What we heard: For years, rumors have bounced around that Blizzard is secretly developing a third installment in its groundbreaking Diablo role-playing series. Just this past February, a flurry of speculation followed the posting of several job listings for leads to join "the team behind Diablo I and II" for "an unannounced PC project."

Now, the rumor forge is heating up again, thanks to an interview with Richard A. Knaak, author of three Diablo-based books--Diablo: Legacy of Blood (2001), Diablo: The Kingdom of Shadow (2002), and Diablo: Moon of the Spider (2006). Knaak has also written novels based on Warcraft and the Dungeon & Dragons Dragonlance spin-off. He is currently penning a series of novels featuring the classic fantasy character--and future massively multiplayer online role-playing game hero--Conan the Barbarian.

To promote his forthcoming Diablo book, Diablo: The Sin War: Book One: Birthright, Knaak spoke with Blizzplanet.com and took questions from its readers. However, the biggest bomb came from a site staffer going by the handle "Medievaldragon," who casually asked if his latest book--the first of a trilogy--would "impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game."

Knaak responded candidly, saying, "The ramifications here will be used for any future project...and I ain't writing for a dead game. ." (Emoticon in the original.) Later, when asked by a reader about Diablo, he repeated his loaded words. "I am not writing for a dead world...but a world with dead," said Knaak, adding, "'Nuff said!

The official story: As it has in the past, Blizzard danced around any inquires about the status--or existence--of Diablo 3. "We love the Diablo universe and are definitely interested in returning to it at some point in the future," a rep told GameSpot. "However, at this time, we're wholly focused on completing the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft."

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that someday there will be a new Diablo game. But with the WOW expansion being delayed until 2007, it appears that Blizzard has its hands full at the moment.

    Yeah they have announced it already ... check out the blizzard website theres a special section about it with gameplay vids and everything... its not sposed to come out till about september 09.

    If they are making a Diablo 3 i think it would finally deal a real blow to that ever lovin game WoW. But I aint gonna put it on blast I just dont like that game. But hopefully, they are coming out with a D3, itd be just one more moth in my wallet though lol

    I hope they don't make it an MMO cause here in Belgium al the Internet providers have a down-and upload limit so we can't play enough before our limit is reached :s but hey belgium is a small country :s

    WIth the launch of Star Craft 2 on our door step, does this FINALLY mean that we can see Diablo 3??? patience is a virtue, in this case, virtue is a disgrace... this is taking way to long. Enough of focusing in the MMO's already....

    Yeah yeah be done with the expansion already and get working on Diablo 3 before someone figures out how to open up a portal to Ogrimmar with the horadric cube and LOD characters start coming through

    Blizzard has recently created a new project workforce called Team 3. It has about 40 members that are separate from the WoW and Starcraft teams. Team 3 is currently working on the "Next Gen-MMO."

    I do hope that one of my worst fears is not coming true. If it is then Blizzard will always be associated with evil money making corporations like the Tobacco industry and Microsoft. (I do apologise for using the M-Word).

    I still play Diablo all the time on my 96 hammerdin and my 86 light sorc but I think the graphics would suck if it was on the wii becaause it would probally have the Mii graphics or something stupid like that but I'd want more of a choice not just the story line and then more to do other than the storyline, runs, and magic find, but like each class plays a role too

    StarCraft will be the first to come. From Blizzard the main graphical artist is gone working for London HellGate game. Diablo 3 has an official site where you can make all kinds of sugestions. I'ts still a project.

    Blizzard can't just let their hands off of World of Warcraft. It's like leaving a baby in a bathtub with a toaster. I'm sure with the expansion completed they'll have more time, but making StarCraft 2 AND Diablo 3 before winter 2008... both games would have to suck. Unless - they have already been working on them for a while now. =P

    A console version of Diablo 2 would not compare to a PC version of Diablo 3. But, if you put it on the Wii you could cast spells by waving your controller, that would be cool. And it would solve the problem of not having enough buttons. Blizzard should just do it and make a few more million off the game.

    i think diablo 3 is secretly in development, and will be released after starcraft 2, because starcraft broodwar is from 1998, and diablo 2 lod is from 2001. We didn't hear anything from starcraft 2.. and now we saw those screenshots.. :X blizzard are doing their work, but quietly.. keep the good work starcraft 2 will appear in lattely 2007 or in 2008, and diablo 3 is next.. probably will be announced like a bomb, when the game is 80 % done.. and appear in 2009 excuse my bad english..

    I hope it will worth our waiting if the rumors is true.
    The Diablo 3 will need to really kick some ass, if its wont to be the best game of the year like the previous Diablo, and now with the Oblivion iv it will really hard

    But i think D3 is not going to be released anytime soon, maybe like late 08 or even 09. So let's just wait for Starcraft 2 which will be released next year? one at a time.... So, It wont be so much shock if both really suc. Imagine having 2 great games which all players are waiting for a long time and they screwed it up...

    I would love to see this happen on DX10 within the next 2 years but for some reason i doubt that is going to happen. I am not going to get hyped without even a few screenies or a concrete answer. Besides, the ad they put out for employees to work with D1 & 2 devs was probably for Hell Gate: London.

    OMG i hope this diablo3 thingy is true been waiting on this kind of news for a long time. I hope they make it as soon as possible. It would be even greater if they made warcraft 4.......i had enough of wow and im startin to hate it....as the story isnt going anywhere.

    i think it would be insanely stupid to put any diablo game back to the playstation, must i remind people of the horrible experiance of the first one's ps1 port? that one played horribly and was no-where near as good and the pc port, and i think it would be the same for if or any diablo3 game to be sent to the ps3, 360 or the wii, i own a ps3 and absolutly love it, but i would not want to see a diablo 3 game on it, that is what i own a computer for, are for games that are far better on pc then they are on console and vice versa and will always remain so, like dungeon siege, could never make a good console port, wouldn't even come close, and thats just one of many many examples of PC games that should have never been console games
