3D PS3 gaming arriving in 2010?

CNET reports Sony is aiming to ship HDTVs that support 3D gaming next year, with plans for the 3D technology to be built into the console starting in 2011 and 2012.

At the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony showed off PlayStation 3 games running in 3D (See below) at its booth on the expo floor. Though attendants stressed that the footage was for demonstration purposes only, it did show Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and MotorStorm running in three full dimensions on a large HDTV. (Like with the 3D movies currently being screened in theaters, special glasses were required to view it.)

Now, Sony has confirmed that the first HDTVs to support PS3 3D gaming will likely hit the market next year. Last week at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung, or International Radio Exhibition) in Berlin, Sony reps told GameSpot sibling site CNET that the company is aiming to bring a PS3-compatible 3D Bravia HDTV into full production by the end of 2010.

To further tease the possibilities of the technology, Sony set up the prototype unit with a PS3 on the IFA show floor, showing off existing games, like WipeOut HD, being played in 3D. Company reps said the technology on display was built into the HDTV itself, meaning it would work with preexisting PS3 games and consoles.

However, more importantly for gamers, Sony reps said the company is aiming to integrate the 3D technology into the PS3 hardware itself starting in 2011 and 2012. If that plan comes to fruition, those PS3s could turn any HDTV into a 3D display without any modification. The company said similar plans are under way for Blu-ray players and VAIO laptops.

    Maybe because alongside proper motion sensing and vocal interactivity it is the next big step for gaming?

    If no-one tried stuff like this we'd all be complaining that there is no advancement in gaming. Imagine if they got senses into gaming (eg smells), how crazy would that be!

    I'll wait for the NPD numbers to confirm this, but an increase in sales is no surprise given the new model and new lower price. Whether or not Sony can maintain this momentum (especially in light of the additional 360 price drop) is anyone's guess. It's way too early to make firm predictions like a lot of Sony fanboys have been doing.

    I can't wait for 3d gaming from Sony! If Blue Ray was originally $500-imagine how affordable 3d will be! "New 3D gaming machine now only $1399.99!     VG Chartz is absolutely not a place that can be trusted for sales information.

    VG Chartz specifically says on its website that they use "a proprietary method of analyzing sales that includes information from the manufacturer."

    This instantly means that anything related to sales of PS3 cannot be trusted, because Sony is the manufacturer supplying the information--and we all know Sony's track record of feeding shareholders bogus sales information that doesn't agree with NPD numbers.

    Once again, I will use the classic example of when Sony had set a sales goal of 6 Million units to be sold by spring of 2007. But when that time arrived, Sony had only produced 5.5 Million and sold only 1.4 Million. As a result, Sony changed their corporate definition of the word sold to be synonymous with the word "produced." This way, Sony was allowed to tell shareholders that the PS3 was only 500,000 consoles behind their sales goal instead of 3.6 Million units behind their sales goal.

    Each time Sony makes an announcement, VG Chartz changes their information to match what Sony says, regardless of what NPD numbers have shown all year. This is what the website means when it talks about "information from the manufacturer."

    If Sony were to sell only 100 PS3 units all year, and VG Chartz reported that each month, VG Chartz would change that number to reflect whatever Sony announced at a later time, even if it was an increase of 1 Million. This type of one day increase of 1 Million actually happened in 2007 with VG Chartz during a non launch period thanks to a bogus announcement from Sony. So VG Chartz can't be trusted.

    NPD numbers are 100% accurate and they show that PS3 sales doubled, but the PS3 was still outsold by Xbox 360.

    Not all people require Co-Op, infact I have rarely even heard of anyone complaining about it, seeing that Killzone 2 has a very decent single- and online multiplayer.

    Yes, Gran Turismo 5 has a lot of cars, but where did you read the ammount of tracks? Please, give me a link if you truly know something about it. Car damage can be hard to add to the game if the game has 1000 cars and they all have different outlooks from both outside and inside. I've heard the damage is visible inside the car in Gran Turismo 5 as well, think about how much of work would it require to implify the damage in every car. I've heard they'll only put it to those that are often used, because adding the damage to every car would be dumb especially since there are cars that probably no one will even touch, seeing that there's over 1000 of them. I've heard you can customize cars in GT5 as well, so what exactly is your point?

    Also, about E3 '09; were you there, or how exactly can you say something like that? GT5 kind of pwnt in GamesCom though keeping in mind that they had a real Audi there.

    Anyways going back ontopic;
    As I previously said before; the 3-D thing will be kickass and I'll surely try it out if they'll add it as a firmware update, because I won't be buying another PS3 just for 3-D while I'm already very happy with the current one that I have. However, even if it was to be in the newer PS3s then, it'd be nice for them those don't yet own a PS3.

    I believe the 3-D would be a thing that you can enable and disable yourself. You don't _have_ to use it if you don't want to.

    Looks neat enough. Games can definitly benifit from 3D tech. Seems like it'd ruin certain other things though.

    3D tends not to make it look much better, its wicked bad for your eyes, im looking for improvement in lag issues, graphics, audio, and more "Stuff" put in games.

    PS3 is a great console, i'm thinking of getting one, but if sony is attempting "3D Gaming", im sorry, but they just totally lost it.

    @Pwnd56, I think they did. You could see the horizontal lines go back into one, after a flick movement, and back again, which may have been a filter put on the camera, or they were switching something on the screen itself.

    But you wouldn't see 3D either way, even if it was on the camera.

    don't know... based on watching claymation 3d, i am kind of on the fence of any 3d animation, but then again, its one year later, and, ITS SONY. they pulled a freakin rabbit outta hat with the slim.

    It doesn't work like that. 3D color display technology requires the monitor/TV hardware anyway because of the requirement to output two distinct type of pixels that can be filtered by glasses. Unless old school red/blue pixel is used to depict 3D information, normal TV cannot display 3D information that can be readily separated by 3D glasses.

    Time certainly can be an advantage for a game if it is used wisely to include all possible features.

    Killzone 2 is an example of a game where time was not used wisely. Working for four years on a game, and releasing it without Co-Op in 2009 was not a smart move. In 2009 the feature of Co-Op was a "standard" thing that people expected. It was very disappointing when Killzone 2 did not have Co-Op.

    It's nice that Gran Turimso 5 is going to have a lot of cars, but it still doesn't have as many tracks as Forza Motorsport 3. Forza Motorsport 3 has over 20 more tracks--a 25% advantage for Forza Motorsport 3.

    The other big difference between the games is that Gran Turismo 5 still suffers from the problem of not being able to legally include real-life physical damage to all of those cars. Forza Motorsport 3 does not suffer from that problem. At the 2009 E3, the developers deliberately crashed a real-life car and the crowd started cheering. At first I didn't realize why, but then the announces pointed out how everyone was excited to see that Forza Motorsport 3 was going to offer real-wolrd physical damage to those real-life licensed cars.

    Also, Forza Motorsport 3 lets you fully customize your cars with plenty of features, so you theoretically could have an infinite number of cars. I personally place more importance on having a larger number of tracks and having cars that can be damaged. But, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.

    Or just simply means the game is well done, GT5 has said to have 1000+ cars. Which is more than Forza 2's and 3's cars combined. Often more time given to the development means good.

    you can call me old fashioned if you want but i prefer the good old dualshock controller i mean fair play to ppl who are into these sort off stuff but i no im not gettin it...i think it looks good enough witout the 3d goggles...but who knows it might b fun...its worth havin s look at

    Sounds cool.. but really i dont want to have the evil dude with sword popping out of the screen and slashing at me. I'd rather have him nicely placed in the screen while I slash him to bits. It'd be a bit too immersive, dnt you think?

    Sins-of-Mosin--are you implying that Sony is following the #@$%@#$ path of Nintendo like Nintendo did with the gimmick of basing a whole frikkin system (which has bad graphics...) on motion sensing?!?!

    3D is not a gimmick,hell no.It immerses you,whether it's with a movie or a game or whatever.

    I think both Microsoft and Sony will rely on 3D technology the next generation,and Nintendo is really unpredictable I don't know what they're going to do but I honestly don't care about them anymore.

    Can't wait for next gen

    I have to agree. The fact of getting all HDTV's to have the possibility of supporting 3D has confused me too.

    However, the extra hardware they are thinking of adding, for people that don't have 3D capable TV's with the correct methods, could be as simple as a shutter glasses kit, so that any HDTV with a high enough refresh rate could support 3D

    Thanks for the info on RealD. I knew most of that, but I thought it was 120hz, not 144 as you've mentioned. I also didn't try tilting my head, but I believe you on that too :p

    It still doesn't seem high enough though to support flicker free viewing. The brain processing the information behind the scenes to make the 3D image still knows the image isn't shown at the same time, even if you are not aware of it yourself, but it is enough to trick the brain into percieving the image as intended.

    They need to, in my opinion, increase the frames per second in PAL + NTSC when filming for a 3D film. Motion does seem jumpy in Imax 3D for example, compared to if you are watching it in 2D.

    Instead of 25FPS (PAL) and 29.7FPS (NTSC). I think 60fps would be really nice, and with the digital form factor now, wouldn't be using film.

    Your brain can again pick up a lot more frames per second than in any TV you watch, but it is enough to trick the brain into believing there is actually motion going on, and not a load of static images shown one after the other

    I'm sorry, I know this is off topic, but you guys really have to learn what counts as "protesting too much".
    SalarianChemist, I respect the research that you have clearly done, and the clear manner in which you present your arguments, but please relax. If you are going to get into a shouting match with every person who disagrees with you, you will achieve nothing other than tired fingers and stress.
    We all know that both major consoles and pcs have advantages and disadvantages over each other but it is really not necessary to shout your corner (or even take one to start with) in every forum.

    You have to remember though that Planetside was produced for a PC. I just think that the technology that came out with the PS3 and 360 was made for graphics more that in-game networking. I really want to see this game though! It has a lot of potential, we just have to see if it comes through. I just wish that MW2 would have incorporated the wall hide like in R6V2! When that happens, I will be completely content with every game after that! haha

    MAG is built off what they learned from Planetside which had 300 players...and even with the dedicated servers it did lag a bit when all 3-sides started fighting over a control spot but even so it was impressive to watch never mind play.

    Planetside was a wicked game...just needed more variation for lasting appeal and I look forward to such improvements in MAG.

    There is no way that MAG is going to run smooth with 256 players in a room at one time! Battlefield BC couldn't even do it on the 360's servers with 20 players. MAG is a great concept though and I wish it the best of luck! I just don't think that neither the 360 nor the PS3 can process that much information quickly enough to be able to save face. It will take the next gen of consoles(being built with MMO's in mind, guarantee this will be how it is, and at a hefty price probably anywhere from $500-$1000) to be able to pull this off!

    But back to the main reason ya'lls posts are on this page! GT5 looks awesome in that video, and that's through the computer monitor. Wish I could have seen it up close and personal. Can't wait to see what happens with games like COD with this technology. I'm wanting a PS3 right now bc of the price drop, but I think that I will wait until the 3D version comes out. I've honestly been talking to my friends about 3D technology coming to consoles for the past year. I can finally say that I was right. This will be awesome!
