As Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots draws nearer to release, gamers were left salivating yesterday when Konami confirmed that they would indeed be releasing the Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection in North America. The pack includes Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence for the PlayStation 2. To celebrate their rerelease, all of the packaging has also been redesigned by artist Yoji Shinkawa. Shinkawa was responsible for the character design in the original Metal Gear Solid.

Unfortunately, we've got some bad news for all the MGS fans in Australia. When contacted for a local release date on MGS:EC in Australia, an Atari spokesperson told GameSpot AU, "At the moment, we don't have plans to release it in Australia." Keep checking GameSpot AU for more news on Metal Gear Solid 4.

I'm an Aussie and this news story puzzles me. Atari Australia just imports the games from the UK and puts a Oz classification on it. Yet this game hasn't even been announced for the UK? So how could it even exist?

Thats bloody rediculous, why the hell not? We deserve it as much as any other country

I remember reading an article recently on how Atari was losing lots of money. If they do stupid things like this, then they DESERVE to lose money.

@ 2w-sephiroth: If noone in Australia bought any new games, how exactly would there be second hand ones? I mean. Just stop, take a deep breath, and think about that for a moment. Ok, Im only giving you one thought at a time here as you seem to have problems with it. Ok, digested that one. Second one, if there was no market for games here in Australia they wouldnt sell them, simple as that. Its basic economics. Sure we don't have the market draw that the US does but I think you will find thats due to the fact that our population is a lot smaller rather than noone buying them.

@ Generalmojo: Yes we are aware of Ebay but unless your PS2 is modded we cant play NTSC games on them, mine isnt modded. Id prefer a local release.

well australians never spend a cent on games, they allways buy second hand games and cheap discounts, they allways complain on how expensive they are too. I think the market for new games in Australia is not that big.

Once again, it sounds like Atari can't just can't be bothered to ship it down here. Worst thing is, every time they screw us over, more people order online.. which means when they look at their numbers, they decide all the more that its not worth releasing new stuff here, since people buy online... vicious cycle, for gamers, started by Atari.

Atari? What does Atari have to do with it? Can anyone explain that to me? The only logical explanation is Atari could publish a very heavily Konami Branded game, thats it...

A lot of stuff gets released in Australia late, besides, we in North America just heard about this, I'm sure it's just a short matter of time before Australians hear about this for them, it'll just come a month or few later.

That's pretty lame... were I an Aussie, I'd throw an online petition up pretty quick. Since Australia more than likely gets a similar edition to the EU version (or maybe just a PAL version of the US release), I think it'd only take dollar signs to sway them to the other side, really.

That being said, if it doesn't come to pass, it's always importable I guess...

it's a shame that some place' has to miss out on good games i guess it could do with cost's Ect:

You could import the UK version. The UK version is PAL so it will work with Australian PAL PS2's. Just buy it from the UK ebay or something. Play.com ship to Australia too I think.

Congrats Sony, you shaft us Aussies yet again. We get no BC with PS3s even though we pay more money for the system, we get bad delays, now you have no effort to make sure that this MGS collection arrives here. Thank goodness I migrated from PS2 to Wii60.

I think its interesting how GS twisted the news to sound negative. The news was that the pack was coming to the United States, but the headline is that it's not coming to Australia. Nice, GameSpot. Good way to make good news sound bad.
