Aion preorders near 400,000

NCsoft claims title for "biggest MMO release of the year," as advance purchases of online game close on milestone in advance of September 22 launch.

Even without its North American release, Aion: Tower of Eternity has been yielding dividends for massively multiplayer online role-playing game company NCsoft. Following its late-2008 launch in Asia, the game has pushed the South Korean publishing house to respective 315 percent and 451 percent profit windfalls over the past two quarters. Now, it appears as if Aion's sales popularity will extend across the Pacific Ocean, as well.

NCsoft said today that Aion preorders have nearly reached the 400,000-unit marker in advance of the game's September 22 launch for the PC in North America. According to the publisher, the milestone gives Aion the right to claim the title of "biggest MMO release of the year."

Unlike 2008, which saw the launch of big-name MMOGs such as Age of Conan and Warhammer Online, 2009 has been relatively light for the massively multiplayer online market. Beyond Aion, Cryptic Studios' Champions Online is arguably the highest-profile MMOG out this year, with other titles in the genre including Icarus Games' Fallen Earth and Vogster's shooter CrimeCraft.

In an effort to encourage preorders, NCsoft is offering advance purchasers a number of incentives. Those who pick up Aion before launch will be able to preselect which server they play on. Prepurchasers will also be able to begin playing the game on September 20, two days before its official launch and retail availability. Preorders are available through NCsoft's online store as well as from traditional brick-and-mortar outlets such as GameStop and Best Buy.

Hi everyone. Will this work on a mac or only PC?

This is no different than 95% of other MMO releases... it gets good numbers upon initial release but in a couple months at least 50% of those subscribers will move on to another game (or just go back to WoW). Lets see the numbers 6 months after release.

brunorr 5 pts

@_Emperor It's ok if you like the game but saying it's new in all aspects is far from the truth. Correct me if I'm wrong: 1. Pick a pre-generated archetype class 2. complete quests/ go to another area/ complete quests/ go to another area.. 3. do instances 4. endgame raids. I don't need something completely original, just staying away from the formula above works for me. And yes I like games with no classes, no exp, no linearity, like Ultima Online. Sadly there are none to play because the industry prefers to copy a successful game than risk new ideas. APB will try something new so I'm waiting for launch and reviews.

I don't recall ever seeing this game in previews or hearing about it from anything.

"Eh, those numbers aren't as high as I was expecting. Didn't AoC have 700,000 pre-orders" You can't really compare any none IP game to IP games.. like AOC or War.. Even War had 800k peeps.. even if most of them knew that it's full of bugs.. That proves pretty much that people buy anything that has a wellknown name on it's title ignoring all the facts that the game, sux.. Hope sw won't end up like that.. but i have no high hopes after the last "big" names of the mmo genre.. Aion isn't well known.. cause it's a new universe.. and they started bit late with advertising the game in the west.. Besides from what i hear many retailers went out on pre-order boxes.. So i guess there are some more people waiting for the next wave of boxes to buy theirs.. Anyway even with this 400k people aion is going to have around 12-15k people per server at start.. which is a huge number for any mmo..

That's really great...so, anyways...when is Jumpgate Evolution's pre-sale gonna start??????

I dunno. I'm kinda tired of the whole "fantasy" setting. I played the beta and yes it's awesome. Just tired of the fantasy setting. I'd love if Valve would make an MMO. I could easily go for a Half Life or Left for Dead MMO. That would be fun! But, please no World of Team Fortress thank you.

The whole flying angel thing looks ridicules " look moms i can fly!" i predict lots of kiddies playing this. And it has an manga taint on it ....bleh i gues ill wait for SWTOR and GW2

SlayerX13 5 pts

I'll wait for SWTOR. :p Aion was boring to me.

Can't wait to get my hands on it. At this point, I'm happy to get away from WoW.

badtaker "mmo's are good but i cannot afford the monthly payment." One of those things you need to work into a budget. For example, after my free play time elapses, I'll probably sign up for a 3-month sub. Aion takes Pay Pal, and the 3-month price breaks down to $13 bucks a month, which breaks down to about .44 cents a day. You could skip a useless bottled water or a pack of gum, and pay for that. Or refrain from one (1) large franchise coffee drink, which would pay for 1/4 of your monthly sub...

Pre-orders mean nothing, its all about what happens a few months down the road. Alot of people have hate for this game, its becuase Aion is talked about as the wow killer and alot of people are leaving their current MMO for this one. You can't really tell how good a MMO is until you level up to max and participate in the end game aspects, until then you have no clue how good the game is. There is alot of games better than wow its just that wow is such a time sink so people who wasted alot of time and have uber gear don't want to throw it all away, but seriously wow is lame try something new you'll love it.

I very much enjoyed playing the OB. Level 50 toons have an outrages number of unique spells and powers...

monson21502 8 pts

this is the game my wow buddies are hyped for. i said no more mmos for me!!

eyeball2452 11 pts

You don't need to secure the discs when you have to log in to play. As for the article, pre-order numbers mean nothing. Think of it like stock market momentum.

runstalker 5 pts

Damn, NCsoft just announced--in response to tons of feedback and petitions--that Aion will indeed NOT be launching with nProtect or Game Guard in US, Canada and Europe. That's bloody impressive. The internets will be rejoicing. This is kinda like Securom being removed from a typical PC game. And totally unexpected that NCsoft Seattle would cave in and honor their Western customers (for now) by yanking it at launch. Nice move; some people were having trouble with Game Guard.

@brunorr Define "new". This is new in all aspects, gameplay style. Or do you want a mmorgp game w/o exp and running around with BFG's? oh wait, even that exist...so again, define NEW

quind 5 pts

Eh, those numbers aren't as high as I was expecting. Didn't AoC have 700,000 pre-orders? Well, it's not the 22nd yet, so I suppose I'll just wait and see what the final numbers are at that point. (This makes me wonder how low Champions Online's pre-order numbers were, if this is the "biggest" release this year.)

brunorr 5 pts

I don't know how ppl don't get tired of the theme-park mmorpgs. I will pass this one and SW:TOR. I'm only buying another mmorpg if it brings something new.

"While many are starting to play, I'm starting to get tired of the game after play for nearly a year in Korea. @_@ Maybe playing on the US Version will be invigorating." STARTING to get tired after a YEAR? That's more longevity than I'd prefer to have in a video game, lol. But look who's talking, I played WoW for 4 years.

just wondering if anyone else received their retail copies of the Collector's Editions. I just got mine today which is weird, because I didn't think they were shipping out till the 22nd. nice surprise when i got home just now. also, the box says 1st month of gameplay included. i didn't even know that. f'n awesome.

dentui 5 pts

its already over 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!

DontEatCream 12 pts

400K? Pssh, that's nothing. Wait till Old Republic comes out...

ropumar 5 pts

I guarantee half of the preorders are from Steam. If Warhammer, Age of Conan, vanguard, LOTR and even hellgate had gone trough steam on launch with pre-order incentives and beta code the history of said games would be entirely different. That is how big steam is on the core PC gaming market. Publishers should embrace(yes, even EA). The only publisher that can comepete withotuh steam is Blizzard. It's upcoming Battle.net with WOW, starcraft2, Diablo3 will be self-sufficient.

Just to answer a few questions, the game runs mid-high settings on pretty old pcs. I have nothinig special core2duo 1.6 gHz, 2 gb ram, 512 gb video card on my laptop and ran great once it loaded ( alittle slow on the loading time). The real question will be server integrity at launch, worked fine on open beta..

Zerabp 5 pts

I can't wait to reserve two names tomorrow though I wish they'd let us do more (damn you for trying to be fair NCsoft).

ccclout 5 pts

I left Warhammer and I will never go back. I left Warhammer not because of Aion, just because Warhammer is not that great, it has nothing to do with Aion.

runstalker 5 pts

Geezus, WAR. It certainly had a fun period, and you're all giddy because PvP/RvR gives nice XP, but the gross tedium of playing musical fort capture erases that high. Not to mention, WAR really doesn't have very good performance in super-hectic PvP. While Aion is ridiculously smooth in crowds. Aion's combat is far more enjoyable too. No hard feelings against WAR, it gave me some good months, but it's obvious (even after only leveling two characters to 30 across 4 betas) that Aion is the superior MMO title.

Narutofan30 5 pts

What is this Aion must be good if its got 400k preorders................

Dead-Memories 5 pts

sigh. those are potential WAR customers. It's sad to see so many of WAR's subscribers go to Aion, but it was only a matter of time I suppose. Most will be back I have no doubts of this.

alkaline_DnB " for the price, i've never been more impressed with bonus material and collector's edition content in recent memory than with Aion. They're really hookin it up with this game. other devs should take note." Yeah, I went for it and am not disappointed with the CE extras. Pre-purchased my Aion on Steam, so it's all in-game claim items like wings--stuff you can use. The game is excellent, runs very smooth. Of course I expect some servers to burp and hiccup around launch, so we'll get some of that "lag"--but if you isolate the game itself, yeah--it's really very tight, very premium. Polish is up there with WoW, but better gameplay/combat, obviously better visuals. Best stock soundtrack for any MMO, even if you'll probably play your own tunes. Don't even dare to compare it to any free-to-play fantasy junk, even if your first impression makes you think of other Asian MMOs. Aion is superior to every MMO of the last 2-3 years, East or West, and it runs on just about anything.

dashawnthl 5 pts

Everyone wants that next great MMO, i hope this holds up, but the beta was fun

jroony96 5 pts

I'll be playing this game. Looks awesome.

Chargrilled 5 pts

thats a LOT of preorders. im hoping the servers can handle the load during headstart.
