Angry Birds Star Wars launches November 8

Rovio and Lucasfilm partner for game to launch next month on iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone, and Windows 8; various merchandise also planned.

Angry Birds is flapping its wings to a galaxy far, far away next month. Rovio today announced a partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. for Angry Birds Star Wars, a new entry in the series hitting iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows 8, and Windows Phone on November 8.

According to the game's announcement, Angry Birds Star Wars will tap into the science fiction franchise's characters and settings, including the desert world of Tatooine and the supermassive Death Star ship.

Concerning gameplay, Rovio executive Peter Vesterbacka said Angry Birds Space will feature "all-new cutting-edge gameplay," but did not mention specifics.

Not only will Angry Birds Star Wars invade smartphones, tablets, and computers, but various merchandise will hit retail beginning on October 28. These offerings will include Halloween costumes, apparel, action figures, and plush toys.

Additional information regarding Angry Birds Star Wars will be made available in the coming weeks through the game's new Tumblr account.

Never liked Star Wars or Angry Birds, so, imagine my enthusiasm!

On a related note, I was not totally surprised to see Angry Birds arrive on the consoles...

I *was* surprised to see it arrived as a boxed set available at retail for $40.  I mean, I know it's in HD and all, but a 4,000% markup over the smartphones?  C'mon...

@PSYCHOV3N0M That's just the sort of outside-the-box thinking that Rovio is looking for!  Do you want a job?  :-)

Hmm, the trolling is strong in this article.  Bet most of you haven't even tried the games for more than a couple of minutes.  The simplicity of the gameplay just draws me right in, and yet trying to knock down all the pigs while doing as much damage as possible while using as few birds as possible and trying to get that magic three stars is addictive as crack!

Who's going to buy this?  But then again, I keep wondering who is buying all this Angry Birds junk (i.e. shirts, bed sheets, and flash drives).

This just screams cash grab. You think they could be a little more creative instead of relying on combining two brand names that have nothing to do with each other?

@Tauu No.  The Peanuts are slowly dying out, and they started in the 1960s.

Two companies that literally cannot help themselves from recycling the same IPs over and over and over.  But then, if consumers want to keep paying for the same product, I don't blame the companies.

"the supermassive Death Star ship." That's no moon... um, I mean, that's no ship, it's a space station!

Except for Star Wars 1313, which is A New Hope among mediocre games, the last time I was excited about a new Star Wars game is so distant that it feels like it was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Two overly used IP's combined into one to form the biggest attempt to cash in on exhausted titles. Prime example of what happens when money motivates creativity.

Think about the executive meeting that must have taken place, it probably went something like this:

Angry Birds Rep: "You know what the kids like? Star wars!"

StarWars Rep: "yes YES! I like where you're going... now, what if we are to make the birds... Star Wars Characters?!?!?!."

Angry Birds Rep: "OMG, that's gold. SOLID. GOLD."

[end of meeting]

@mlcarter815 oh yea, I'm sure it will. I could probably sell my carton of spoiled milk to Star Wars fanboys if I slapped a picture of Chewy on it and labeled it: "Chewy Curds"
