's graphic capabilities....you guys keep pushing us further and further out and I personally will take my money to a company that includes PC's along with everyone else.

hey nacho7600 in what way is the fact that the protagonist being a girl stop someone buying a game?
does the gender of a character dictate how great or bad game is?
seriously i don't get retards like you.

2bitSmOkEy there saying theres going to be 3 games, not that one game is bing split into 3 chapters like starcraft.Although if it was the case you would have a good point.

i have a fantastic idea. lets just make every game cost money to play by chapters. 20 dollars a chapter! it can be like watching tv except paying for it!! 10 dollars per 30 minutes of gameplay!!!

no seriously...blizzard and ea need to die in a fire. money hungry douche bags.....and i was so excited for this game

First starcraft and now this? All games have adopted a trilogy... my guess is because hardware is getting bigger and there more room for this sort of thing.
