California tech giant sees record sales of mobile devices in latest quarter; total revenue hits $54.5 billion during period.
Apple today reported financial results for its first quarter ended December 29, revealing record iPhone and iPad sales. The company sold 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter, up from 37 million a year ago. In addition, Apple sold 22.9 million iPads during the period, up from 15.4 million last year.
It wasn't all positive for Apple, as Mac and iPod sales were down during the quarter. Apple sold 4.1 million Macs during the period, down from 5.2 million last year; and 12.7 million iPods, compared to 15.2 million this quarter a year ago.
Overall, Apple posted record quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and a record quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion. Average weekly revenue hit $4.2 billion, compared to $3.3 billion a year ago. In addition, international market sales made up 61 percent of Apple's quarterly revenue.

1 Like Without reading the comments below I can predict that there will be a lot of comments along the lines of "It seems there are a lot of stupid people in the world" and other people insulting Apple and the people who use their products. Funny how some people have such a problem with other people enjoying technology, unless they agree on what the best phone is.

1 Like i use to have an iphone 2g, i now have android and will be sticking with android, the worse thing about apple products isn't just the extremely high price you pay for them, it's that fact that you have to use itunes in order to do anything and i completely agree that apple products are for complete noobs
@phink108 You don't have to use iTunes, and if you couldn't figure out how to use it properly, doesn't that make you the noob?
I can always tell the people who have never studied a computer science degree. Most of my lecturers use Apple products and love them, and many of the people on my course do too. I'd love to see you challenge some of them. "Yeah you might have a PhD in computer science, might have published dozens of world class research papers, and may be one of the experts in your field, but because you use an Apple product you're a noob and I know more than you."
1 Like Who the hell are buying all these IPhones and IPads? 47 Million?? That must be worldwide sales. That's a LOT for one quarter. I'm happy with my IPad2 and my IPod Touch, but I don't have a IPhone. I'm just picked up a Galaxy S II. I haven't even scratched the surface as to what this phone can do. I do love the talk text. That's a great feature. There are like 40-50 apps already pre-loaded on the phone and I've used maybe 5 of them. I like that I can watch Netflix anywhere. I have unlimited web access.
I've stood by my iPhone for years because I invested so much in apps. But I hardly buy phone apps anymore so looking at jumping ship once my contract is up. My phone works well but my friend's GS3 is awesome. I'm not a guy who needs the best all the time, so the new model every 6 months doesn't bother me, but the quality gap between the products does seem to be growing enough to warrant a switch when it's time.

1 Like to put things into perspective, this means around 150 MIL daily net profit out of 600 Daily Rev.
Saudi Arabia produces 12 Mil oil barrels a day, for a hundred each that's 1.2 Bil Daily rev, I doubt that oil has the 25% prof to rev ratio apple has, i think it's less with all the complex oil operation, number of employees and overpaid expat and local expertise.
Saudi is literally overflowing with money because of this, I seriously do not have the imagination to guess what would apple do with theirs, probably they should buy their own country, make their own laws, and avoid paying taxes altogether to make more money just to prove they can.
Now that's capitalism at its best. Build a great product and people will come. Better tax them more, they have lots of money.

I used to not know why Apple products were so popular. I have had blackberry, Windows mobile, and Android devices, and once I got an iPhone I understood. It runs perfectly, never has any hiccups and is fast as hell.
@lo_crow98 yes because is the exact same hardware in every phone, so the iOS only gets programing for one hardarwe, one case. Android is programed with TONS of cases (hardware): speed, mobo, wifi, bluetooth, same with Windows
@Lestat_jio @lo_crow98 Which is a shame on Android. I have an S3, jumped ship from iPhone 5. Better phone no doubt but the stock iPhone, while defeated in benchmarks, is 'real world' faster. I had to tinker with my S3 extensively to make it as fast as a stock iPhone 5. Now, that is to be expected with a larger screen. I love my S3 and will not go back but if Google themselves would focus on one device, they would probably make a powerhouse.
1 Like Oh how shocking...lol Apple builds quality stuff and it works. I personally like to tinker which is the antithesis of what apple wants me to do. It will never appeal to me for that reason alone. Also they opened the flood gates for patent trolling which is becoming something that has seriously started to hurt the industry. I haven't gone a single week without seeing a company get nailed for violating some obscure patent that ends up costing them billions since the whole samsung/apple thing. They make solid high quality products but they are a virus for the tech industry.
@Devil_wings00 Agreed. The flack Apple receives for it's products is misdirected. Bottom line, their products are well designed, well running machines. It is their attitude towards the public and competitors that show their true colors. They are truly an evil organization.
If they did not have the rotten practice of releasing new and slightly improved hardware annually, I would be happy for them.
2 Like I have such a massive problem with Apple. To me, Apple represents everything that's wrong with the world.
They lie, they cheat, they steal, they let people die for profit, their whole paradigm encourages placing emphasis on appearance as opposed to actions, they aggressively hold back humanity's progress and innovation for their own personal short-term financial gain, they stifle and kill new businesses that may stimulate competition, they skip from border to border with more power than any government being living proof to the sceptical that money is the only thing that matters at *all* on the face of this planet any more and yet they live comfortably in every home as further proof of humanity's childlike inability to face its social responsibility.
When people read stories of all the awful things Apple are doing in the world, they take comfort in its expanding global dominion instead of guilt, because the more people doing it means the less blame can be placed on them personally, meaning the faster they can get back to enjoying their pretty new phone which just makes their life complete.
Apple represent corruption and they represent greed, globalisation gone sour and rotten under a shiny, polished, aluminium glass surface.
When Apple sales decline I'll know something right is happening in the world.
3 Like Funny how people hate so much on a quality product that actually works as advertised. We don't buy every new thing they come out with but what we have purchased works every single time we turn it on and does exactly what we need it to do. Between the 4 of us we have 3 iphones, 2ipods, and an iPad. Not a single issue with any of it. The support is excellent, the apple store works great, and I've easily found apps for everything I want to do. And to those saying these products aren't gaming devices, well, you aren't really gamers if you can't see that they are. My family plays games on them all the time and so do millions of others. Hate on Apple all you like but when a company makes a solid product that does what consumers want it to, meaning easy to operate, dependable, and well made, then that product is going to sell. I love my Apple devices and will continue to support Apple as long as they keep making solid products. The hate towards them is something I'll just never understand.
The thing I like about Apple, is that their customer service is way superior to everyone else. I only have an iPhone, but its lasted be several years without issues, so I really cannot complain.
So, Apple sold a bunch of inanimate objects that are not particularly special, or for that matter, different than inanimate objects from past years... Yay.
So, what is Apple doing with all of its money? Doing R&D on ways to extract money from the wallets of fools? Or are they going to make something new, and totally not the same product but with different dimensions?
Whatever the future holds, we can be sure that Apple will be laughing all the way to the bank.

1 Like People like Apple because of how they look on the outside neglecting the hardware that is inside the device.. I do have to admit though their customer service is hands down the best I have delt with, it blew Dell's support out of the water when Dell was "all the rage". (personal experience) Although CNN did report that Apple reported a loss this year, that they did not sell as many devices as they did the year before (2011). Apparently Android devices sold more in 2012 than Apple sold iPhones. It will be interesting to see how the new Windows phones sell this year (2013).
I bought one iPod and that's all. I don't understand how people keep buying the newest thing. I guess it's like a fashion statement. Enough people must care because there's not a huge difference besides different aesthetics and a new number.
